The entry of Portugal in the media era:
The entry of Portugal in the media era: press and urban mass culture in the transition from 19th to 20th century Luís Augusto Costa Dias (Ceis20, Univ. Coimbra) In the «invention of games» that is, to some extent, the task of the historian - after all, the task of all scientific effort to dismantle appearances and establish the relevance of deeper meanings in studied phenomena - change the «angle of vision» can allow us to surprise a more subtle historical process, without changing, of course, any data that are offered by this reality, but change data as they are offered, in order to understand a reality with more dense meanings. In the state of art on Portuguese cultural history of the late nineteenth century and the beginning of next century, there has been persistently appointed our country's endemic illiteracy, then about 75% of individuals without instruction, the cause of a cultural delay that structural historiography of 50’s and 60’s (and in his inheritance till 90’s) thickened into a tragedy and a more recent historiography turned grotesque. However, in the studied period, a significant evolution of Portuguese society was not contemplated or came from the activities that occupied almost 80% of rural population; but rather involved the urban environments that participated in a framework of multiplier effects of slow (also contradictory), while actual transformation of public space, that means publishing space, but also a largest space of communication. For what concerns a new cultural history, the period we are talking about (a structural cycle of 50 years of analysis) is marked by economic growth and social mobility, by progress factors on technology and invention, new relationship in the social body that led to an increasing importance of urban environments, and here to an autonomy of social and cultural structures, languages, material tools, also communication and perception devices. How? This is what we seek to understand, considering the foundation and growth of an urban mass culture that marked, as elsewhere in Europe, the entry of Portugal in the media era.
