LITERATURE LUNCHES AT THE EESC 2012
CRIME STORIES
InBETWEEN the annual literary readings at the European
Economic and Social Committee (EESC), are back. This year we
have prepared something exciting for you – a real European thrill!
The theme for 2012 focuses on crime and detective stories.
This literary genre has a long international tradition and world
famous authors have created world famous characters like
Sherlock Holmes – both prototype and synonym for a detective.
Think of Agatha Christie, Alfred Hitchcock, Henning Mankell,
Donna Leon, just to name a few. You will find many well-known
names, be it in literature, film, music or other cultural fields, that
have shaped this genre and contributed to its great success.
It is an implicit characteristic of crime stories that they are based
on suspense and surprise. This genre plays with the darker side of
human nature, thus evoking a thrilling atmosphere. It is interesting
to see that crime stories are becoming ever more popular and
that they can be found in all types of media. On the one hand,
this success may come down to the fact that crime stories often
deal with the unimaginable criminal mind in all its gruesome
characteristics and the eternal battle between good and evil.

On the other hand, today we encounter a new generation of
authors who portray detectives as personalities fighting against
horrible crimes at the places where they live and work. They present
a new generation of detectives whose investigations do not only
aim to find the murderer, but also give a complex insight into their
surrounding world, which often includes a trip into their inner-self.
This approach has opened up more complex portrayals of people
and the world they live in. The plot still focuses on crime and the
goal of solving a murder mystery, but the audience gains more
insight into the process, and they are more involved in societal
processes throughout the story.

The EESC sees this year’s series of readings as a substantial
contribution enhancing our understanding of European citizens –
brought to you in an entertaining manner. We invite you to join
us in experiencing the European landscape as it is portrayed by
authors from Austria, Denmark, England and Ireland. They will
present their exciting stories taking place in the different corners
of Europe in their mother tongue, proving that Europe extends
beyond the major European languages. If you don’t understand
the language of the author, don’t worry, you can still follow the
text with the translations that will be provided.

Eva Rossmann, born 1962 in Graz, now
lives in the wine region in Lower Austria.
She graduated in constitutional law,
worked as a political journalist and has
been a freelance writer since 1994. Since
releasing her crime thriller Ausgekocht
she has also worked as a chef in Buchinger’s restaurant ‘Zur Alten Schule’. She
writes scripts and hosts the ORF-TV talk
show ‘Club 2’. She has published several
non-fiction works on women’s equality.
All thirteen of her crime thrillers featuring
the Viennese investigative journalist Mira
Valensky deal with the pursuit of outer
beauty and what lurks behind it. Her novel Russen kommen (Russians are coming)
was voted Austria’s favourite book in 2009.
Eva Rossmann, 1962 in Graz geboren,

als Verfassungsjuristin, arbeitete als
politische Journalistin und ist seit 1994
freie Autorin. Seit ihrem Krimi Ausgekocht

find her mobile phone, but other than that she has completely vanished. The traces
are few and confusing and point towards different offenders. The situation sharpens
further when another girl disappears. Will she be the last?

Copenhagen with her husband and her
two children aged 10 and 8.

Rupture unveils the story of teacher Samuel Szajkowski who unexpectedly walks into his school
assembly and opens fire. He kills three pupils and a colleague before turning the gun on himself. Lucia
May, the young policewoman who is assigned the case, is expected to wrap up things quickly and
without fuss. Soon Lucia becomes preoccupied with the question no one else seems to want to ask: what
drove a mild-mannered, diffident school teacher to commit such a despicable crime?
The Child Who plays in a quiet English town where twelve-year-old Daniel Blake is discovered to
have brutally murdered his schoolmate Felicity Forbes. For provincial solicitor Leo Curtice, the case
promises to be the most high profile – and morally challenging – of his career. But as he begins his
defence Leo is unprepared for the impact the public fury surrounding Felicity’s death will have on his
family – and his teenage daughter Ellie, above all.

Simon Lelic has worked as a journalist
and currently runs his own business. He
was born in Brighton, England in 1976
and lives there now with his wife and
three young children. His first two novels,
Rupture and The Facility, were huge critical successes. Rupture won a Betty Trask
Award, was shortlisted for the CWA John
Creasey New Blood Dagger and the Macavity Best First Mystery Novel Award, as
well as being longlisted for the Desmond
Elliot Prize and the Theakstons Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year Award. Simon
was shortlisted in the New Writer of the
Year category at the Galaxy British Book
Awards. The Child Who was published in
January 2012, and is Simon’s third novel.
Simon Lelic a travaillé comme journaliste et possède aujourd’hui sa propre
entreprise. Né en 1976 à Brighton, en
Angleterre, il y vit à présent avec son
épouse et leurs trois jeunes enfants. Ses

member of Aosdána, and Writer Fellow
at Trinity College Dublin.
