Abstract
Since the beginning of the 21st Century, under the impulse and orientation of the
President of the Republic, Head of the Cameroonian Diplomacy, Cameroon has broadened the
circle of its partners throughout the world by establishing new diplomatic relations and
strengthening Its presence through the creation or re-opening of several diplomatic and
consular missions as well as been member to new international organisations. This diplomacy
has thus become mature and drawn great partners within fora of major international
negotiations; all this thanks to the actions of its overseas diplomatic missions and personnel.
Today the advent of globalization has not only brought in new actors it has also introduced
new issues in interstate relations which have great implications on the structure and conduct
of the modern diplomacy by Cameroon Overseas Diplomatic Missions.
This paper is committed to a historical exploration of the structure, functions, and
challenges of Cameroon’s overseas missions in the 21st century. To this end, it employed the
eclectic method of investigation, implementing a combination of historical and descriptive
methods of data collection. The work relies heavily on primary and secondary data sourced
from journal articles, textbooks, newspapers and magazines and other relevant materials
including government gazettes. In order to enhance objectivity of this work, qualitative
methods were used to critically analyze and confirm facts and information obtained. The
paper thus observes that Cameroon overseas missions fall into two broad categories,
specifically, the diplomatic and consular missions and are of varying sizes. As important as
they can be and with the advent of globalization these missions have vigorously pursued the
country’s national interest over the years with mixed results of success and failures, amidst
daunting challenges.

Résumé
Depuis le début du XXIe siècle, sous l'impulsion et l'orientation du Président de la
République, Chef de la diplomatie camerounaise, le Cameroun a élargi le cercle de ses
partenaires à travers le monde en établissant de nouvelles relations diplomatiques et en
renforçant sa présence par la création ou la réouverture de plusieurs missions diplomatiques et
consulaires ainsi que la participation à de nouvelles organisations internationales. Cette
diplomatie est ainsi devenue mature et a attiré de grands partenaires au sein des foras des
grandes négociations internationales. Tout cela grâce aux actions de ses missions
diplomatiques et de son personnel à l'étranger. Aujourd'hui, l'avènement de la mondialisation
a non seulement introduit de nouveaux acteurs, mais cela a également introduit de nouvelles
questions dans les relations inter-étatiques qui ont de grandes implications sur la structure et
la conduite de la diplomatie moderne par les missions diplomatiques du Cameroun à
l'étranger.
Le present papier s'engage à une exploration historique de la structure, des fonctions et
des défis des missions diplomtiques du Cameroun au XXIe siècle. À cette fin, il a employé la
méthode d'investigation éclectique, mettant en œuvre une combinaison de méthodes
historiques et descriptives de collecte de données. Le travail repose essentiellement sur des
données primaires et secondaires provenant d'articles de revues, de manuels scolaires, de
journaux et de magazines et d'autres documents pertinents, y compris des bulletins
gouvernementaux. Afin d'améliorer l'objectivité de ce travail, des méthodes qualitatives ont
été utilisées pour analyser et confirmer de façon critique les faits et les informations obtenus.
Le papier constate ainsi que les missions à l'étranger du Cameroun se divisent en deux
grandes catégories, en particulier les missions diplomatiques et consulaires et sont de tailles
différentes. Aussi importantes qu'elles puissent être et avec l'avènement de la mondialisation,
ces missions ont vigoureusement poursuivi l'intérêt national du pays au fil des ans avec des
résultats mitigés de succès et d'échecs, au milieu des different défis.
