“Family Library” project awarded by BBC Children in Need
NEW PORT, WAL E S (UNITE D KI NG DOM ), SATURD AY, 16 SEP TEM BE R 2007. South People’s
Projects-SoPPro, a new registered charity set up in Newport, has been awarded a grant by BBC
Children in Need for their project “Family Library Leopold Sédar Senghor”.
When received the award confirmation letter, Norbert Mbu-Mputu, the coordinator, said: “It is a
duty for us to use our skills and imagination to tackle the school under-achievement and antisocial behaviour of our young people. Our “Family Library” project wants to help with the positive
development of young people especially, but not exclusively, of Black Ethnic Minority.
The project will distribute a bookcase of basics books, dictionaries, encyclopaedias, atlas, etc.
associated with some games and toys to 20 asylum seekers and refugees’ families, about 40
children. Workshops, libraries visits and mentoring supports will be associated to this project. As
parents of African background and of oral culture could not afford the luxury of buying books to
their children and for themselves, some adult books will be included in the package. Books offered
will fill the possible vacuum of the lifelong education of parents, the after school and encourage
education of children especially during holidays’ periods. Others organisations and community
groups, locals authorities, police and others services, are also invited to include their leaflets,
booklets or other literature to the “Family Library”. Books, materials and any kind of supports are
all welcome. An evaluation will be done at the end of the project so that it could be improved and
popularized in the future somewhere else for the benefice of our families and children.
Frederic Yamusangie, writer and contributor in the project, explained about the name of the
project that Leopold Sédar Senghor was known as the citizen of all the continents; he was a
cultural mulatto, a real man belonging to two cultures: African and Western’ one. First Black
holder of aggregation in Grammar, he became the first president of Senegal and he was one of
the first African presidents to freely resign and he became the first Black to be elected member of
the prestigious French Academy. As a famous poet, his writings reflected his strong links
between the two worlds. And, about the globalisation, he said, decades ago, that the future
civilisation will be the “meeting of to giving and to receiving” and about the positive contribution to
make, he said that Black people must every time asked themselves what could be their inputs in
that future civilisation before expected any output from others. Senghor is an icon and role model
for education of Black people and school achievement for our young people; he is one of greatest
black achievers.
Running a sign-posting office providing translating, interpretations and ICT facilities, South
People’s Projects aims are the relief of poverty, to advance the education of African people
living both in Africa and in the UK, in particular asylum seekers, refugees and migrants by
providing them with training, free information (publishing a community newsletter) and linking
members and beneficiaries with mainstream and others organisations and services. SoPPro is
encouraging people to make positive contribution with their skills for the benefice of our
multicultural community and to learn about the British and others cultures. END

Le projet “Bibliothèque Familiale” finance par BBC Children in Need
NEW PORT, Pays de Galles (Royaume-Uni), Samedi, 16 SEP TEM BRE 2007. South People’s
Projects-SoPPro, une Organisation Non Gouvernementale fondée à Newport et nouvellement
agrée, vient de recevoir un financement de «BBC Children in Need» pour son projet
“Bibliothèque Familiale Léopold Sédar Senghor”.
Lorsqu’il reçu la lettre de confirmation de ce financement, Norbert Mbu-Mputu, le coordonnateur
de SoPPro, a déclaré: “C’est un devoir et un impératif pour un chacun d’utiliser ses talents, ses
aptitudes et toute son imagination créatrice pour lutter contre le bas niveau scolaire et surtout les
mauvais comportements antisociaux de nos jeunes. Notre projet “Bibliothèque Familiale” voudrait
tout simplement contribuer et essayer une nouvelle approche pour aider positivement au
développement et à la croissance de nos jeunes, spécialement et non pas exclusivement, ceux
des familles des noirs et ayant émigrés en Grande Bretagne.
Le projet distribuera à 20 familles, soit à 40 enfants, une petite bibliothèque constituée des livres
de base et essentiels : les encyclopédies, dictionnaires, atlas, etc… associés à quelques jeux et
jouets. Les jeunes s’habitueront ainsi à se familiariser avec les livres et à pouvoir penser les
posséder. Il sera organisé aussi des visites guidés dans les librairies, des séminaires et
conférences et des spécialistes de suivies des enfants seront aussi associés au projet. Comme
nombreux parents d’origine africaine, nés et grandis dans une civilisation de l’oralité, ne peuvent
pas se permettre le luxe d’offrir un livre à leurs enfants ou à eux-mêmes, certains ouvrages pour
adulte seront aussi inclus dans le paquet. Ces livres pourront ainsi contribuer à combler le vide et
les périodes des vacances et temps libres et aider à améliorer notre éducation diffuse. Les
autres organisations communautaires, les autorités de tutelle, les autorités locales,
gouvernementales et la police, sont aussi invités à joindre le projet et y inclure aussi leurs
prospectus et brochures et autres littératures dans notre « Bibliothèque Familiale ». Toute
assistance est la bienvenue. Une évaluation sera faite à la fin du projet afin de l’améliorer et
surtout de le vulgariser ailleurs, au bénéfice de nos familles et de nos enfants.
Fréderic Yamusangie, écrivain et ayant contribué au projet, a expliqué pourquoi le nom de
Léopold Sédar Senghor a-t-il été choisi pour nommer ce projet. Senghor, a-t-il expliqué, fut
surtout connu comme un citoyen de tous les continents, il était un vrai métis culturel, une
personne ayant appartenu à deux cultures : la culture africaine et la culture occidentale. Premier
noir agrégé de grammaire, il devint le premier Président du Sénégal et fut l’un des premiers
présidents africains à pouvoir démissionner librement de ses fonctions, puis il fut élu membre de
la prestigieuse Académie Française. Poète célèbre, ses écrits reflètent toujours cette
appartenance aux deux mondes. Et, au sujet de l’actuelle civilisation que nous appelons
volontiers la mondialisation, Léopold Sédar Senghor a dit qu’elle sera « un rendez-vous du
donner et du recevoir » et, au sujet de la contribution positive des Noirs dans l’héritage mondial
et universel, il a dit que nous devrons d’abord nous demander ce que nous allons y apporter
avant de chercher à en tirer des bénéfices. Senghor reste un monument et un modèle pour
l’avancement et de la réussite scolaire à offrir à nos enfants.
