Harmony’s new spin

A new junior spin bike has been added to the
daily routine of groups, allowing students to

MILK MONDAYS Each Monday
students are given a serving of milk. Milk is a great
source of calcium, which is essential for healthy
bones and teeth. Milk also contains protein, which
helps to rebuild muscles after exercise.
WALKING WEDNESDAYS
Did you know that October is the International
Walk to School Month? Although a little tough
for many of our students to walk to school due to
distance and safety, O.E.S has set aside 15 minutes
at the end of every Wednesday where students
walk a .7km route with their teachers. According to
our students, walking helps them be more active,
helps them wake up, gets them out in the fresh air,
causes less car pollution and best of all....they get to
socialize with their friends!
FRUITY FRIDAYS On Fridays,
each class receives a fresh platter containing a
variety of fresh fruits. Fruits are an excellent
source of vitamin C & A, which help in the
prevention of diseases. By providing the students
with a variety of fruits, we hope to introduce
them to a new fruit that they enjoy eating, These
initiatives are supported by a $5,500 grant received
through the Breakfast for Learning Program. These
funds support initiatives targeting the nutritional
needs of students. For more information on this
grant, please visit www.breakfastforlearning.ca .

What recipes will you
pass on to your child?
Preserve those recipes and
make a “family tree” using
recipes that have been passed
down from generation to
generation.
Heatlhy Habits Begin at Home
Although not always easy, it’s important to sit down as a family at dinner time.
Not only does this allow for conversation between parents and children, but it
also helps to create healthy eating habits! Plan menus together, or assign ageappropriate cooking jobs to your kids. Jamie Oliver, reknowned chef and healthy
eating advocate, identifies the importance of children learning about food and
developing cooking skills that they will use later in life.

NFSB’s Healthy Kid of the Month
M
y healthy, active lifestyle begins at home. We cook and eat homemade meals
and stay active during the summer biking and nature walking on Ile Saint
Bernard. We also run in the COLOR ME RUN. It’s an awesome experience that
everyone should try! In the winter we do a lot of downhill skiing, tubing and
tobogganing. I am one of three students who organize the Irish Dance program. We
start dancing in October and put on a school wide show for St. Patrick’s Day.
This month’s challenge
Take a photo of your family’s cooking fun, or an old family recipe,
and send it, along with a description, to [email protected]
Spend time being active with your child. You
will create a lifetime of memories together
and who knows, you may get in shape along
the way -- and feel like a kid again yourself!
