SPELLING CHANGES In French, we sometimes have to make changes in the spelling of different forms of the same verb, so that the basic sound of the verb remains unchanged. For example : The present tense of regular verbs ending in '-er' is formed by removing the '-er' and adding the endings : '-e' [for the je person], '-es' [for the tu person], '-e' [for the il-elle person], '-ons' [for the nous person], '-ez' [for the vous person], '-ent' [for the ils-elles person]. However, if we add '-ons' for the 'nous' person of manger (to eat), pronounced 'mahng-zhay' we will have 'mangons', pronounced 'mahng-gong', i.e. a change in the basic sound. So, in order to keep the soft sound 'zh', we must add an 'e' and write 'nous mangeons'. This spelling change takes place whenever the 'g' is followed by 'a' or 'o': nous mangeons we eat (present tense) je mangeais I was eating (imperfect tense) il mangea he ate (past historic) en mangeant while eating (present participle) Here are some important verbs that behave like 'manger' : arranger=to arrange, nager=to swim, corriger=to correct, voyager=to travel. décourager=to discourage, encourager=to encourage, déranger=to disturb. Everything that has been said about keeping the 'g' soft also applies to the soft 'c' in a verb like 'annoncer' (to announce). In order to keep the 'c' soft in the 'nous' person, a cedilla must be added to the 'c' and we write 'nous annonçons'. The pronunciation would be 'ah-nong-kong' without the cedilla. So, 'ç' (cedilla added to 'c') is written before 'a' and 'o' when the soft-sounding 'c' is to be retained : nous annonçons we announce (present tense) j'annonçais I was announcing (imperfect tense) il annonça he announced (past historic) en annonçant while announcing (present participle) Here are some important verbs that behave like 'annoncer' : commencer=to begin, divorcer=to divorce, prononcer=to pronounce, remplacer=to replace. Some verbs whose infinitive ends in '-eler' and '-eter' double the 'l' and 't' before a silent 'e' : appeler=to call : PRESENT TENSE: j'appelle nous appelons tu appelles vous appelez il-elle appelle ils-elles appellent FUTURE TENSE: j'appellerai tu appelleras il-elle appellera CONDITIONAL TENSE: j'appellerais tu appellerais il-elle appellera it nous appellerons vous appellerez ils-elles appelleront nous appellerions vous appelleriez ils-elles appelleraient Here are some important verbs that behave like 'appeler' : rappeler=to call back, to remind; renouveler=to renew; Some verbs change '-e' to '-è' before a silent 'e' : acheter=to buy: PRESENT TENSE: j'achète tu achètes il-elle achète FUTURE TENSE: j'achèterai tu achèteras il-elle achètera CONDITIONAL TENSE: j'achèterais tu achèterais il-elle achèterait jeter=to throw. nous achetons vous achetez ils-elles achètent nous achèterons vous achèterez ils-elles achèteront nous achèterions vous achèteriez ils-elles achèteraient Here are some verbs that behave like 'acheter' : modeler=to model; racheter=to buy back; crocheter=to pick the lock on/trip up/crochet; lever=to raise; se lever=to get up; mener=to lead; amener=to bring; celer=to conceal; geler=to freeze; peler=to peel; fureter=to ferret/rummage about.
