On Wearing Several Hats/Porter plusieurs chapeaux

Recently, I have been involved with various projects
concerning issues that affect our profession, and in the
process I have been asked on several occasions to "put
on", "take off" and then "put on again" an incredible
collection of "hats".
Recemment j'ai eu I'occasion de participer activement a un certain nombre de projets qui ant trait a notre
profession et ce faisant il m'a ete demande de mettre,
d'enlever et de remettre une collection incroyable de
"chapeaux".
I must wear my "department director's hat" when
addressing internal administrative issues or functions.
My "clinician's hat" is best suited when dealing with my
patients. My "member of Provincial Association Committee hat" I wear when dealing with provinciallegislation matters affecting hearing aid dispensing. My "university clinical instructor's hat" comes on when I'm
dealing with the supervisors of students at my clinic. My
"public advocate hat" I display when asking for support
from local benevolent associations or when approaching
the department of consumer affairs with complaints on
behalf of the public. The most recent confusing moment
came when I was invited to serve on an advisory committee of our Provincial Department of Health to evaluate the professional situation in our field in our province
and to provide recommendations for future development. I was asked to interchange or wear at the same
time four types of "hats" at various moments during the
discussions, which are still ongoing.
Je dais porter mon "chapeau de chef de service" en
adressant des affaires administratives internes. Je mets
man "chapeau de clinicien" quand je m'adresse a mes
patients. Quand il s'agit de debattre des affaires legislatives au sujet de la vente des protheses auditives je parte
mon "chapeau de membre de I'association provinciale".
En tant que superviseur d'etudiants je dois mettre mon
"chapeau d'instructeur". Je mets en valeur mon "chapeau de defenseur du public" quand je m'adresse a des
associations bene voles ou quand je plaide la cause d'un
consomateur aupres du gouvernemen1. Les chases
devinrent vraiment tres confuses recemment lorsqu'on
m'a demande de faire partie d'une commission d'enquete provinciale pour evaluer les services offerts et
recommender un plan d'action pour le futuro Dans les
discussions du comite on me demanda a maintes
reprises de changer jusqu'a quatre fois de "chapeau" et
meme a un certain moment de porter les quatres a la fois.
I saw the light when the chairman suggested that I
wear mostly my "CASLPAjACOA hat" because after all
... , I am the "president of the outfit" ... and my "input
would be most valuable in that capacity". Of course
certification is coming on stream in 1987, CASP and
WMS are well on their way as well ... It was suggested
that I should wear this "hat" to ensure that the committee's deliberations would keep in mind the standards,
rules and regulations set by the "professionals" of this
country.
"Professionals!" he said. EUREKA! Here is the solution. I am positively tired of wearing this collection of
"hats" ... At the eve of this New Year, I have made the
resolution to wear and keep on one single "hat". My best
one, the one that will fit every occasion ... , the one which
I am proud to wear, my one and only "professional hatl"
This "hat" can easily replace all of the above mentioned
"hats" because it represents everything that our professional group stands for. It can be worn proudly and
freely from St. John's to Victoria and does not have to
overcome linguistic or geographical barriers.
You have a similar "hat"! Wear it proudly.
Tout devint clair quand le president du comite a
suggere que pour le reste des deliberations je ne porte
que man "chapeau de I'ACOAjCASLPA" car...apres
tout. .. je suis le "president de cette organisation" et que
en cette capacite man conseil aurait une tres gran de
valeur. Tout cela, bien sur, parce que la reconnaissance
professionnelle, I'agrement des programmes et le
systeme de mesure du travail verront plein jour en 1987.
Man role en portant ce "chapeau" devenait tres simple,
celui d'assurer que toutes les deliberations du comite
soient en plein accord avec toutes les normes, reglements et Iignes de conduites etablis et acceptes par tous
les "professionnels" pratiquant a travers le pays.
"Professionnels" dit-i1? EURt:KA! Voila ma solution! Je suis vraiment fatigue de porter cette collection
de "chapeaux". A la veille de cette nouvelle annee je pris
donc la resolution de ne garder et ne porter plus qu'un
seul "chapeau", man meilleur, celui qui m'ira bien
quelque soit I'occasion, celui que je suis fier de porter,
man seul "chapeau de professionnel". Ce "chapeau"
peut facilement rem placer taus les autres parce qu'il
represente tout ce dont notre groupe professionnel professe. 11 peut se porter fierement et sans entraves de S1.
John's a Victoria sans avoir a franchir de barrieres ou
d'enclaves linquistiques ou geographiques.
Vous avez un "chapeau" semblable! Portez le donc
fierement.
