you all to the 5th annual conference
of the Canadian Association of Radon
Scientists and Technologists.
CARST is funded through membership fees, donations and sponsorships and I am
delighted to see the growth in sponsorship funding that we received in 2015. These
contributions are needed and greatly appreciated. Your financial donations are carefully invested to raise public awareness and education, promote radon advocacy at the
federal, provincial and municipal levels of government, and to support other significant
radon stakeholder initiatives.
Since our last conference in Vancouver, your board has been hard at work meeting with
provincial policy makers and influencers to advocate for changes in building and labour
codes, which would lead to increased radon testing of homes, workplaces, schools/
daycares and to stronger radon prevention measures for new construction — more on
these initiatives during the conference. Board members have also participated in many
media interviews during the year and served on various committees focused on improving building standards for new and existing construction.
On behalf of all members, I would like to thank your Board of Directors, for the countless hours they generously give to enable CARST to fulfil its goal of preventing public
exposure to radon gas and saving lives. I would also like to add a special "thank you” to
Pam Warkentin, CARST Executive Assistant and Executive Director of C-NRPP. Without
Pam’s tireless energy, dedication and enthusiasm, CARST would not be where we are
today. When I pause to reflect on how far we have come over the past five years and
how much further we will go, I am excited and more optimistic, than at any other time.

President Message
This year's conference theme is "Connect and Educate”, and we have an excellent
agenda and line up of speakers and educators, whom I want to thank for taking the
time out of their busy schedules to present their research work, and share their experiences and knowledge. In Vancouver we had a record conference attendance, bringing
together speakers from seven countries and welcomed many stakeholder groups, who
were represented at our conference for the first time. Montreal promises to be another
memorable conference and special occasion, being held in "LaBelle Province” for the
first time.

L’ACSTR est financée par les frais d’adhésion des membres, les dons et les commandites et je suis ravi de voir l’augmentation du financement par commandites que nous
avons reçu en 2015. Ces contributions sont nécessaires et grandement appréciées,
vos dons financiers sont investis avec attention pour augmenter la sensibilisation et
l’éducation du public, promouvoir la cause du radon aux niveaux fédéral, provincial et
municipal et pour soutenir les initiatives d’autres parties prenantes.
Depuis notre dernier congrès de Vancouver, les membres de votre conseil
d’administration ont travaillé fort pour rencontrer les décideurs politiques et gens
d’influence au niveau provincial pour plaider en faveur de changements aux codes du
bâtiment et du travail qui mèneront à une augmentation des mesures du radon dans les
maisons, lieux de travail, écoles/garderies et à des mesures de meilleures méthodes de
prévention pour les nouvelles constructions – vous en apprendrez plus sur ces initiatives durant le congrès. Les membres du conseil ont aussi participé à plusieurs entrevues dans les médias durant l’année dernière et ont siégé à différents comités axés sur
l’amélioration de standards de construction pour les maisons neuves et existantes.
De la part de tous les membres, je voudrais remercier votre Conseil d’administration
pour le nombre incalculable d’heures qu’ils donnent généreusement pour permettre à
CARST/ACSTR de remplir ses buts de prévention du public à l’exposition au radon et
ainsi de sauver des vies. J’aimerais aussi ajouter un » merci » spécial à Pam Warkentin,
l’assistante exécutive de CARST/ACSTR et directeur exécutif de C-NRPP/PNCR-C.
Sans l’énergie inépuisable de Pam, son dévouement et son dynamisme, CARST/ACSTR
ne serait pas là où nous en sommes aujourd’hui. Lorsque je pense au chemin parcouru
lors de ces 5 dernières années et jusqu’où nous irons, je suis plus que jamais enthousiasmé et optimiste plus que jamais.

Le thème du congrès de cette année « Rejoindre et sensibiliser », à cet effet nous avons
un très bon programme avec d’excellents conférenciers et formateurs que je voudrais
remercier de prendre le temps malgré leurs agendas bien remplis pour nous offrir le
résultat de leurs recherches et de partager leurs expériences et leur savoir. À Vancouver
nous avons eu un record d’assistance avec des conférenciers de sept pays et la participation de plusieurs intervenants qui participaient pour la première fois à nos activités.
Pour la première fois dans « La Belle Province », Montréal promet d’être un autre
congrès mémorable avec des occasions spéciales.

méthodes de prévention pour les nouvelles constructions.
Alan Whitehead
President
For over 30 years Alan has served on the executive boards of a number of private and public sector
companies, operating globally in a diverse range of industries. These sectors include environmental
health and building sciences, mining exploration, chemicals and industrial minerals. He is President &
CEO of Radon Environmental Management Corp. and a founding board member and President of CARST.
Alan also serves on the Canadian National Radon Action Month Campaign Committee, the Coalition of
International Radon Associations, and Cancer Survivors Against Radon.
Through his leadership at Radon Environmental and as President of CARST, Alan is dedicated to the
prevention of radon-induced lung cancer and is passionate in making change happen.
Vice President
Steven Mahoney has been in public service for over 35 years. First elected as a City of Mississauga and
Region of Peel Councillor in 1978, he chaired the City’s influential Planning Committee during the community’s high growth development years. In 1987 Steve was elected as Member of Provincial Parliament for
the riding of Mississauga West. He was appointed Small Business Advocate and Parliamentary Assistant
to the Minister of Technology and Trade. Steve was Chief Whip of the Liberal Party of Ontario from 1990
to 1995. Two years later, in 1997, Steve was elected Member of Parliament for Mississauga West. He was
appointed to Cabinet by Prime Minister Jean Chretien in 2003.
Prior to his appointment to the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada in 2003, he was Parliamentary Secretary
to Deputy Prime Minister John Manley and Vice Chair of the Canadian Immigration and the Public
Accounts Committee. From 2006 through 2012 Steve was appointed by the Premier of Ontario as Chair
of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and from 2012 to 2015, Steve served in the position of
President and CEO of Radiation Safety Institute of Canada, where Steve became an active advocate for
radon outreach and awareness. Steve continues to serve as the Vice-President of CARST and is dedicated
to engaging other groups in the work of increasing awareness on radon.

Anne-Marie Nicol
Treasurer
Anne-Marie began her academic career in the social sciences at SFU (Communications BA) and then
developed a strong interest in environmental and occupational health during her Master’s degree at York
University (MES). She completed her PhD in Epidemiology at UBC where she currently teaches Risk
Assessment and Toxicology in the School of Population and Public Health.
Her areas of research span the diverse subjects of human health risk assessment, environmental health and
knowledge translation. In particular, she investigates how to improve the communication methods that are
used to describe population level exposures to cancer-causing substances, specifically using techniques
such as geographic information systems (GIS) and data visualization. Anne-Marie has also produced a
number of short videos to promote awareness of environmental hazards such as pesticides (Wash with
Care) and tick-borne diseases (the Tick Talk).
Marcel Brascoupe
Secretary
Marcel Brascoupe is a general construction contractor with a background in electrical and building
systems/HVAC working in the province of Quebec, specializing in the installation of radon mitigation
systems. He is certified with NRPP (and currently C-NRPP) for both radon measurement and radon
mitigation since February 2010 after receiving on-site training from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing
Corporation (CMHC), Mr. William Angell, and Mr. Jack Bartholomew. He has been an Assistant Community
Service Director with the Algonquin First Nation community of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg.
Marcel has been instrumental in a project to train work crews in different First Nation communities across
the province of Quebec and New Brunswick to identify and mitigate the radon issues they have encountered within their own communities. Marcel is bilingual in both French and English, and he is a founding
board member of CARST.

Michel is a Radiation Protection Physicist with a masters degree from Université de Montréal. He is certified
by C-NRPP for radon measurement and an advisor for Québec Radon Inc.

Québec Radon Inc. is a certified C-NRPP laboratory for the measurement of radon. Services are offered in
houses, residential buildings and schools. We also give information sessions to real estate personnel and
others on request.
Board of Directors
Bob Wood holds a Bachelor of Education, a BA in Adult Education and an Associate's Degree in Industrial
Training. Bob is a NRPP and C-NRPP certified radon mitigator and residential measurement professional
and a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO-1). He spent 30 years in the commercial/industrial sector as a plumber
and in other management roles. Bob is one of the certified instructors for the C-NRPP. He teaches exam
prep courses for both radon placement technicians, and the new CRNCH course for the construction
industry. Bob also provides public outreach courses about radon to the general public and to builder associations; He has also qualified for the National Speakers List on Radon and is a popular speaker at conventions. Mr. Wood owns Mr. Radon® and is a founding member of CARST.

Québec Radon Inc. est un laboratoire certifié pour le radon par le PNCR-C. Les services sont offerts
pour les résidences, les bâtiments résidentiels et commerciaux et les écoles. Nous offrons des séances
d’information pour les agents immobiliers et autres sur demande.
Scott Cryer
Director
Scott Cryer is the National Practice Lead for radon at Pinchin Ltd. and works out of their Mississauga,
Ontario office. A Professional Geoscientist (PGeo) since 2004, Scott has over 25 years of experience dealing with environmental, health & safety issues. His experience includes the assessment and management of
soil and groundwater contamination, asbestos and radon.
Scott is certified with the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) and the Canadian National Radon
Proficiency Program (C-NRPP) as a radon measurement and mitigation provider. Scott is a frequent speaker at industry, client and stakeholder events, as part of his efforts to raise awareness about the public health
concerns and practical solutions available to address radon in buildings. He has completed measurement
and mitigation projects ranging from single-family homes to portfolios of commercial and institutional buildings across Canada. He currently serves as Chair of the CARST Education Committee.
Rob Mahoney
Director
Rob Mahoney is the sole proprietor of Radon Works. Rob has been doing radon remediation in the OttawaGatineau region since 2007, when he was first asked to participate in a CMHC pilot project. The installation
of that system has now become a Health Canada standard for radon remediation.
Rob Mahoney has been in the commercial HVAC design and verification business for over 20 years. He
is the Commercial Consultant and IAQ Manager for one of Ottawa’s oldest HVAC companies. Rob graduated from the first gold seal certification course held by the Ottawa chapter of the Mechanical Contractor’s
Association. Rob’s initial foray into radon gas consisted of a sub slab depressurization system installed
under direct supervision of Arthur Scott (author of Canadian Guide for Professional Contractors.)
Director
Lauren Lipka is a C-NRPP Certified Radon Measurement, Mitigation and New Canadian Homes Installer
Professional. He also is a Certified Energy Advisor (CEA) and a licensed trainer for Natural Resources
Canada (NRCan) and has over 20 years of experience in the residential industry having worked in
Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland & Labrador. He presently lives in New Brunswick
and specializes in energy efficiency consultations, plan evaluations (Hot2000), air tightness testing and is
a trainer for R-2000, EnergyStar® for New Homes, New Homes Low Rise Multi-Unit Residential Buildings
and the EnerGuide Rating System for New and Existing Homes. Lauren is a Member of the Canadian Home
Builders’ Association (CHBA), CARST and the Heating, Refrigeration, Air Conditioning Institute of Canada
(HRAI). He currently serves on NRCan’s Energy Star Technical Committee and is First Vice-Chair of the
Technical Research Committee for the Canadian Home Builders’ Association New Brunswick (CHBA-NB).

Recently Lauren has lead the Province of New Brunswick in the implementation of the 2010 National
Building Code by developing and providing workshops to participants from all corners the residential
construction industry including the building inspection community and builders on how to comply with
Section 9.36 Energy Efficiency, Section 9.13.4. Soil Gas Control and 9.13.4.3. Providing for the Rough-in for
a Subfloor Depressurization System. Lauren has served as Regional Representative of the New Brunswick
Association of Real Estate Appraisers (NBAREA) and Fredericton Chamber of Commerce Sub-Committees.

Bill Rounds
Director
Bill Rounds is Vice President of LANDAUER RADON, INC., managing sales and operations for the Americas
and Australia. Bill is also the GM for HOMEBUYER’s PREFERRED, a business of Landauer Radon that
provides radon services to the corporate relocation marketplace.
Bill has been working with Landauer Radon (and previously Landauer, Inc.) for 15+ years, most recently
responsible for sales, operations, and P&L. Bill serves the radon community in numerous capacities,
including the AARST Foundation Board of Directors, Corporate Relocation Council (CRC) Board of
Directors, Midwest Relocation Council (MRC) Board of Directors, CARST Membership Committee, Mobility
Magazine Editorial Advisory Committee, as well as several program planning committees/panel moderator for Worldwide ERC, CRC, and MRC. Bill is a Certified Relocation Professional (CRP), and Global
Mobility Specialist (GMS), and is an active member of the American Association of Radon Scientists and
Technologists (AARST), the MW AARST, and CARST.
Colin Dumais
Director
Colin Dumais has a Bachelor of Science in Environment from the University of Calgary, a diploma in Object
Oriented Software Technology also from the University of Calgary, and is one of only 20 Canadians to have
achieved NABCEP certification for the design of Solar PV systems. He is also C-NRPP certified as a radon
measurement and mitigation professional.
Colin has worked professionally as a Software Engineer, a Technology Specialist and most recently as an
Environmental Policy Specialist where he influences policy at the Provincial and Federal levels. He loves
to share his passion for renewable energy and energy efficiency so he has developed relevant educational
curriculum and has presented many times on the topic to Universities and Colleges. Leading by example,
Colin built a modern, low-energy home that will be powered completely by onsite renewables. Colin continues to use the principals of engineering and technology to design mitigation systems that operate efficiently
and economically using enhanced diagnostic methods and procedures.
After finding and mitigating radon in his family’s home, he founded Radon West Ltd where he works to raise
radon awareness and ensure that mitigation systems are designed efficiently and are of the highest quality.
Director
Mark Diplock has accumulated over 15 years’ experience working as a home inspector. As a former owner
and president of a multi-inspector firm operating out of the Niagara region, he has gained an intrinsic
understanding of the home inspection industry, including its market and clientele, and the professionals
(inspectors) executing the services. With a strong background in construction, renovation, and professional
carpentry, Mark has earned his credentials and qualifications in building code, thermography, radon testing,
energy audits, and many more.

three new measurement technologies for radon in
air and water. The Rapidos® alpha track detector
combines the convenience of a short term radon
test with the accuracy benefits of a long term test.
Both accurate and flexible, it is one of the most
effective ways to measure radon in homes, schools
and workplaces.
The Radiation Safety Institute of Canada specializes in the individual monitoring of workers exposed
to radiation from radon, thoron, and long-lived
radioactive dust. As part of this monitoring service,
the Institute operates a radon calibration chamber
located at its National Laboratory in Saskatoon
SK. To help meet the needs of the growing radon
industry in Canada, the RSIC, in collaboration with
Health Canada, is working to have its chamber
certified as an approved secondary radon reference facility.

(ASD) field study and findings from the Cross Canada

education and awareness activities and accomplishments for 2015 will be reviewed and current projects
focused on increasing radon awareness and action
through workplace engagement, incorporating radon
education and testing with energy efficiency programs
and creating radon 'champions' in the health care
sector through a Health Professional training program

Mitigation Options for Existing Low Rise Buildings.
The technical content was developed by the two
working groups and via consultations and meetings
with the Technical Committee. The two committee
drafts were subjected to a public review commentary
period in fall 2015. Changes based on the public
review were proposed and made to the 149.12 existing
construction standards and it is expected to be ready
for a committee ballot in early spring 2016. Changes
to the 149.11 new construction standard are currently
being proposed and it is expected to be ready for a
committee ballot later in spring 2016. This presentation
will focus on the key highlights from the two
draft standards.

The 2014-15 radon screening exercise within Interior
Health Authority (IHA) buildings, owned and leased
space, involved the deployment of 2300 detectors under the goal of obtaining data across a vast
geographic area, and raising radon awareness among
the approximate 18,000 IHA employees. Test results
above the Guideline spurred significant consultation,
action to mitigate, and the development of a Radon
Exposure Control Plan.
RADON MAPPING AT THE TOWN LEVEL
Generalized information such as radon being the
second leading cause of lung cancer, the 2% lifetime
risk of lung cancer for a non-smoker at the Guideline,
or relating exposure to other causes of death is not
seen adequate in the corporate world, they want hard
facts, something that even Working Level comparisons can’t provide. Under the expectation of having
concrete individualized risk facts, this presentation
will describe the challenges of turning radon test
results into action, and stimulate thought toward future
communication strategy.

A combination of 51,000 basement-screening
measurements and 12,000 long-term measurements
collected from homes in New York State was used
to develop radon maps on the township level that
indicate the percentage of homes with 148 Bq/m3 (4
pCi/L) in the air of basements and living areas. The
average indoor radon concentration was estimated
for ~1000 towns in the state using both empirical and
Bayesian regression techniques to combine surficial
geology correlations with the measurement data. For
towns with >30 measurements, results obtained using
the two methods were equivalent (r2=0.96). Over half
of the houses in 212 towns contain basement-level
radon concentrations above 148 Bq/m3. Results of
long-term living-area radon risk estimates and an
earlier random survey results agreed within 20%,
demonstrating that the maps can be used to reliably
assess residential radon exposure.

COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS OF RADON IN
WATER

Of the 500 public water supplies in New York State
that have been measured for their radon content,
the highest levels occur in the southeastern section
of the state that is underlain by an extension of the
Reading Prong and were frequently accompanied by
increased levels of U and/or Ra. Studies showed that
when radon-laden water was used in showering and
washing clothes, airborne levels of radon increased
dramatically in the rooms’ air. Since radon gas will
easily emanate from a water sample, several collection
methods will be discussed, along with the advantages
and disadvantages of each. To examine the accuracy
of radon analyses by commercial, government, and
private laboratories, an intercomparison of radon-inwater standards was conducted. Identical, reusable,
radium-free radon-in-water standards were prepared
using a 226Ra-loaded filter sandwiched in polyethylene sheeting. The intercomparison showed that, at
three widely different levels, most of the participants
reported concentrations within 25% of the knowns
using a combination of radioanalytical techniques.

L'exercice de dépistage du radon au sein 2014-2015
Interior Health Authority (IHA) bâtiments, propriété et la
location d'espace, supposait le déploiement de 2300
détecteurs sous l'objectif de l'obtention des données
sur une vaste zone géographique, et d'élever le radon
sensibilisation parmi les près de 18 000 employés IHA.
Résultats d'essai au-dessus de la ligne directrice a
stimulé des consultations importantes, des mesures
pour atténuer, et l'élaboration d'un plan de contrôle de
l'exposition au radon. Des renseignements généraux
tels que le radon étant la deuxième cause de cancer
du poumon, la durée de vie de 2 % du risque de
cancer du poumon chez un non-fumeur à la ligne
directrice, ou à d'autres causes d'exposition relatives
de la mort n'est pas considérée adéquate dans le
monde de l'entreprise, ils veulent des faits incontestables, quelque chose que même les comparaisons au

Un défi de politique de radon, délivrée aux premiers
ministres provinciaux du Canada et les ministres de
la Santé en novembre 2015 vise une approche coordonnée, réponse de politiques axées sur la santé

to make radon a priority at the national and regional
level. Groups will organize by region/province to learn
from each other and dig further into the case studies
introduced in the previous plenary session. What’s it
going to take? Who will take the lead? Where do we
want to focus? When is a legal response necessary/
not? How can we set strategy and organize effectively
to bring about policy change?

Auditor, Technical Evaluations & QA, for the Canadian
National Radon Proficiency Program.
Early 2015, the CARST technical committee developed a performance specification for Home Radon
Alarms. These electronic, radon monitoring devices
are designed and intended for homeowners to use
much like the radon equivalent of a smoke detector.

Radon work in new construction appears so simple yet
what gets done, even inspector approved, is often of
little or no use in actually controlling radon. Although
the construction industry has dealt with ventilation of
all sorts and for a long time, there is no experience
with the creation of constant light depressurization.
How do gasses flow horizontally through sub-slab
materials and when, where and how do passive stacks
actually work are questions that are poorly understood
by designers, supervisors and tradespeople. Preparing
what was thought to be a simple video on radon
control for new construction turned out to be a major
challenge – breaking old habits and creating an understanding of new requirements. Jon Eakes will present
some of the fundamental information to be found in
his new Radon Control in New Canadian Construction
video series which is free to all on the web in both

Le travail sur le contrôle du radon dans les nouvelles
constructions semble si simple et pourtant ce qui est
fait, même approuvé par un inspecteur, est souvent
peu ou pas utile dans l’éventuel contrôle de radon.
Bien que l'industrie de la construction ait travaillé
avec la ventilation de toutes sortes et pour une longue
période, il n'y a pas d'expérience avec la création
d’une légère dépressurisation constante. Comment
circulent les gaz horizontalement à travers des matériaux sous la dalle, et quand, où et comment faire des
tuyaux passifs qui fonctionnent réellement sont des
questions qui sont mal comprises par les concepteurs,
les superviseurs et les gens de métier. Ce qui a été
pensé à être une simple vidéo sur le contrôle du
radon pour la nouvelle construction a fini par être un
défi majeur. Briser les vieilles habitudes et la création
d'une compréhension des nouvelles exigences était

This paper summarizes the Home Radon Alarm
performance and “Type Test” requirements developed
by CARST; and details major sections of C-NRPP’s
“Home Radon Alarm Listing Implementation &
Review Manual.” An overview of the C-NRPP listing
process will be presented, as will requirements for the
Manufacturer’s QA Manual, and a discussion of documents each manufacturer has to submit to C-NRPP for
review and approval.

air concentrations (prompting a C-NRPP certified
professional radon test). Said devices are not intended
to be used for commercial purposes, nor professional
radon concentration measurements, or to make radon
mitigation decisions.

Kelley Bush has been the Section Head responsible for Radon Education and Awareness (E&A)
since 2008 at the Radiation Protection Bureau in
Health Canada. Prior to joining Health Canada
Kelley worked in the private sector as a marketing
and sales management professional. With over 15
years of progressively more senior management
and leadership roles, she has a strong acumen
for converting ideas into practical proposals and
ensuring their successful execution. Kelley holds a
Bachelor of Commerce with honours in Marketing
from Concordia University.

Kathy Cooper has worked in environmental research
positions for 30 years. As Senior Researcher at
CELA, and a paralegal, she supports CELA’s
environmental litigation, conducts law reform and
public legal education, and serves on the steering committees of the Canadian Partnership for
Children’s Health and Environment (CPCHE) and
the Low-Income Energy Network (LIEN). She has
authored several publications about the effects of
environmental contaminants on fetal and child health
as well as links to later life chronic disease. Recent
work has addressed the integration of environmental
health protection into energy efficiency programs,

During my graduate and post-graduate studies
(2008-2015) at the Institut national de la recherche
scientifique (Eau Terre Environnement Center), I
worked on the identification of the radon-prone
areas based on proxy criteria in the province of
Quebec. My Ph.D. thesis presents an approach
to predict the indoor radon potential based on
radiogeochemical data and indoor radon measurements. The relations between the proxy criteria
(radiogeochemical data) and the indoor radon
measurements were established using KruskalWallis one-way analysis of variance. The map of the
geogenic radon potential that was produced helped
the health authorities to identify the radon-prone
areas in Quebec. I also demonstrated the usefulness of the local structural geology characteristics
to predict indoor radon concentrations in my thesis.
These research projects were carried out in partnership with the ministère de la Santé et des Services
sociaux du Québec and the Institut national de
santé publique du Québec. Since May 2015, I am
a post-doctoral fellow also at the INRS-ETE. I now
work within a new research group in geophysics.
During February and March 2016, I was at the US
Geological Survey in San Francisco. The INRS and
the USGS work together on the estimation of the
Curie depth in the province of Quebec from North
American aeromagnetic data. Using an inversion

approach, we aim to estimate the geothermal potential in the province of Quebec.

Je me suis intéressé à la problématique du radon
dans l’air intérieur des bâtiments québécois dans
le cadre de mes études de deuxième et troisième
cycles (2008-2015) à l’Institut national de la recherche scientifique (Centre Eau Terre Environnement).
Ma thèse de doctorat portait sur la modélisation du
potentiel d’émission de radon dans l’air intérieur à
partir d’indicateurs de nature géologique combinés
à des analyses de variance de Kruskal-Wallis. Ces
analyses statistiques ont permis de mesurer les relations qui existent entre les indicateurs et les mesures
de radon dans l’air intérieur. Les zones d’intervention
prioritaire au Québec ont été identifiées à partir de
ces analyses. Je me suis également intéressé à
l’effet de la présence de failles géologiques à proximité des bâtiments sur les concentrations en radon
à l’intérieur de ceux-ci. Ces projets de recherche
ont été effectués en partenariat avec le ministère
de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec
et l’Institut national de santé publique du Québec.
Depuis mai 2015, je suis stagiaire postdoctoral,
également à l’INRS-ETE. J’ai intégré une équipe de
recherche avec une toute autre expertise puisque
je m’intéresse désormais à la géophysique. Je suis
allé à la US Geological Survey à San Francisco en
février et mars 2016 pour amorcer une collaboration entre l’INRS et la USGS. Nos travaux portent
sur l’estimation de la profondeur de Curie à partir
des données aéromagnétiques nord-américaines.
Cette méthode d’inversion peu commune permettra d’évaluer le potentiel géothermique au Québec
et ainsi donner des outils justificatifs à l’exploiteur
potentiel de cette ressource (Hydro-Québec).
Michael E. Kitto has been a research scientist in
the Nuclear Chemistry Laboratory at the New York
State Department of Health in Albany, NY (USA) for
over 28 years. His efforts are directed to identify and
reduce exposure to various radioactivity in air, water,
soil, and foods, as well as respond to cases
of radiological contaminations and emergencies.
The majority of his research focuses on the occurrence of radon and other radionuclides in air and
water, resulting in 50 peer-reviewed journal publications and 60 speaker presentations. Dr. Kitto is
the current chairman of both the AARST Technical
and Science Committee and the Radon in Water
Measurements Committee.
Judith Lord
Directorate of Montérégie Public Health
Judith Lord has a Bachelor's degree in chemistry,
specializing in Biochemistry from the University of
Concordia, and a Masters in Occupational Health,
with specialization in occupational hygiene from
McGill University. She has worked for 25 years in
occupational hygiene including the last 17 years at
the Montérégie Public Health Department, where
she sees to consistency and updates in occupational hygiene practice in particular on exposure assessment to chemical, physical or biological agents. She
collaborates on epidemiological investigations, and
participates in regional and provincial government
committees, within the occupational public health
network and with external partners such as the
CNESST, the IRSST, and the University of Montreal.

Britt oversees all research, education, public
outreach, partnerships and special projects for
the RadonAware program. She has been involved
in advancing public health issues and policy for
the past six years; working closely alongside the
private, public and non-profit sectors. As part of
the RadonAware team, Britt has been involved in
community-wide radon testing projects, provincial
radon awareness campaigns, and in-field studies to assist in the advancement of provincial
Building Code measures for radon protection.
Britt has undergraduate degrees in Education and
Commerce, a Certificate in Sustainable Building
Design, recently completed the C-NRPP coursework
for radon measurement, and is currently enrolled in
Alberta’s Public Policy Training Institute. In the fall,
Britt will be furthering her passion for public health
advocacy by pursuing a Master in Public Health &
Social Policy through the University of Victoria. Britt
currently lives with her husband and son in beautiful
Victoria, British Columbia.

Jeff Whyte has a BSc in Chemistry and MSc in
Analytical Chemistry from Queen’s University. After
working in private sector research, he joined Health
Canada’s Radiation Protection Bureau in 1995 as
a radiochemist in the National Monitoring Section
(NMS). He has managed the NMS several times
including during the 2011 Fukushima response.
Since 2008, Jeff has managed the science behind
Health Canada’s National Radon Program.

Dr. Brigitte Pinard is a medical specialist in Public
Health and Preventive Medicine. Since 2013, she has
practised as Medical Advisor, Environmental Health
for the Outaouais Public Health Authority in western
Quebec, including the City of Gatineau.

contre le radon. Britt a des diplômes de premier

du radon, et est actuellement inscrite au Alberta’s

Radon is the first leading environmental cause of
lung cancer and responsible for over 3000 deaths a
year in Canada.
Canadians are slowly growing in their understanding
of radon and how they need to respond to prevent
lung cancer for themselves and their family. CARST
runs an annual conference as a way to achieve our
goals. This radon conference is an opportunity for
sharing ideas, research and developing new methods for increasing radon awareness across Canada.
Past conferences have been valuable opportunities
for professionals to connect, inspire and learn from
one another. They have been a place for organizations to share and hear about work of others in the
field of radon research, awareness and health.
