Welcome to the first newsletter of 2015! If you have
Welcome to the first newsletter of 2015! If you have anything you wish to include in future editions, please email [email protected] Boaters and Swimmers Boaters are constantly on the lookout for navigation buoys, loons, and other boaters. Sometimes overlooked or not easily seen are swimmers. Most boaters keep an eagle eye out for swimmers and most swimmers stick close to shore or have a ‘safety’ boat accompany them when they’re making that ‘iron man’ swim to a distant island. But there have been times when boats, especially jet skis, have sped close to shore or past a nearby swimming platform and in spite of the frantic waves and splashes of swimmers have nearly caused a tragic accident. For swimmers and boaters alike keep an eye out for each other and use common sense when enjoying the lake we all share. Wildlife Support Very recently someone used the listserv to ask about how a young deer lying on the road could be helped. Coming upon an animal or bird in distress is not unusual. A couple of years ago a young injured hawk was seen wandering around properties near the narrows. A host of web sites offer advice on what to do if you come across an animal or bird in distress. Check out the following: Ottawa Valley Wild Bird Care Centre: http://www.wildbirdcarecentre.org Nature Canada: http://naturecanada.ca/about/faq/wildanimals/ Le Nichoir: http://lenichoir.org/bird-help-911/faq/ You can also call a regional wildlife officer at: 1 800 463 2191. By the way, the deer was OK and wandered off on his own - probably with Mom nearby giving him a nudge. Wakefield Community Centre Do you ever wonder what goes on at that large building at the entrance to Wakefield called the Wakefield Centre? Of the things going on do you wonder if any of them might be of interest? Well, check out their web site (http://www.wakefieldcentre.ca/programs/) - it's chock full of events and programs that should appeal to all of us here at the lake, regardless of our age. The home page has a link for subscribing to their Newsletter which can keep you abreast of upcoming happenings at the Centre.
