A mix of different grades of scrap is loaded into baskets which are transferred to the electric furnace. ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE The electric arc created between the electrodes heats the scrap to a molten state at a temperature of approximately 1650°C. The liquid steel is tapped into a ladle. LADLE FURNACE The ladle is charged into the furnace in order to achieve grade specification by adding ferroalloys. The steel is then routed to CONTINUOUS CASTING. CONTINUOUS CASTING The ladle moves to a rotating turret above a tundish. The steel is poured into molds that shape the product into a square cross-section. This product is called a BILLET. During this phase a water sprinkler cools the product. CONTINUOUS CASTING BILLETS The billets are cut using oxyfuel cutters. The pieces are then stored in the BILLET STORAGE YARD or transferred directly to the mill.
