Biographical note: Jean Simon
Jean Simon was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Bank of Canada in May 2015.
Born in Grand-Mère, Quebec, he holds a bachelor’s degree in physics engineering from
Université Laval and a certificate in business administration from Université du Québec à
Chicoutimi. He also completed the Directors Education Program in partnership with the
Institute of Corporate Directors and the Rotman School of Management (University of
Toronto).
Mr. Simon has extensive experience in strategy, business management, operations, research
and development, labour negotiations, and stakeholder management, which he acquired during
a 34-year career in the aluminum industry. He first joined Alcan (now Rio Tinto Alcan) in 1979
and occupied increasingly senior management positions, including General Manager of
Vaudreuil Works (2001–02); Vice-President (2002–04) and then President (2004–05) of
Operations of Alcan Primary Metal Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean; President of Alcan Primary
Metal Quebec and USA (2005–06); and President of Rio Tinto Alcan Primary Metal North
America (2006–11). At the time of his retirement in June 2013, he was the company’s
President of RTA Primary Metal, a newly-integrated unit that covered operations in North
America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Mr. Simon has made significant contributions to for-profit and non-profit organizations at the
Board level, particularly in the metals sector. He is a past President of both the Board of
Directors for the Aluminum Association of Canada and the Executive Committee of the U.S.
Aluminum Association. He is currently Chairman of the Board of AluQuébec and sits on the
Board of Directors for Votorantim Metais. He also serves on the Board of Directors for la
Fondation de ma vie, le Centre de santé et de services sociaux de Chicoutimi and la Fondation
de l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi.
Mr. Simon is a former Board member of the Canadian Club of Montreal, le Conseil des
manufacturiers du Québec and the ABI Owners’ Committee. He is also a former member of the
Board of Governors of le Conseil du patronat du Québec and past President of the Board of
Directors for le Centre patronal de santé et sécurité du travail du Québec. In addition, he has
been a member of the Canadian American Business Council and the business association
QG100.

Jean Simon a été nommé membre du Conseil d’administration de la Banque du Canada en
mai 2015.
Né à Grand-Mère, au Québec, M. Simon est titulaire d’un baccalauréat en génie physique de
l’Université Laval et d’un certificat en administration des affaires de l’Université du Québec à
Chicoutimi. Il a aussi suivi le Programme de perfectionnement des administrateurs, élaboré
conjointement par l’Institut des administrateurs de sociétés et la Rotman School of
Management de l’Université de Toronto.
M. Simon possède une vaste expérience dans les domaines de la stratégie, de la gestion
opérationnelle, des opérations, de la recherche-développement, des négociations collectives et
de la gestion des parties prenantes, acquise au cours d’une carrière de 34 ans dans l’industrie de
l’aluminium. Entré au service d’Alcan (aujourd’hui Rio Tinto Alcan) en 1979, il y a occupé des
postes de direction aux responsabilités croissantes, dont les suivants : directeur général de
l’usine Vaudreuil (2001-2002); vice-président (2002-2004) et président (2004-2005), Alcan
Métal primaire, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean; président, Alcan Métal primaire, Québec et ÉtatsUnis (2005-2006); président, Rio Tinto Alcan Métal primaire, Amérique du Nord (2006-2011).
Au moment de prendre sa retraite, en juin 2013, il détenait le poste de président, Rio Tinto
Alcan Métal primaire, unité nouvellement intégrée dont les activités s’étendaient en Amérique
du Nord, en Europe, en Afrique et au Moyen-Orient.
M. Simon a joué un rôle important au sein des conseils d’administration d’organismes à but
lucratif et sans but lucratif, notamment dans le secteur des métaux. Il a été président du conseil
d’administration de l’Association de l’aluminium du Canada et président du comité de direction
de l’Aluminum Association des États-Unis. Il est actuellement président du conseil
d’administration d’AluQuébec et siège au conseil d’administration de Votorantim Metais. Il est
aussi membre des conseils d’administration de la Fondation de ma vie, du Centre de santé et de
services sociaux de Chicoutimi et de la Fondation de l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi.
M. Simon a siégé au conseil d’administration du Cercle canadien de Montréal, du Conseil des
manufacturiers du Québec et du Comité des propriétaires ABI. Il a également été membre du
Bureau des gouverneurs du Conseil du patronat du Québec, du Conseil des affaires
canadiennes-américaines et du Réseau QG100, ainsi que président du conseil d’administration
du Centre patronal de santé et sécurité du travail du Québec.
