Aymeric KUNTZ, 11/09/2015 THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST AND THE EUROPEAN UNION Created in 1956 by the European Brodcasting Union (EBU), the Eurovision Song Contest brings together 40 countries from the EBU. Australia, wich is not part of the EBU, took part in the 2015 edition, because it has been broadcasting the program for over 30 years., wich was a way to thank the country for its support and its involvement. This contest has a special voting procedure, because that's the viewers from the 40 participating countries that have the responsibility to elect the winning country, without beeing allowed to vote for their own country. The main problem with this rule is that audiences do not necessarily vote for the country they consider has delivered the best performance, but for other reasons, including geopolitical ones. Indeed, there are « alliances » between countries, which can be explained by historical and cultural ties. For example, countries from ex-Yugoslovia are those who are most likely to vote for each other in every edition, offering the maximum points. France has allied with its neighboring countries in order to incite French audiences to vote for Luxembourg, Belgium and Italy, hoping to get those countries' votes in return. These alliances between have been controverside, some even calling for a boycott of the TV show, holding that the competition is moving away from its original music roots. Nevertheless, the general audiences of the contest keep growing every years, from 106 millions viewers in 2008 to 197 millions in 2015. The show is still a highly anticipated annual event accros Europe, offering festive and lively songs, playing the card of good humor.
