With over 60 working groups and 80 world class experts in
the most advanced digital technologies, we can surely help
your company embrace new business opportunities
HOW WE CAN HELP
W3C France Office - GFII - 6 Décembre 2013
10
Focus on some hot W3C topics
 Linked data and semantic Web
 Digital Publishing
 Open data; e-gov
 HTML5 as an integration platform
 Web & TV
 Web Payment
 Web of Things
W3C France Office - GFII - 6 Décembre 2013
11
WHAT WE DO
W3C Data Activity (1/2)
DATA ON THE WEB :
to develop the open data ecosystem, facilitating better communication
between developers and publishers;
to provide guidance to publishers that will improve consistency in the way
data is managed, thus promoting the re-use of data;
to foster trust in the data among developers, whatever technology they
choose to use, increasing the potential for genuine innovation.
The guidance will take two forms: a set of best practices that apply to
multiple technologies, and vocabularies currently missing but that are
needed to support the data ecosystem on the Web.
W3C France Office - GFII - 6 Décembre 2013
12
WHAT WE DO
W3C Data Activity (2/2)
CSV ON THE WEB :
Provide technologies whereby data dependent applications
on the Web can provide higher interoperability when working
with datasets using the CSV format :
mechanisms for interpreting a set of CSVs as relational data
(definition of a vocabulary for describing tables expressed as CSV, and
the relationships between them)
Objective: CSVs as 5 star data - a format that allows data to be linked
to other sources - using the Web as an intelligent data platform rather
than as a simple distribution system for files containing inaccessible
data
W3C France Office - GFII - 6 Décembre 2013
13
HOW WE CAN HELP
Focus on semantic web
Provides a common framework to share
Linked Data across applications,
enterprises, and communities
Participation from a large number of
researchers and industrial partners
Semantic
Web
Based on the Resource Description
Framework RDF, OWL, SPARQL
Several active groups (RDF, SPARQL, Linked
Data Platform…) involving worldwide
leaders (Google, Baidu, Yandex…)

HOW WE CAN HELP
Web payment – the existing
Ease of phishing are a threat to card
payment
"Improved" security for card payments:
3DSecure :
Branded as Verified by VISA and MasterCard
SecureCode
User authentication and confirmation
of payment in HTML IFRAME
"Verified by Visa and MasterCard
SecureCode: or, How Not to Design
Authentication", Steven J. Murdoch
and Ross Anderson, Financial Security
and Cryptography, January 2010
W3C France Office - GFII - 6 Décembre 2013
Users still have to enter card details and a
password, facilitating phishing
Shifting liability onto the card holder through
legal loophole!
26
HOW WE CAN HELP
Web payment – second factor approaches
Using the customer's phone as a separate communications
channel
Using a proprietary device, e.g. Chip Authentication Program
(CAP)
Handheld device issued by bank with display, keypad and card slot
User inserts card for one of several authentication protocols
Finger swipe or PIN entry in conjunction with Secure Element
Secure element with compute and storage resources, e.g. SIM or
microSD
Secure element generates proof of user's presence following local
authentication of user
Mastercard chip
authentification
Program (CPA)
 Need to separate identity and
authentication - lack of global standards
W3C France Office - GFII - 6 Décembre 2013
27
HOW WE CAN HELP
Web payment – increasing variety of solutions
PayPal, Stripe, allpay, Tenpay, Square,
Verifone SAIL, Flint, V.me, Paypass, Weve,
Isis, MasterPass, Google Wallet, LevelUp,
GSMA OneAPI, Mozilla mozpay API,
Facebook Payments, MintChip, Bitcoin,
Paymium Paytunia, Amazon Coins, CentUp,
Flattr, PaySwarm, WebCredits, IFEX, Ripple,
...
More info on these
 The huge variety causes pain
for users and developers alike!
W3C France Office - GFII - 6 Décembre 2013
28
HOW WE CAN HELP
W3C and web payment : emerging themes
Focus on improving usability and security
Digital wallets that hold multiple payment solutions as well
as loyalty coupons etc.
Mix of device embedded and cloud based
technologies
Access to the user’s wallet from any personal device
Reducing the effort expected from web developers whilst
giving users control over how they pay
W3C France Office - GFII - 6 Décembre 2013
29
HOW WE CAN HELP
W3C and web payment : relevant work
This is just a few of the relevant examples :
W3C System Applications Working Group
Trusted system apps as alternative to native apps
API for access to Secure Elements
API for access to Bluetooth
W3C NFC Working Group
W3C Web Crypto Working Group
Interest in location based value-added services
Outdoors, and soon indoors ...
Bluetooth Low Energy: PayPal Beacon, Apple iBeacon
W3C France Office - GFII - 6 Décembre 2013
30
HOW WE CAN HELP
W3C and web payment : workshop positioning
Workshop to take place in Paris, March 2014
Is it timely to initiate work on Web payment APIs?
Start with simple payment request API
Browser hands over request to wallet for user to choose how to pay
Users may be asked to authenticate themselves and confirm payment
Selected payment provider generates proof of payment for merchant
Wallet and payment providers as examples of trusted system apps
Later expand scope to offline and person to person payments
Ensuring a level playing field for payment providers, existing
and new, large and small!
Need to be able to install new payment providers after device
has shipped
