Highlighting the Impacts of
North-South Research
Collaboration among Canadian
and Southern Higher Education
Partners
Call for Papers
The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada
(AUCC) is pleased to announce a call for papers for a
colloquium on collaborative research for development on
June 6-7, 2005. Funded by the International Development
Research Centre (IDRC) and in collaboration with the
Canadian Association for Studies in Development (CASID)
and the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research
(CCGHR), the event will be held at IDRC in Ottawa,
Ontario, Canada.
The theme is Highlighting the Impacts of North-South
Research Collaboration among Canadian and Southern
Higher Education Partners. The colloquium will profile
selected papers featuring the multiple dimensions of
impacts, in Canada and in the South, of research
collaboration between Canadian and Southern university
researchers.
Researchers from the South whose papers are selected for
presentation will receive travel and accommodation support
to attend the colloquium.
The deadline for proposals is January 14, 2005. The list of
accepted proposals will be posted on AUCC’s web site in
early March 2005.

Appel à Communications
Les 6 et 7 juin 2005, l'Association des universités et collèges
du Canada (AUCC) a le plaisir d’annoncer un appel de
communications pour un colloque sur la recherche concertée
en développement. Subventionné par le Centre de
recherches pour le développement international (CRDI), et
organisé en collaboration avec l’Association canadienne
d’études du développement international (ACEDI) et la
Coalition canadienne pour la recherche en santé mondiale
(CCRSM), le colloque se tiendra à l’auditorium du CRDI à
Ottawa (Ontario), Canada.
Il aura pour thème « Principaux impacts des collaborations
de recherche Nord-Sud entre les partenaires des
établissements d’enseignement supérieur du Canada et du
Sud ». Il mettra en relief des communications choisies qui
traiteront des multiples facettes des impacts, tant au Canada
que dans des pays du Sud, qu’ont les travaux de recherche
réalisés conjointement par des chercheurs universitaires
d’ici et du Sud.

WTO/GATS for higher
education in Africa
The inclusion of education as
tradable service under the regime of
the World Trade Organisation’s
General Agreement on Trade in
Services has raised serious concern
among the higher education
community. While prospects for
innovation
in
institutional
management, use of ICT for
program delivery, and contribution
to economy are recognized, the
issues of concern include the threat
of GATS to:
o Education as a public good;
o Public funding of HE;
o Access to HE;
o Education as a social right;
o Support for research;
o Program diversification;
o National autonomy;
o Academic freedom;
o Cultural identity, etc.
