ACTIVITY 1
Dans un discours prononcé en 2005 à l’occasion du National Education Summit
on High Schools au sujet de la qualité de l’enseignement aux Etats-Unis, Bill
Gates, patron de Microsoft, présente quelques exemples d’établissements
scolaires modèles:
« […] These are the kind of results you can get when you design a high
school to prepare every student for college. These are not isolated
examples. These are schools built on principles that can be applied
anywhere – the new three R’s, the basic building blocks of better high
schools:
• The first R is Rigor – making sure all students are given a challenging
curriculum that prepares them for college or work;
• The second R is Relevance – making sure kids have courses and
projects that clearly relate to their lives and their goals;
• The third R is Relationships – making sure kids have a number of
adults who know them, look out for them, and push them to achieve.

QUESTION:
Quel problème majeur le texte pose-t-il au traducteur et quelles sont les deux
options possibles permettant de le résoudre ?

Lorsqu’un texte anglais puise une grande partie de son vocabulaire dans le grec
ou le latin, comme le fait le français, le traducteur est souvent tenté de
reproduire littéralement les mots du texte source, tombant ainsi dans le piège
des « faux amis ». Parfois, seule la forme diffère d’une langue à l’autre ; parfois,
le sens est totalement différent. Dans le texte ci-après, extrait d’un site Internet
appelé « Beyond Prejudice », relevez trois exemples de faux amis :
« Prejudices will be dealt with here as a single set of dynamics that function
to dehumanize people who are identifiably different in some way from the
people whose perceptions are limited by the dysfunction we call prejudice.
This approach is taken for two reasons. First, it is easily defensible through
the understanding of the dynamics of prejudices; and second, the continued
separation and classification of prejudices according to the superficial
categories of those who are prejudiced is a disservice to those who are the
targets of discrimination and a distortion of reality. »
ACTIVITY 3
Vous êtes chargé de traduire en français les documents expliquant l’accès au
Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York. Relevez deux informations qui exigent
de la part du traducteur souplesse et vigilance.
« All of the Museum's galleries, as well as all special exhibitions, dining
facilities, and the Met Store, are fully accessible to visitors with
mobility impairments. Dotted lines on the floor plan indicate
convenient routes through the building for visitors in wheelchairs,
bypassing escalators and stairs. For a sense of scale, the distance is
about 1/8 mile between the 81st Street entrance and the Information
Desk in the Great Hall; and about 1/8 mile between the Information
Desk in the Great Hall and the American Wing.
Accessible restrooms are indicated on the floor plan by a wheelchair
symbol next to the restroom icon. Unisex restrooms for visitors
requiring assistance from a companion are located next to the Grace
Rainey Rogers Auditorium on the first floor. »
