Press Release 28 August 2014 Opening of the exhibition “Jean Dypréau, art critic and art writer”. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium present, from 2 September 2014 to 25 January 2015, the exhibition « Jean Dypréau, art critic and art writer ». Dypréau (Brussels, 1917-1986), a committed writer and art critic, was a specialist of informal art, abstract art and pop art. The exhibition highlights the creations of contemporary artists such as Fontana, Broodthaers, Vasarely, Dubuffet, Delahaut and Ernst as well as the ‘Shared Paintings’ by Dypréau and his artist friends. A plural exhibition On the occasion of the publication of Jean Dypréau’s collected writings (Le point de vision, Marot, 2013), the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (RMFAB) dedicate this exhibition to a man with many talents. In the exhibition, excerpts from his critical writings on art accompany a selection of works by contemporary artists such as Fontana, Broodthaers, Oldenburg, Vasarely, Dubuffet, Delahaut, Ernst, Leblanc, d’Haese, Mortier, Bertrand, de Keyser, Léger, Permeke, Roulin, Ubac, Lam, Pistoletto, Segal, Villégié, or Gentils. Many of the artists he portrayed in his articles were close to his heart. Beside artworks from the Modern Art collection from the RMFAB, visitors can also rediscover a selection of about ten paintings, which were also on display in the 1 exhibition ‘Peinture Partagée, Dypréau – Van Anderlecht – Vandercam’ in the Galerie Aujourd’hui, Palais des Beaux-Arts (Brussels, 24.10 – 07.11.1959). The exhibition offers an ideal opportunity to revisit the burgeoning world of pop art, new realism, narrative figuration, geometric and lyric abstraction, expressionism, etc. ; all artistic movements Dypréau was passionate about. The book tracks Jean Dypréau’s journey in the art world of his time, pushing with him the doors of galleries and museums, sharing his discoveries, his surprises, and his passions. Dypréau, « art writer » Dypréau was a great art lover and the artists’ friend with whom he shared the poetic and artistic delirium, both abroad and in Belgium. Many Belgian artists of his generation owe their introduction in the artistic scene to him and subsequently their recognition in the most fashionable places. Jean Dyréau was a real ‘actor’ in the world of fine arts, at times standing next to artists as Van Anderlecht or Vandercam to paint with large gestures a slogan in the works of his friends. About 10 of these ‘shared paintings’, which were also shown in the 1959 exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, are visible today again.
