Les Nouvelles de décembre – La Classe de Mme Griffiths
Les Nouvelles de décembre – La Classe de Mme Griffiths “Le monde à notre portée, The world awaits us.” ____________________________________________________________________________ Classroom Highlights Theme: This month we will continue to explore forest animals (les animaux de la forêt), as well as discuss some seasonal changes and characteristics. SCHOLASTIC – Book orders are due December 6th in order to ensure that they are delivered before the holidays. If your order is a gift, please write a note with your order, and I will keep it in my room until you are able to pick it up. Merci! SickKids Foundation – This year our school is grouped into „Colour House teams‟ who will work together to celebrate and raise awareness of important issues and values in the community through a variety of school-based events. Our team colour is yellow/jaune and our team name is “Sunnyside Up et Les Cocos Jaunes”. Our first project of the year is to raise money and give support to the SickKids Foundation. During the month of December we will be holding a raffle where tickets may be purchased for a random draw for various prizes. Prizes will be made available for viewing the first full week of December, so feel free to come by, purchase some tickets and drop them in the ballot box for the prize(s) you hope to win! In addition to the draw, we are also collecting change for points in each classroom (each cent is worth one point, so 5 cents is 5 points, 5 dollars is 500 points). Our intermediate students are working on a webpage that will be available shortly for donations that go directly to the SickKids Foundation. Classroom teachers are gratefully suggesting that donations to this important organization be made in lieu of teacher gifts this holiday season. Merci beaucoup! Winter Concert – From 6:30-7:30pm on Mon., December 12th, and Tues., December 13th, our school will be presenting our K-8 Winter Concerts. The M/W class will present on Monday, and the T/Th class will present on Tuesday. The Kindergarten classes will be performing near the beginning of the concert. We look forward to seeing you there! Colder weather – It seems the temperature has suddenly dropped and winter is approaching! As students begin to bring more pieces of outdoor clothing to school it is important to remember to label all of your child‟s clothing that they will be taking off and putting back on several times a day. There is often more than one child with the same piece(s) of outdoor clothing, and we want to ensure that your child‟s items are accounted for. We also suggest packing extra mittens and socks in your child‟s backpack. Merci! Parent At-Home Connection Here is a list of thematic vocabulary we are currently learning: forêt ours orignal lapin hibou souris écureuil renard loup oiseau grand moyen petit voici cerf arbre Reading and Writing: All children should continue to practice identifying (in French) capital and lower case letters presented to them in random order. Reinforcement of letter recognition and sound generation at home makes a big difference! SK students can also continue to recognize consonant + vowel syllables (e.g., students are shown sa, se, si, so, su, and are asked to find „sa‟ – this may be repeated with any consonant + vowel combination). Oral Language: Encourage your child to „teach‟ you new words/phrases that they have learned in French at school so that you may practice using them together at home. Some key phrases your child should be able to say “Voici __________.” [Here is/here are ________.] “Est-ce que je peux _________?” [Can I ________?] “Puis-je aller aux toilettes?” [Can I go to the washroom?] “Puis-je aller à la fontaine?” [Can I go to the water fountain?] “Peux-tu m’aider?” [Can you help me?] “Ça va _________.” [It‟s going ________.] (Tribles) “J’aime ________.” [I like _________.] “Il fait froid.” [It is cold.] “Il neige.” [It is snowing.] “J’ai fini.” [I have finished (my work).] “S’il vous plaît.” [Please.] “Merci.” [Thank you.] Math: Students can practice identifying individual numbers presented to them in random order (between 1-10 for JKs and between 1-15 for SKs). En français s’il vous plaît! Helpful tips… * Notice print when you are out with your child. Pointing out letters and numbers to children in our world helps them realize that print carries meaning. * Ask your child to identify the sound of a letter and generate words that start with that sound. ____________________________________________________________________________ Merci beaucoup for all of your support and encouragement. We are looking forward to a delightful décembre! Mme Sarah Griffiths 519-824-0028, ext. 431
