FREDERIC JOLIOT & OTTO HAHN
SUMMER SCHOOL ON NUCLEAR REACTORS
"PHYSICS, FUELS AND SYSTEMS"
The Frédéric Joliot & Otto Hahn Summer School was created by CEA in 1995 to promote knowledge in the field
of Reactor Physics, in a broad sense, and the international exchange of teachers, young scientists and
researchers. The School is presently organized by the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe and the Nuclear Energy
Division of CEA (CEA/DEN). Beginning in 2004, the scope of the School has been broadened to include scientific
issues related to nuclear fuels.
The School’s aim is to address the challenges of designing future reactors and optimal fuel cycles, and to
contribute to the understanding of related theories and experiments.
Lecturers are invited from internationally leading universities, research and development laboratories, and
industry. The lectures are primarily intended for young post-doctoral scientists and engineers engaged in the
broad field of nuclear sciences, engineering and technologies.
The School is co-sponsored by the Nuclear Development and Innovation Division of CEA/DEN, the
Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, and CEA-INSTN.

1. CEA Cadarache Research Center : Visit of the Site by bus
2. Magnetic Fusion : Tore Supra
With a major radius of 2.25 m and a minor radius of 0.70 m, Tore Supra is one of the largest
tokamak in the world. Its main feature is the superconducting toroidal magnets which enable
generation of a permanent toroidal magnetic field. Tore supra is also the only tokamak with
plasma facing components actively cooled. Theses two features allow the study of plasma
with long pulse duration.
3. Fuels research Facilities: LECA - STAR or LCU
LECA – STAR
LECA: Laboratoire d'Examen des Combustibles Actifs (active fuel test laboratory)
The objectives are destructive and non destructive testing of irradiated devices for programs
concerning: the monitoring and improvement of the fuel used in PWR, the safety reactors,
the transformation of actinides.
The examination methods are: gas analysis included in pins and rods, metallography and
ceramography, fuel physical properties,MEB, microprobe and SIMS analysis, X difractometer
STAR: Station de Traitement, d'Assainissement et de Reconditionnement
The objectives are fuel treatment and particularly the fuel from the Gas Cooled Reactor
stored at the CEA and the testing of pressurized water reactor fuel rods.
LCU
LCU: Laboratoire des Combustibles Uranium (Uranium Fuels Laboratory)
The objectives are elaboration of uranium based powder and fuels (sol-gel, powder
metallurgy) process analysis, nuclear ceramic characterizations, physical and chemical
characterizations of powder and manufacture of instrumented fuel rods for experimental
irradiation.

With a major radius of 2.25m (machine centre to plasma centre) and a minor radius
of 0,70m, Tore Supra is one of the largest tokamaks in the world. Its main feature is
the superconducting toroidal magnets which enable generation of a permanent
toroidal magnetic field. Tore Supra is also the only tokamak with actively cooled
plasma facing components. Theses two features allow the study of plasma with long
pulse duration.

Extracting power
The "plasma facing components" receive the heat from the plasma and act as thermal
shields and regulate the flow of exhaust gas. The first version of these components destined
to extract heat enabled the evacuation of around 3 MW in more or less stable regime on Tore
Supra. The experience acquired led to the design of a new generation of limiters capable of
withstanding fluxes of up to 10 MW/m2 (compared to 70 MW/m2 on the surface of the sun).
These very efficient new components (CIEL project for Internal Components and Limiter
‘Composants Internes Et Limiteur’) were developed by European industries and were
installed on Tore Supra in 2000.
This mainly involved :
•
a wide surface 7m2 "limiter" ring, made up of
576 horizontal components (fingers), capable of
extracting 15 megawatts of power transferred by
the plasma particles ,
•
a reinforced protection of the cryostat,
containing the superconducting magnet system,
from plasma radiation (capable of extracting 10
megawatts).
All these components have the possibility of evacuating
a total of 25 megawatts of injected power over period
up to 1000 seconds.
Power injection (heating)
In Tore Supra, several techniques of plasma heating by radiowaves are used. Improvements
on existing systems are being considered so as to initially raise the injection capacity to
12MW for 1000s (CIMES-1 project standing for "Components for Injection of Matter and
Stationary Energy").
The main results
Tore Supra has been in operation since 1988 and has since this time produced more than
20000 plasma discharges. Amongst the main breakthroughs achieved by Tore Supra are :
•
The practically uninterrupted operation since 1988 of the Tore Supra superconducting
magnet, which in itself is a great technological success and a considerable
breakthrough for the controlled fusion programme and other industries.
•
Mastery of long-duration plasmas (a record duration plasma of 6 minutes 30s
achieved - 04/12/2003 with 1.1GJ injected/extracted).
