Popularity of Sunday roast dinner dropping
Le très célèbre déjeuner en famille du dimanche, plus connu sous le nom de Sunday Roast
Dinner, est mis à mal dans la société contemporaine qui évolue et consacre désormais
moins de temps au traditionnel repas si prisé des Britanniques.

Sky News Reporter, Joe Tidy: The traditional Sunday roast, a chance to get the family round for catch up
and a good feed in the comfort of your own home, or maybe not. New figures suggest that the traditional
home-cooked Sunday feast is on the decline, with carveries, takeaways and less time-consuming alternatives
on the rise.
A male customer: So we haven’t cooked a Sunday roast in years.
Sky News Reporter: Why is that?
A male customer: It’s only the two of us.
A female customer: It’s a new time of Sunday roast, I need all the morning preparing it, it has to all come
together at the right time, not an easy task. So if you can get a nice Sunday roast, just as a nice home-cooked
one, out to a nice pub, or to here.
Sky News Reporter: Some say the loss of the roast is another casualty of a slow change in the way we live
and eat.
Food historian, William Sitwell: Well, we are now in a drawing room from the late 1800s, about 1870. Now
you wouldn’t have had a roast meal in here but you could well have had tea or maybe breakfast, it could have
been a quick breakfast before the man of the house, the husband, would then have gone off to work, leaving
the women at home. By the time we get to the 1930s, the sort of nineteenth century dining room actually
disappears, when people start to eat in the room that they’re actually living in and existing in.
Over the decades, we get to the 1950s and what you find is that the table itself starts getting smaller and
smaller and smaller.
Until we get to the 1990s and look, there’s no dining table at all. All that we’re left with here is a breakfast bar,
so the situation is that as that table that has bonded people together, has created that space for communal
dining disappears, you haven’t got the mother and the father of the family coming together for that roast
meal. And without the space, you don’t have the roast, so we end up losing roast dinners.

¾¾ Deuxième visualisation du reportage en fractionné. Faire des pauses après chaque phrase pour que les
élèves aient le temps de compléter les activités. Le travail peut se faire de manière individuelle.
¾¾ Troisième visualisation du reportage en entier afin de permettre aux élèves de vérifier leurs réponses.
Correction en groupe classe.

tendance est due à des changements de rythme de vie et aussi à un style de vie plus fonctionnel. On nous
présente même l’évolution des foyers britanniques à travers le temps, avec une disparition notoire de
la table à manger et des chaises dans la salle à manger, qui n’a désormais plus de place dans la pièce à
