Summer of Photography 18.06 > 31.08.2014 35 partners in Brussels More than 85 artists Special focus on Gender relations www.summerofphotography.be An initiative of Sponsors BO ZAR Partners I AM PURE PHOTOGRAPHY Media partners I AM THE NIKON Df. I am the fusion of Nikon’s iconic SLR design with the latest Pro technology. ISO extendable up to 204,800, 16.2 MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 3 processor. I am the best from the past and today in one body. nikon.be 3 V rouwen werden eeuwen anders gewaardeerd, beoordeeld en behandeld dan mannen. Nous vous souhaitons à tous une agréable visite ! 4 or centuries, women were valued, judged, and treated differently from men. Male thinking and activity was centre stage. Women were “different” and had to accept different goals and a different role and place in society. Successive feminist waves, however, stood up for women’s rights. Starting in the 1960s, women broadened the feminist debate to include issues of sexuality, the family, and work, as well as legal and political rights, via forceful campaigns and stirring slogans such as “Keep your filthy laws off my body”. Today, too, activists’ provocative activities make international headlines, from the Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot to the international FEMEN movement. At first, Europe and the US set the tone. Today, however, the struggle for women’s rights is a worldwide phenomenon. New issues have made their appearance in the debate on gender: the way women are presented on the Internet, the rights of lesbian women to have children, the rights of women in other cultures, etc. As time goes by, the male perspective has also attracted increasing attention: equal rights for women affect men too. A number of Summer of Photography exhibitions show the perspectives of different curators and artists on these topical issues. We would like to thank all the event’s partners, as well as the many photographers, both young and established, Belgian and international, whose work is on show in Brussels in 2014. We wish everyone enjoyable visits to the many exhibitions! Exhibiting is sharing. The exhibition space enables us to express ourselves and generates a debate on gender diversity and empowerment. The pictures by these artists – both men and women – hold up a mirror to our society, challenging stereotypes and denouncing, questioning, and addressing various current issues related to equality: stereotypes, sexism, prostitution, abortion, gender roles, transgenderism, female emancipation, the image of women and men in advertising, nudity, identity and gender expression, the cultural evolution of gender roles, the impact of culture on gender roles, violence, sexism, feminism, male domination, and so on. Art has for centuries been a powerful tool for bringing about changes in attitudes and public awareness. Art questions things. It reveals the major societal issues of our times and highlights universal and timeless observations. In this sense, let us hope that these exhibitions will encourage each visitor to be aware of the diversity of genders and their expressions, rather than to think of them in binary terms (man versus woman, male versus female), and of the issue of equality for women and men. Doorheen hun werk bevragen zij de bestaande rolpatronen en stimuleren een maatschappij in permanente ontwikkeling. he Summer of Photography is a biennale for contemporary photography, now taking place for the fourth time. French-speaking and Dutchspeaking partners have together created a lively platform for photography, with dozens of exhibitions and events. The Summer of Photography has become part of the wide array of festivals in the Brussels-Capital Region. Brussels is a lively, hip capital that excels itself and plays a key role in the cultural dynamics of Europe. By supporting numerous cultural activities that reflect cultural diversity, we contribute to developing the image of Brussels as a broadminded and flourishing centre in Europe. A great many partners have been brought together in relation to the theme of gender relations. Artistic and socio-cultural organisations have joined forces to put together a festival that presents and stimulates today’s debate on gender issues. This is an important initiative, as Brussels strives for equal rights for all its inhabitants. In this debate, a considerable number of organisations and individuals focus on the question of equal rights for men and women. This equality has been enshrined in Belgian law since 2002, but much still needs to change in reality. The Summer of Photography offers artists, male and female, young and established, a platform so that they can play a role in the wide-ranging debate on gender. Through their work, they question existing role patterns and provide a stimulus to a society that is constantly developing. 8 T 9 BO ZAR friends Tentoonstellingen | Expositions | Exhibitions BOZAR WOMAN. De groepstentoonstelling WOMAN. The Feminist Avant-Garde from the 1970s. Works from the SAMMLUNG VERBUND, Vienna omvat 450 werken van 29 vrouwelijke artiesten. NL L’exposition WOMAN. The Feminist Avant-Garde from the 1970s. Works from the SAMMLUNG VERBUND, Vienna rassemble 450 œuvres de 29 artistes féminines. The Feminist Avant-Garde from the 1970s: Works from the SAMMLUNG VERBUND, Vienna brings together 450 works by 29 female artists. Art history shows that the “image of woman” is actually the product of male projections. In the 1970s female artists, for the first time in art history, created the “image of woman” themselves. They studied their own bodies and created the prospect of determined feminine identities in a provocative, radical, poetic, and ironic manner. The curator Gabriele Schor calls this art movement the “Feminist Avant-Garde” to emphasise “the pioneering and collective role that these artists played for the last four decades” and believes that “many Feminist Avant-Garde artists – and their works – have yet to be discovered.” EN 13 18.06 > 31.08.2014 Where we’re at! The Kannun, a collection of medieval laws, passed on by word of mouth, permits families to replace the male head of a household by a woman in the event of the patriarch’s death. These “oath-virgins” or Burrnesha not only receive the status but also the rights of men and are highly respected in the family. They adapt to their roles so perfectly that, over time, they are no longer recognised as women outside of their families. Over the years, the woman in them is lost. The pose of the models and the contrast between their faces and the dark background create a visual protocol. The photographer and his model face each other in silence. Ontnuchtering, bevreemding of veeleer verwondering? Emilie Danchin has successfully explored a middle course, a sort of third way between the genders. The characters in her work seem confused and uncertain. The photographs, moreover, do not seem to fit in their frames, even though they are traditionally and meticulously produced. Despite the diagnosis, the label, or the interpretation, it is the echoes, the displacements, and the ambiguities that count in these images.
