Dans la ville de Cupang, pendant une éclipse totale de soleil, quand les
gens croient que la fin du monde arrive, la jeune Elsa affirme qu'elle a
eu une apparition de la Vierge Marie sur le sommet de la colline, là
même où, quand elle était enfant, elle avait été trouvée puis adoptée par
Aling Saling.
Les villageois sont d'abord incrédules, jusqu'à ce qu'ils voient Elsa guérir des malades. Riches et pauvres, pèlerins et touristes affluent de
toutes parts dans ce village reculé. Certains en profitent pour s'enrichir
en louant leur maison, nourrissant les visiteurs, vendant des objets religieux et de l'eau bénie par Elsa. Orly, réalisateur, vient tourner un documentaire sur Elsa et son amie d'enfance, Nimia, désormais prostituée, et ouvre un cabaret.
Un jour, alors qu'elles prient au sommet de la colline, Elsa et sa disciple Chayong sont attaquées et violées par des drogués.
Himala a été le premier film philippin en sélection officielle au festival
de Berlin en 1983. La grande actrice Nora Aunor incarne la jeune Elsa.
In the city of Cupang, during a total solar eclipse which make people
believe the end of the world is about to happen, young Elsa claims she
saw an apparition of Virgin Mary on top of the hill where she had
been found as a child, and later adopted by Aling Saling.
The villagers are first incredulous until they see Elsa curing ill people.
Coming from everywhere, the rich and the poor, pilgrims and tourists
flock to this remote village. Some people make profits by renting their
houses, feeding the visitors and selling religious items or water blessed by Elsa. Director Orly comes to make a film about Elsa and childhood friend Nimia, who is now a prostitute, opens a cabaret.
One day, Elsa and her disciple Chayong while praying on top of the
hill are aggressed and raped by drug addicts.
‘Himala’ was the first Filipino film to enter the official competition at
Berlin festival in 1983. Great actress Nora Aunor plays the part of
young Elsa.

Ishmael Bernal est né en
1938. Il est diplômé en littérature de l’Université des
Philippines et en littérature
française et en philosophie
de l’Université d’Aix-enProvence. Il a étudié le
cinéma à l’Institut du film
en Inde. Il tourne son premier film, At the Top, en
1971. Il réalise plus de cinquante films. Il meurt en
1996, reconnu Artiste national 5 ans plus tard.
