CURRENT BOOK PROJECT
Exhortations in French and Occitan medieval crusade lyric songs
The research I am conducting is the study of exhortative discourse in French and Occitan
medieval crusade lyric songs (12th-13th centuries), including texts in support of as well as those
protesting against how such expeditions were conducted. This research project makes use of a corpus
of primary sources recently reedited. To write this second book (finished 2018 ca.), I am using an
interdisciplinary approach to study the crusade rhetoric in these lyric songs, drawing from my original
discipline of philology and literary criticism, as well as the ancillary disciplines of the history, theology
and study of the sermon.
