SIDERURGICA SEVILLANA S.A. (SISE) is a steelmaking company which operates in the
electric steelmaking sector, known also as the “scrap route” in contrast to the integral
steelmaking process: in essence by this process prime ferrous scrap obtained from
recycling is made into semi-products intended to be used in other major industry fields.
SISE is mainly focused on steel melting and hot rolling as it has been doing since the mid
60’s as a company of the international Group RIVA, an outright leader in the steel sector.
The production process starts off with
separating, classifying and finally melting
scrap, before undergoing the final refining
processes during which the continuous
cast semi products – known as billets - are
obtained in a wide range of commercial
steel qualities. Each step in manufacturing
is carried out in compliance with the
safety and environmental regulations and
standards in force.
The company “Siderúrgica Sevillana, S.A.” (SISE) was founded in 1965 by a group of
Spanish, Italian and German industrialists who availed of state benefits accorded for the
construction of new industrial estates and pulled together the breakthrough project of a
“mini-mill” which would fulfil the local demand for reinforcing bars and light profiles. In
this manner, the local output of scrap could be recycled into construction products rather
than having to be sold to the various steel companies located in the north of Spain.
In the end the facilities were installed in
the heart of a region that at the time was
thoroughly agricultural and considered
industrially very primitive. The chosen
“scenario” was Alcalá de Guadaira, located
about 10 kilometres distant from the centre
of Sevilla, 15 kms from the inland river
port and in the vicinity of the motorway to
Malaga. The plant was erected on an estate
that once was a typical Andalusian oil-mill
farm dedicated to growing olive trees.
The main farm house and its surrounding
gardens have been preserved in their original
condition and they still testify to the
agricultural past of the region.
When back in 1968 the factory became operational it was considered “a cathedral in
the desert” though, as time went by, more and more companies decided to establish

themselves in the area, transforming that “desert” in what is known today as the
“Hacienda Dolores” industrial estate.
The plant counts upon the most modern range of equipment to produces deformed
reinforcing bars undergoing the toughest quality controls, including the German
homologation which had been obtained back in 1971. By the beginning of the 1970’s as
a result of a series of negative events the owners resolved to entrust the management
of SISE to the Riva Group which to begin started with a modest stake but ended up
overtaking the entire company.
Along with the new company policy, came the
increase in export sales as SISE would benefit from
the export subsidies for steel products accorded
by the Spanish government. It was then that the
company obtained also the product homologations
required by most EU and non EU countries. In 1975
the product range of Siderúrgica Sevillana was further
expanded to include merchant bars such as angles,
flats and squares.
When in 1986 Spain joined the European Economic
Community, State subsidies as well as all other export
protection measures disappeared and SISE became
then exposed to a more aggressive competition and in
need of substantial restructuring process (1987).
Such needs where met by installing an additional rolling line that complemented and
completed the range of products available.
The process of consolidation of the Spanish market has been mainly achieved through
customer’s satisfaction and the company still continues to invest in modernizing
procedures, including the continuous training of personnel aiming at enhancing their
professional skills as a qualified workforce.
Among the targets continuously pursued by SISE, the most important are the chief
concern for health and safety in the workplace, the protection of the environment and,
last but not least by any means, the strengthening of the quality control system.
