the lives of what some fear and what others have to endure
about a rare but spine-chilling inhuman behavior.

A poetic celebration of the role and place of the Calabash in African
societies. At the same time - using the calabash as a metaphor for
African film - it questions yesterday’s African cinema and critically

Synopsis A woman attaches hair piece, black women in hair
salons get their hair plaited; and a woman models on a yellow
turban. Eccentric hairstyles reveal the roots of Afro hair in
which activist, Angela Davis becomes involved. Manipulating
and re-positioning found footage as subject matter, “Split Ends,
I feel wonderful” observes the latest fad in hairstyles of the
1970s among African Americans in NYC. The film takes us to
a time when Black is beautiful and a symbol of African pride.

Synopsis
La vie amoureuse d’Asante est un désastre car il est croquemort et fait fuir toutes les jeunes filles. Jusqu’au jour où il
rencontre la belle Esi qui doit enterrer sa mère. Asante réussit
à gagner son coeur et les deux jeunes gens décident de se
marier. Mais tout d’abord, Asante doit convaincre Owusu, le
père d’Esi, de lui accorder la main de sa fille. Un fétichiste lui
affirme qu’Owusu donnera son accord s’il boit du schnapps
de la bouteille d’un mort. N’écoutant que son amour Asante
surmonte sa peur et dérobe ladite bouteille. Mais rien ne
se déroule comme il l’espère. Et la belle Esi affirme ne plus
vouloir le revoir. Pour toujours ?
Death and funeral traditions play a significant role in African
culture. ‘No Time to Die’ is Director King Ampaw’s contribution
to passing the tradition onto the next generation. A hearse driver
meets and falls in love with a young, beautiful dancer who is
planning an elaborate home-going celebration for her mother. This
love and comedy feature film follows David as he does everything
to win her affection.

Synopsis
Au Pas-de-Calais, des milliers de réfugiés attendent dans
l’espoir de monter en clandestins dans un camion à destination
de la Grande-Bretagne. C’est le cas de Bilal, un adolescent
kurde déterminé à rejoindre sa petite amie à Londres avant que
son père ne la marie à un autre. Ses économies dilapidées par
une tentative de traversée avortée, Bilal forme un projet fou:
franchir la Manche à la nage. À la piscine municipale, il demande
à Simon, maître nageur peu sociable, de lui donner des leçons
privées. D’abord sceptique, le quadragénaire solitaire accepte
d’aider le jeune sans-papier au risque de sanctions , dans l’espoir
d’impressionner son ex-épouse, une travailleuse humanitaire
très engagée dans la cause des clandestins.
In Pas-de-Calais, thousands of refugees line up to get into in a
truck illegally bound for Britain. This is the case of Bilal, a young
Kurdish man determined to join his girlfriend in London before her
father marries her to another man. His savings squandered by an
abortive attempt to get into the country, Bilal comes up with a crazy
plan: he’ll swim across the channel. At the municipal pool, he asks
Simon, a swimming instructor, to give him private lessons. Initially
sceptical, Simon agrees to help, despite the risk of helping an illegal
immigrant, because he wants to impress his ex-wife, a humanitarian
worker committed to the cause of illegal immigrants.

Passionné par l’histoire de son peuple, Alloune un vieux guide
du musée sénégalais «La Maison des esclaves» à Gorée, part
en pèlerinage pour retrouver les descendants de ses ancêtres
aux Etats-Unis. Cet émouvant voyage va le mener des côtes de
Caroline du Sud à Little Senegal, quartier de Harlem où vit la
communauté africaine. Animé par l’idée de réunir sa famille par
delà les siècles et les frontières, Alloune remonte jusqu’à une
lointaine cousine, Ida, qui ignore tout de son passé. Cette rencontre lui fera réaliser toutes les contradictions et les conflits
qui existent entre l’Amérique noir et l’Afrique noire.
Passionately fond of the history of his people, Alloune, an old guide
at the «Slave House» museum on Gorée Island, Senegal, leaves on
a pilgrimage to meet the descendants of his slave ancestors in the
United States. This moving journey will take him from the South
Carolina Coast to Little Senegal, a neighbourhood in Harlem
where the African community lives. Driven by the idea of reuniting
his family beyond centuries and borders, Alloune goes back to a
distant cousin, Ida, who knows nothing of her past. This meeting
makes him aware of all the contradictions and conflicts which
exist between Black America and Black Africa.

Synopsis
Kinshasa, où la vie nocturne et trépidante semble toujours prête à
engloutir le temps. Quelques rares privilégiés y mènent la grande
vie, au mépris de tous les laissés pour compte. Ceux qui n’ont rien
envient ceux qui ont tout et n’aspirent qu’à une seule chose : devenir les nouveaux maîtres de la nuit. Riva est l’un de ces rêveurs. Il
rentre au pays plein aux as après dix ans d’absence, bien déterminé à s’offrir une folle nuit de beuverie, de danse et de débauche.
Reine de la nuit, mystérieuse et distante, Nora danse et Riva est
subjugué. La belle appartient à un caïd local, mais Riva s’en moque :
il lui faut cette fille. Aura-t-il sa chance ? Son argent, Riva l’a «emprunté» à son ex-patron, un truand angolais qui le poursuit à travers la ville en semant la panique sur son passage.
Riva is an operator, a man with charm and ambition in equal measure.
Kinshasa is an inviting place. With petrol in short supply in DRC’s
capital, he and his sidekick pursue a plot to get hold of a secret cache
- barrels of fuel they can sell for a huge profit. Of course they’re not
the only ones who want the stuff. Cesar is a ruthless, sharply dressed
foreigner thriving in Kinshasa’s lawless streets. A female military officer
joins the fray. Even the church will betray its tenets for a piece of the
action. But Riva’s main nemesis is Azor, a crime boss in the classic
style: big, decadent and brutal. He’s not a man to mess with, but his
girlfriend, Nora, may just be the most seductive woman in all of DRC.
Riva catches sight of her dancing at a nightclub and it’s not long before
Nora matches the fuel cache as a coveted object of his lust.

Estelle is a very undertaking nice young woman who has chosen
against her parents’ wills to opt for her own «hairstyle saloon», in
which she invests herself entirely. Unfortunately as far as love is
concerned, Estelle is not as successful as her beauty, intelligence
and purity would imply. And yet in her district, a young dry-cleaner
manager named Marcus falls in love with her and seems to suffer
silently for he has difficulties to obtain Estelle’s friendship.

Au Mali, Nianankoro, un tout jeune homme, va recevoir le savoir destiné à lui assurer la maîtrise des forces qui l’entourent,
cette connaissance que les Bambaras se transmettent de
génération en génération. Son père supporte mal de la voir
devenir son égal et est prêt à le tuer. Sa mère décide de l’éloigner. Nianankoro traverse le désert, affronte des dangers
avant de retrouver son oncle. Celui-ci lui explique que l’affrontement avec son père est inévitable.
Suite au décès de son père, Amy, une jeune métisse vivant en
région parisienne, revient à Bobo au Burkina Faso, pour chercher sa mère dont elle a été séparée à l’âge de 8 ans. Elle ne
revoit que sa tante. Amy entourée d’une cour familiale aussi
rassurante qu’étouffante, va et vient dans une ville où elle n’a
plus de repère. Mariam, une burkinabé de 45 ans, est technicienne de surface et vit à Paris dans l’espoir de retrouver sa
fille. Depuis peu, elle a rencontré Esther, cadre dans l’entreprise où elle fait le ménage. Ester veut apprendre le dioula,
la langue maternelle de Mariam. Ces deux femmes solitaires
apprennent à s’apprécier.
Rihana est une jeune fille d’une vingtaine d’années issue de
la campagne. Victime d’un traumatisme aigu, elle se retrouve
hospitalisée dans un asile psychiatrique. Elle pense être
enceinte de Zayd un jeune de son village. Cet acte va-t-il être
approuvé par le seigneur du Cheval, un esprit vénéré par son
père ? Pour percer ce mystère Rihana est confiée à Zineb,
une psychiatre afin qu’elle fasse parler cette jeune fille qui
coopère difficilement. Zineb décide de mieux connaitre
cette fille, et d’affronter son passé douloureux. Elle ne sait
pas si cette fille ment, dit la vérité ou juste se refugie dans un
monde imaginaire et fantaisiste…Les cartes s’embrouillent,
Zineb perd petit à petit le control de la situation, et l’histoire
prend un autre détour.
A surreal coming-of-age drama featuring calligraphy and horses,
told through flashbacks and dreamscapes, Pegasus is the story
of a young girl who is found on the streets, wounded and with
no memories of her past but a mental reference to an unknown
Lord of the Horse. The plotline is intertwined with the experiences
of the troubled psychiatrist Dr Zineb, who is treating the young
woman in a hospital and trying to find out who she is..

Set in the powerful Mali Empire, Yeelen follows the journey of
Nianankoro, a young warrior who must battle the powerful Komo
cult. Nianankoro’s greatest enemy is his own father, a dangerous
and corrupt wizard who uses his dark magic to try and destroy his
son. Marked for death by his father, the young man bids goodbye
to his mother and heads for the hills. He journeys to his uncle to
request help in fighting his father.

Amy, a young mixed-race woman, travels to Bobo, Burkina to
reconnect with her mother whom she was separated from at the
age of eight. She only reunites with her aunt living in the family
home, and finds the courtyard of her childhood both comforting
and unsettling. She feels like a stranger in a city where she has no
bearings. The Place In Between contrasts Amy’s journey with a
story back in France. Esther takes lessons in the Dioula language
from a Burkinabé woman who also works as a cleaner. At first it’s
not clear why Esther - white, middle-aged and middle-class - wants
to learn an African language. But as the film juxtaposes these two
stories of women bridging the gap between Europe and Africa, the
connections become clear and ultimately heartbreaking.

Le Tchad de nos jours. Adam, la soixantaine, ancien champion de natation est maitre nageur de la piscine d’un hôtel
de luxe à N’Djamena. Lors du rachat de l’hôtel par des repreneurs chinois, il doit laisser la place à son fils Abdel. Il vit très
mal cette situation qu’il considère comme une déchéance
sociale. Le pays est en proie à la guerre civile et les rebelles
armés menacent le pouvoir. Le gouvernement, en réaction,
fait appel à la population pour un «effort de guerre» exigeant
d’eux argent ou enfant en âge de combattre les assaillants.
Adam est ainsi harcelé par son Chef de Quartier pour sa
contribution. Mais Adam n’a pas d’argent, il n’a que son fils...
Present-day Chad. Adam, sixty something, a former swimming
champion, is pool attendant at a smart N’Djamena hotel. When
the hotel gets taken over by new Chinese owners, he is forced to
give up his job to his son Abdel. Terribly resentful, he feels socially
humiliated. The country is torn by a civil war, rebel forces threaten
the capital city. The authorities demand that the population
contribute to the «war effort», giving money or volunteers old
enough to fight off the assailants. The District Chief constantly
harasses Adam for his contribution. But Adam is penniless, he only
has his son…

1803, sur les côtes des Cornouailles. Un gamin de 15 ans, le
Kid, réussit à s’échapper de l’orphelinat où il vit comme un bagnard. Il ne connaît pas son vrai nom et a pour seule richesse
la carte d’une île au trésor tombée du livre de Black Mór, un
célèbre pirate auquel il aimerait tant ressembler. En compagnie de deux pilleurs d’épaves, Mac Gregor et La Ficelle, le
Kid s’empare du bateau des garde-côtes et part à la recherche
de son île au trésor, à l’autre bout de l’océan Atlantique. Mais
rien ne se passe comme dans les livres de pirates. En quête de
son identité, le Kid est plus fragile qu’on ne le croit et bien
des aventures l’attendent avant d’arriver à l’île de Black Mór.
Le grand-père, trônant dans sa grotte bleue, explique : « L’histoire de était trop courte. On n’a pas eu le temps de rapporter tout ce que l’enfant avait accompli. Et il a vraiment
accompli de belles et bonnes actions, qu’il ne faudrait pas
oublier. Alors, je vous les raconte ». Et il nous dit comment
l’inventif Kirikou est devenu jardinier, détective, potier, marchand, voyageur et médecin, toujours le plus petit et le plus
vaillant des héros.
1803, Coast of Cornwall. A 15 year old boy, the Kid, escapes from
the orphanage where he lives like a convict. He doesn’t know his
real name and his only wealth is a map of a treasure island that fell
from the book of Black Mor, a famous pirate whom he wishes to
emulate. Two wreck-strippers, Mac Gregor and La Ficelle, join the
Kid to seize the coast guards’ boat in search of his treasure island
at the other end of the Atlantic Ocean. But nothing happens like
in the pirates’ books. In search of himself, the Kid is fragile and
many adventures await him before he arrives at Black Mór’s island.
The grandfather reigning in his blue cave explains: «The story
of Kirikou was too short. There was not enough time to report
everything the child had done. And he really did good deeds that
should not be forgotten. Hence, I’ll tell you his stories.» And he
tells us how the inventive Kirikou became a gardener, a detective,
a potter, a merchant, a traveller and a doctor, always the smallest
and the most valiant hero.
