FEDERATION OF PARENTS' ASSOCIATIONS OF THE EUROPEAN
SCHOOLS IN LUXEMBOURG (F.A.P.E.E.E.L)
What is the FAPEEEL?
The FAPEEEL. is the Federation of Parents Associations of the
European Schools in Luxembourg (Fédération des Associations des
Parents d'Elèves des Ecole Européennes à Luxembourg). It is a
non-profit organisation registered under Luxembourg law.
It aims to ensure coordination of the approaches of the parents
associations of the two European Schools in Luxembourg (APEEEL1
for the school in Kirchberg and APEEEL2 for the school in Mamer)
and to provide secretariat support to and organize the extracurricular activities in cooperation with the two parents
associations1.
What are the APEEEL 1 and APEEEL 2?
The principal aim of the parents’ associations is to foster open
communication and provide a medium through which parents of
current students can develop their interest in the education of their
children, participate in and support the work of the school. This is
done by members representing parents in various school bodies,
including their Administrative Boards, and through other meetings
and communication activities, e.g. the FAPEEEL website (see also
below).
The Associations aim to be genuine partners in the decisions that
affect children and families and thereby enhance the quality of the
student and parent experience during the years they are
associated with the European Schools in Luxembourg.
What does that have to do with me?
Educational research has long shown that children do best when
families are involved in and understand the schools which their
children attend, and teachers/school administrations generally
value the views and contributions of parents.
All parents are represented by the Associations which are the only
such organisations officially recognised by the European School
statutes. The APEEEL1 and APEEEL2 are therefore the only valid
representatives of the parents as concerns the school and third
parties. The associations’ officials take part in various formal school
committees, including the Administrative Board (Conseil
d'Administration), the Education Council (Conseil d'Education), and
the Health & Safety Committee (Comité de Santé et Sécurité).
What else do you do for me?
The FAPEEEL and the Associations organise extracurricular
activities (activités périscolaires), help to manage the schools
canteens,
coordinate
language
exchanges
(échanges
linguistiques), helps to arrange school trips (voyages scolaires),
run the annual summer fair (fête de l'école), arrange book sales,
help supervise discos and other events - and collaborate with
related organisations, including the Transport Association (ATSEE),
the Library Association (Mots-de-Zaza) and the Study Centre
Association (APCPE).
A social fund provides financial assistance under certain conditions,
and different actions help raise money to donate equipment and
materials to the school. In recent years this has included buying
musical equipment, sponsoring school sports teams, purchasing
playground equipment, donating transport, and contributing to
other school projects.
The Associations provide advice to parents on all issues relating to
education, including category III fees (minerval), integration of
SEN children, learning support (rattrapage), SWALS, discipline,
bullying (harcèlement), choosing between subject options,
transfers between the nursery (maternelle), primary (primaire) and
secondary (secondaire) cycles, private tuition, administrative
attribution Lux.1/Lux.2.

How do you keep me informed?
The FAPEEEL coordinates the network of class delegates and
arranges various information evenings and other events and
activities.
In addition to running a website ( www.fapeeel.lu ), the FAPEEEL
produces regular information briefings for members by publishing
and distributing the school magazine "Ad Parentes" and operates a
permanent secretariat.
What does it cost to join?
The members of the FAPEEEL are the two APEEELs, whose
members are the parents of pupils attending the European School
in Kirchberg (APEEEL1) and Mamer (APEEEL2) respectively.
Membership of the APEEELs is inexpensive (the subscription is
currently EUR 50 per family per year). It gives the right to vote on
policy, and to stand for election to the APEEEL management
committees.
WE NEED AND APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT. To ensure your
registration is up to date, please complete the registration form for
the appropriate APEEEL and return it to the FAPEEEL secretariat.

Qu’est ce que la FAPEEEL ?
La FAPEEEL est la Fédération des associations des parents d'élèves
des écoles européennes à Luxembourg. C'est une association sans
but lucratif de droit luxembourgeois.
Elle est garante de la coordination des démarches des deux
associations de parents d’élèves à Luxembourg, APEEEL1 pour
l’école de Kirchberg, APEEEL2 pour l’école de Mamer. Elle gère en
collaboration avec les deux associations le secrétariat et la gestion
des activités périscolaires. Les statuts sont disponibles sur notre
site internet.
Que sont l’APEEEL1 et l’APEEEL2 ?
Elles visent principalement à promouvoir une communication
ouverte et à servir d'outil permettant aux parents d'élèves de
cultiver leur intérêt dans l'éducation de leurs enfants, d'apporter
leur concours et leur soutien au travail de l'école. Cela en
représentant les parents au sein de divers organes de l’école, dont
le conseil d’administration, et en communiquant par le biais du site
internet www. fapeeel.lu.
Les associations souhaitent être de véritables partenaires dans le
processus de prise de décisions ayant une incidence sur les
enfants et sur leur famille - et ainsi faire de leur période de
fréquentation des écoles européennes de Luxembourg une
expérience positive.
En quoi cela me concerne-t-i l ?
La recherche en sciences éducatives a démontré depuis longtemps
que les enfants obtiennent de meilleurs résultats lorsque leur
famille est impliquée et comprend le fonctionnement de l'école
qu'ils fréquentent. Par ailleurs, les enseignants et les
administrations scolaires apprécient les observations et les
contributions des parents.
Tous les parents sont représentés par les APEEE qui sont les
seules associations de ce type reconnues officiellement dans les
statuts de l'école européenne. APEEEL1 et APEEEL2 sont donc les
seuls représentants valables au regard de l'école et des tiers. Les
représentants siègent au sein des différents comités des écoles qui
comprennent le conseil d'administration, le conseil d'éducation et
le comité de santé et de sécurité.

Que faites-vous d'autre en mon nom ?
La F.A.P.E.E.EL et les associations apportent leur soutien aux
activités périscolaires, à la gestion de la cantine, à la coordination
des échanges linguistiques, à l'organisation de voyages scolaires,
des fêtes annuelles des écoles ou de la vente de livres. Elle aide à
la supervision des soirées dansantes et autres événements et
collabore avec d'autres associations apparentées telles que
l'association des transports scolaires de l'école européenne
(ATSEE), l'association qui gère la bibliothèque («Les Mots de
Zaza») ou l'association des parents du centre polyvalent de
l'enfance (APCPE).
Elle entretient une caisse de solidarité destinée à fournir une aide
financière sous certaines conditions et collecte des fonds afin de
faire des donations d'équipement et de matériel à l'école. Au cours
des dernières années, cela s'est concrétisé notamment par l'achat
de matériel pour l'enseignement de la musique, la subvention des
équipes de sport de l'école, l'acquisition d'équipements pour la
cour de récréation, l'offre de moyens de transport et la
contribution à d'autres projets de l'école.
Les APEEE offre des conseils aux parents sur tous les sujets
relatifs à l'éducation, tels que le minerval des élèves de
catégorie III, l'intégration des enfants à besoins spécifiques (SEN),
les dispositifs de rattrapage (LS), l'accueil des élèves sans section
linguistique (SWALS), la discipline, le harcèlement, le choix des
options, le passage de la maternelle au primaire et du primaire au
secondaire, les cours privés ou la carte scolaire (inscription à
Lux. 1 ou à Lux. 2).
Comment me maintenez-vous informé(e) ?
La FAPEEEL coordonne le réseau des délégués de classe et
organise des soirées d'information ainsi que divers événements et
activités. En plus de son site web (www.fapeeel.lu), la FAPEEEL
informe régulièrement ses adhérents en publiant et en diffusant la
revue Ad Parentes et en assurant un secrétariat permanent.
Combien coûte l'adhésion ?
Les membres de la FAPEEEL sont les deux associations APEEEL1 et
APEEEL2 dont les adhérents sont les parents des élèves des écoles
européennes de Kirchberg et Mamer-Bertrange.
La cotisation aux APEEEL est d'un montant modique (actuellement
50 EUR par an et par famille). Adhérer donne le droit de se
prononcer sur les choix de l'association et de se présenter à
l'élection du comité de gestion.
VOTRE SOUTIEN EST NECESSAIRE ET APPRECIE. Afin de vous
assurer que votre cotisation est à jour, veuillez remplir le
formulaire d'adhésion inclus dans ce numéro et le renvoyer au
secrétariat de la FAPEEEL.

been collected from July to October 2013. Good luck to them all!

Denmark
62 bacheliers are now in the UK (UK includes Scotland and Wales), representing 33% of the returned questionnaires.
It is therefore not a surprise that the main language used for the studies is English. Particularly as most students
following a course in The Netherlands use English too.
Our students are “Europeantrotters”, most of them do not go back to their home country to study but go abroad.
A good way to keep exploring and experiencing new cultures. We wish them well.

“Users of the ATSEE buses and navettes will not have failed to notice that there have been some
important delays in the mornings and afternoons since the start of term for some bus lines. This brief
note tries to summarise what has been done to identify the reasons and, where possible, indicates
the solutions which have been implemented. Unfortunately, very few of these can be implemented
directly by ATSEE or the school administration”.

Preparing for ZINAL
Like previous years, P5 pupils of the European Schools
Luxemburg I and II will be going on the annual ski classes in
Switzerland from 10th to 18th December, in Zinal, Val
d’Anniviers.
In anticipation of the upcoming ski season, and in particular,
the P5 class trip to Zinal, the FAPEEEL organises on 16th
November, in Lux 1*, the market for buying and selling second-hand skiing equipment and clothing.
We hope parents from Lux 1 and Lux 2 will make good bargains!

Le FAPEEEL organise le marché pour la vente et l’achat d’équipements et de vêtements de ski de
deuxième-main le 16 novembre, à Lux 1*. Nous espérons que les parents Lux1 et Lux 2 pourront
faire de bonnes affaires en vue du voyage de élèves P5 à Zinal du 10 au 18 décembre !
Voici quelques informations collectées lors de la soirée d’information du 7 octobre.
Santé et soins
Il y a 4 infirmiers, dès le départ de Luxembourg, puisque ce sont des infirmiers du
Luxembourg, expérimentés et volontaires depuis des années. A l’hôtel, un médecin viendra faire une
permanence deux fois une heure par jour.
Le CPAN (Mondial assurance) est l'assurance souscrite par l'école. Celle-ci prend en charge tous les
soins du blessé, le transfert en taxi d'un parent vers l'aéroport, le voyage en avion de ce parent
vers Genève ainsi que la nuit à l'hôtel et le rapatriement du blessé vers l'hôpital le plus proche.
L'école prend une assurance supplémentaire pour couvrir l'enfant d'un handicap éventuel après cet
accident.
Cours de ski
Sur les pistes et à la cafétéria des pistes, seront de permanence un animateur pour s'occuper des
enfants fatigués ou qui ont un bobo ou froid. Les infirmiers sont aussi là-haut, et joignables par radio.
Les cours sont de 2h30 par jour, par groupe de 10 (débutants) ou 14/16 (non débutants. Ce sont
des groupes de niveau, et totalement mixtes (Lux I/II et linguistiques).
Visites prévues d'une centrale électrique, d'une ferme, du village (traditionnel, avec beaucoup de
sculpteures en bois), la boom, les soirées organisées par les animateurs. Les animateurs sont 10
belges, d'une école d'animateurs de la région. Sont à confirmer: piscine et patinoire.
Les chambres
Les chambres sont à deux places, avec chacune une salle de douche.
Les enfants trouveront leur valise (étiquetée) dans le couloir de leur chambre à
l'arrivée (apportées par les employés de l’hôtel).
Le départ
Le départ sera à 9h. Dans le hall de gare, les enfants seront regroupés par
classe, informés au préalable par un "plan " des groupes en gare. Ils monteront
dans le train et ensuite, les parents pourront aller sur les quais pour assister au
départ (et faire un dernier bisou).

Announcing MEC Bruxelles 2014
The Model European Council / Parliament (MECP) is a political simulation
organised by the European Schools. Selected students from each schools
take on roles as politicians from the 28 member states of the EU, and take
part in a 3 day run of council and plenary sessions.
MEC 2014 will be held from March 26-28 in Brussels, hosted by
Eurocontrol organised by EEBrussels 1. This will be a Council of Ministers
from the 28 countries and Commission.
Students of all nationalities make up the respective delegations. This year,
EELux 1 delegation will represent Spain and send a team of 10 journalists.
EELux2 will represent Cyprus and Denmark.
Le MEC est une simulation politique organisée par les écoles
européennes. Les étudiants sélectionnés de chacune des 13 écoles
assument des rôles de responsables politiques des 28 Etats membres de
l'UE, et prennent part à 3 jours de conseil et de séances plénières.
MEC 2014 organisé par EEBruxelles1 se tiendra du 26 au 28 Mars 2014 à Eurocontrol. Ce sera un Conseil des
ministres des 28 pays et la Commission.
Les étudiants de toutes nationalités composent les délégations respectives. Cette année EELux 1 représentera
l’Espagne, et une équipe de 10 journalistes. EELux2 Chypre et le Danemark.
Announcing European Schools Science Symposium 2014

The European Schools Science Symposium 2014 will be held in Varese, from 30 March to 2 April. The
competition is open to students of the European Schools years S2 to S7 inclusive. Pupils interested in taking
part should contact their science teachers as soon as possible. This project requires dedication, the
investigation involves many hours of practical work in the students' own time. The students also have to be
prepared to pay for their travel and accommodation to Varese. The number of students taking part is limited per
school. Luxembourg School won best entry twice in the history of the competition.
Individuals or groups of students, guided by a teacher-mentor, are encouraged to explore
an area of scientific interest of their choice, not normally covered by the European
Schools’ science syllabus. Projects fall broadly into 2 types:
Scientific Investigations
Engineering/Design projects
The projects will be showcased during the symposium and judged by teachers and subject
experts. Prizes will be awarded for the best entries. Juniors and seniors will be judged
separately.
The overall winning project in the senior category will represent the European Schools at
the European Union Contest for Young Scientists later in the year. Make Science !
Le ESSS 2014 se tiendra du 30 mars au 2 avril 2014 à Varèse. La compétition est ouverte aux élèves de
Secondaire S2 à S7. Les élèves intéressés peuvent dès à présent se mettre en contact avec leurs
professeurs de science. Ce projet réclame du temps et de l’engagement de la part de l’élève. Les frais de
voyages et de séjour sont aussi à prendre en considération. Le nombre de places par école est limité.
L’EELux a remporté deux fois le premier prix.
En individuel ou en groupe, les élèves accompagnés par un professeur, explorent un sujet scientifique de leur
choix, non couvert par le programme des écoles européennes. En général, deux catégories se distinguent, la
recherche scientifique et l’ingénierie/design.
Les projets sont présentés lors de la compétition et jugés par un jury. Des prix sont attribués aux meilleures
propositions juniors et seniors. Le vainqueur du projet Senior représentera les écoles européennes au Concours
des jeunes scientifiques de l’Union Européenne plus tard dans l’année. A vos méninges !

Stages en entreprise
Le 26 septembre, les élèves ayant effectué un stage en enterprise se sont vus remettre leur certificat par leurs
tuteurs, professeurs volontaires les ayant accompagnés dans ce projet. Destiné aux élèves S5 et S6 le stage
en entreprise est intégré dans le programme pédagogique des écoles. Il permet aux élèves de faire leur
première incursion dans le monde du travail.

On 26 September, both in Lux1 and Lux2 schools, pupils that had taken part in the Work experience program
received their certificate from their tutors.
Work experience is part of the schools’ educational program where S5 and S6 students experience the world
of work, often for the first time. It is a short-term placement with employers, to provide insights into the industry,
and the workplace in which they are located. It has enormous benefits both for students and parents.
Benefits for students:
• improve understanding of the work environment
and employers’expectations
• provide an opportunity to explore possible career
options
• increase self understanding, maturity,
independence and self confidence,
• increase motivation to continue study and/or
undertake further training
• increase understanding of the relevance of the
school curriculum
in relation to preparing young people for work
• increase understanding of recruitment practices in
the workplace
• enhance opportunities for part-time and casual
employment.
• provide the opportunity to include the employer’s
evaluation in job and course applications
• provide the opportunity to develop work-related
competencies and to try out a workplace.
Benefits for parents:
• An opportunity to discuss with their child the topic
of work, including their own previous and current
experiences in the workplace
• provide networking opportunities for their child
when they commence organising their placement
• enable positive interactions between parents and
school staff
• provide the opportunity for families to be involved
in discussions relating to pathways for their child so
that they are able to choose from a range of post
bac education and training options.
All students are aware that they are representing their school while on work experience and must continue to
observe school policies and codes of conduct.
Tutoring
Tutors are volunteer teachers, chosen by the pupils themselves to guide them in the
process of finding a stage and organising their time there. They also ensure that
administrative procedures are followed up to the end with the writing of a stage
report. They visit the pupils on their stage premises and are their referee in case of
problems.

experience.

EELux2 – Frankfurt European Schools Joint Concert

On 3 October, as Germany was celebrating its national day, EELux 2 welcomed Frankfurt’s European School’s
orchestra and choir for 3 joint Concerts. The initiative, triggered by a pupil that had visited Lux2 school while on a
language exchange, was welcomed by Paul Rhodes, music teacher and all was organised for the exchange to
happen.
Throughout the Thursday morning the Frankfurt and EELux2 school orchestras joined forces in a workshop
under the direction of M. Meunier. The challenge was to learn a completely new piece “from scratch” and
perform it together. In the evening, singers and musicians performed brilliantly in front of a FULL house!
Frankfurt’s Music director, Clemens Mohr, has developed a strong group of 70 pupils both for the choir and the
orchestra. They regularly visit other European schools to reinforce their cohesion as performers and present their
repertoire, this year a medley of the “Oliver” musical’s songs. A fantastic way to boost self-esteem for the pupils
as nothing quite compares
to performing live music in
front of an audience!

concerts already planned
by music teachers.

The European Day of Languages has been celebrated every year since 2001 on 26
September, as an initiative of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
There are between 6000 and 7000 languages in the world spoken by 7 billion people
divided into 189 independent states.
English is the most widely spoken language in the world. It is estimated that there are about 1.8 billion
speakers. Chinese is second with 1.35 billion (mainly native) speakers. Hindi: 650 million speakers; Spanish:
495 million speakers.
The 24 official languages of the EU institutions are Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English,
Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish,
Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish and Swedish.
Bilingualism brings with it many benefits: it makes the learning of additional languages easier, enhances the
thinking process and fosters contacts with other people and their cultures.
Language learning and linguistic diversity are among the priorities of Erasmus+, the new EU programme for
education, training and sport for 2014-20.
EU language policies aim to protect linguistic diversity and to promote knowledge of languages for reasons of
cultural identity, social integration and because multilingual citizens are better placed to take advantage of
education and job opportunities in the Single Market.

Carrefour des langues
Le soleil brillait dans le ciel lundi 23
septembre dernier. Sur nos vêtements
aussi, le jaune était à l’honneur. Avezvous vu fleurir ce jour-là des autocollants
jaunes « Carrefour des langues » sur les
habits des élèves et de certains professeurs ? La
section francophone a organisé un petit jeu visant à
mettre à l’honneur les langues Tchèque, Slovène,
Slovaque, Hongroise et Roumaine. Lors des pauses,
les élèves de Mesdames Badet, Perrin et Schneider
se sont promenés avec des paniers remplis de
petites phrases françaises à dire dans les langues
des SWALS. Tout le monde a donc pu s’exercer dans
ces langues et a gagné le droit de porter l’autocollant
toute la journée, et si possible toute la semaine.
Merci à tout le monde de s’être prêté au jeu avec un
tel enthousiasme ! Bravo à Lilla, Marton, Beata, Livia

Durante la settimana dedicata alle lingue
straniere, la sezione italiana ha accolto
nelle proprie classi stranieri provenienti
dalle piu’ disparate nazionalità.
Scopo: permettere un contatto rapido ma
efficace con la lingua e la cultura italiana, attraverso
l’ascolto di passi tratti dalla “Divina Commedia”,
abilmente recitati a memoria dagli allievi della III A
(ITA).
Il tutto è avvenuto in un contesto semplice, ma
particolarmente accogliente: lo scorrere delle
immagini dei piu’ singolari paesaggi toscani e dei
piu’ famosi monumenti italiani, l’accompagnamento
della musica, e la degustazione della gastronomia
italiana hanno reso l’incontro indimenticabile.

Hungarian (magyar nyelv) is a Uralic
language.
It is the most widely spoken nonIndo-European language in Europe (approximately 14
million native speakers). The Hungarian name for the
language is “magyar” [ˈmɒɟɒr].
Hungarian is a member of the FinnoUgric (Uralic) language family, in the
Ugric branch with the Mansi (Vogul) and Khanty
(Ostyak) languages of western Siberia.
The Hungarian language was
originally written in Old Hungarian
runes. When Stephen I of Hungary

established the Kingdom of Hungary in the year
1000, the old system was gradually discarded in
favour of the Latin alphabet. Modern Hungarian is
written using an expanded Latin
alphabet, and has a phonetic
orthography, i.e. pronunciation can
generally be predicted from the written language.

Les élèves d’espagnol ont achevé
deux projets ayant pour but de
réfléchir sur l’histoire des langues
pour constater que tout au long de
l’histoire il y a eu un échange entre elles. De ce fait,
les langues deviendraient un lien entre les peuples.
Les élèves de 4S LIII et 6S LIV en partant du latin
comme langue « mère » ont pu constater les
correspondances entre diverses langues, même
celles qui ne sont pas d’origine latine.
Ils ont fait des affiches symboliques en forme de
fleur: au centre, le mot latin ; un pétale pour chacune
des langues romanes les plus répandues ;
finalement, un pétale dans une autre couleur pour
ces mots avec la même racine, mais qui se trouvent
dans d’autres familles linguistiques.
Les élèves de 7S LIII voulaient approfondir les
différentes langues qui ont contribué à façonner
l’espagnol, en soulignant toujours ce facteur
d’échange et d’enrichissement entre les langues.
Pour ce faire, les étudiants ont cherché des mots
espagnols provenant de l’arabe, du grec, de
l’allemand et des langues précolombiennes.

EELux1 Grammatiklabb
Tomas Riad’s visit to the Swedish section
On Monday 14th of October, the Swedish students at the
European school had the fantastic opportunity of meeting
Tomas Riad, Swedish linguist and Professor of
Scandinavian Languages at Stockholm University. Since
2011 Mr. Riad is also one of the 18 members of the
Swedish Academy.
Mr.Riad first held a short lecture with some grammatical
brainteasers typically found in the Swedish language. After
the introduction, the students were asked to participate in a
grammar workshop. The students were asked, guided by
their own linguistic intuition, to solve some grammatical
problems and come up with a probable solution or rule
governing that specific aspect of the language. Using their
analytical skills, the students were soon engaged in the different puzzling grammatical dilemmas.

After the workshop, it was time for a question and answer session about Mr Riad’s work in the Academy. The
students’ questions gave rise to an exciting discussion about the work of the Swedish Academy, the Nobel Prize
and how the recipient is elected.

Moi par Toi Exhibition
EELux1
Many of you will remember the striking
images of the Moi par Toi pictures displayed
in EELux1 staircase for the 60th anniversary
celebrations last April. These pictures are
now on display in Luxembourg City, at the
Grund, Tunnel du Saint Esprit until January
2014.

Des jeunes de 16 à 18 ans parlent d’eux-mêmes,
de leurs racines, de leurs goûts, de leurs valeurs,
de leurs peurs, de leurs attentes…
Ils sont 22 élèves de l’Ecole européenne de
Luxembourg I. Ils sont suédois, polonais,
allemands, néerlandais, estoniens, espagnols,
anglais, irlandais et lituaniens. Et ils ont
interviewé 12 élèves de la section francophone.
De ces rencontres sont nés ces portraits au plus
près de la parole échangée. Ils nous offrent, à
travers ces regards croisés, façonnés par des
cultures et des langues d’une grande diversité,
une idée de ce que pourrait être l’Europe de
demain.
Le photographe Giovanni Ambrosio a réalisé les photos de ces jeunes. Souvent les auteurs des portraits ont
choisi de figurer à leurs côtés.
Les affiches ont été conçues par les élèves et le graphisme a été réalisé par le photographe.

Malawi
EDUCATION – giving a helping hand, not a handout
Imagine a child being unable to attend school
because they have no paper, pencil, pens, bag,
shoes, clothes, textbooks, workbooks,
calculators, blackboards, chalk, desks, chairs,
classrooms… unfortunately, this is still common
in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the
world.
The July 2013 visit by students from the two
European Schools in Luxembourg to the
Paratroop Battalion Community School at Senga
Bay, Salima District, Malawi was an opportunity
for the participants to experience at first hand
some of the issues facing communities in subSaharan Africa, to witness the dedication of
helpers committed to improving their situation,
and to provide a small amount of direct
assistance to one school. It was a life-changing
experience.
Imaginez qu’un enfant ne puisse pas se rendre à
l’école, qu’il n’ait ni papier, crayon, sac,
chaussures, vêtements, cahier, calculatrice,
tableau noir, bureau, chaises ou salles de
classe… C’est encore très souvent le cas au
Malawi, un des pays les plus pauvres de la
planète.
Juillet 2013, des étudiants des deux écoles
européennes de Luxembourg ont rendu visite à
l’école Paratroop Battalion Community School à
Senga Bay, Salima District au Malawi. Ils ont pu
vivre en direct la réalité des communautés de ce
pays, être témoin du dévouement des
volontaires les aidant à surmonter les difficultés.
Ils ont pu aussi ajouter une pierre à l’édifice en
travaillant pour une école. Une expérience qui
change la vie.
William’s Malawi Trip (Duke of Edinburgh, Mérite Jeunesse report*)
The Malawi trip was full of adventures and mishaps (…).
After an eventful trip the first night in Lilongwe turned out problematic as 3 of our luggage pieces never arrived. It
wasn't going to matter too much until we realised that because of those missing bags we had tents and tent
poles missing. We had to squeeze a little tighter in the remaining tents and improvise a tent hanging system that
still aloud us to breathe.
We also got to change 2000$ into local currency to buy
food and equipment necessary for the trip. Exchanging
money on the black market was something new for me.
Word of mouth soon reached a dealer who arrived on
campsite with a big black Mercedes with tinted
windows. The bargaining was done amicably but when
all the money was exchanged and counted we then
suddenly realised how many bank notes of the local
currency, the kwacha, we had, it filled up a whole sports
bag! It felt as if we had just robbed a bank. The money
was then split amongst all of us for security purposes
but still left big bulges in our pockets!
Having seen a few local butchers along the roads, we decided that our stomachs would not be able to cope with
the extremely low hygiene requirements set by the locals and therefore we all decided that meat was OUT. I am
a meat lover and that decision was not to my liking so I got the ingenious idea of buying 4 live chickens on the
way to our next destination.(…) The result was a sheer delight and the only meat we were going to have in over
a week!

Part of this trip was to help out in the village’s local school.
We made some repairs to the playground, built a fence to
stop cars from driving through the school yard and injuring
children and a tuck shop for the local ladies to be able to
sell food from behind a counter instead of being in the dirt
beside the road.
It was not easy work in the heat of the African sun but it
was worth it. The best part was on the last day of our

project phase where we had a football game against the local U15 team. And although we were more than twice
their size they beat us fare and square. The audience was huge and even included British soldiers deployed by
the UN, making the humiliation even bigger.
On our way to Nyika Plateau which is at 2800 meters altitude after our high-tech bus broke down a few times in
the middle of nowhere our hiking phase of the trip could begin.
Unfortunately my walking boots gave up after only a day and once
several options failed to save them I donated what was left to local
admirers and eventually finished my trip walking in flip flops. At least the
weather was permitting such fantasy!
The hike was very tiring at such an altitude and on the terrain we
walked on, as it was on animal paths through the grassland of the
national parks. It was also made harder by seeing all the other
participants carry only light day bags and have porters carry their heavy
hiking bags as only 3 of us were doing our Duke of Edinburgh awards
and thus had to carry the hiking bag the whole distance.
The trip back home from Lilongue was a lot easier as we were half
starved and very tired and thus managed to sleep through all the way
back to Luxembourg only having to sleep walk our way through the 4
transit Airports.
All in all, the trip was quite an interesting and challenging experience I
have to thank all my sponsors for. I have learnt a lot of things from
Malawi’s norms, values and lifestyle and I have experienced what it is
like camping in Africa’s untouched nature. Having done some manual
work in the African heat defiantly hardened me as well but it made me
enjoy philanthropic work all the more seeing how thankful and happy
the local people were with our work! Thank you to all of you.

Actions sans frontières
Actions Without Borders / Aktionen ohne Grenzen
1983-2013: 30 years already!
Actions Sans Frontières - Actions Without Borders of the European Schools of Luxembourg is a multicultural
association involving teachers, students, parents and staff of Lux I and Lux II schools. Its key objective is to raise
awareness in our pupils about the situation of children in disadvantaged environments and raise money for
projects to help them. (www.euroschool.lu/asf).
The school year 2012/2013 was full of challenges: a new name, a new logo and a second school. Nevertheless,
we were able to work with both school communities and raise an important amount of money.
In November, our first event of the school year was original and unusual. Together with the NGO “Regards
d’enfants d’Éthiopie” and the participation of the Director, students, parents and teachers, we organised a
beautiful Ethiopian fashion show in Lux I. Later, our Christmas Fair was a huge success and we raised a record
amount of 29.278 €. The new surroundings in Lux II, spacious and airy, offered an ideal venue for promoting a
good cause.

The Sponsored Sports Day on April 27 at Lux I was again a popular activity for children of the Maternelle and
Primary Schools. Next year this event will take place at Luxembourg II, in Mamer.
Pupils from the secondary years 1, 2 and 3 of Lux I and Lux II had a lot of fun in the discos organised by the
Pupils’ Committee with the help of teachers, parents and ASF.

This year’s School Fête in Lux I celebrating the 60 anniversary of the European Schools attracted a lot of
visitors; we took part selling new T-shirts and a delicious fruit salad in the Maternelle.
During the whole school year 2012/2013 ASF raised 39 230 € which were distributed to long and short term
projects as specified in the following pages.
ASF operates thanks to the goodwill of everyone. We always need help and new members in both schools. If
you are interested in the problems of developing countries and if you are willing to give a little of your time,
please come and join us. If you have ideas, projects, actions, please contact us.

Actions sans frontière organises its annual Christmas Market in EELux1 cantine this year. From 10h30
to 16h30. Come for early Christmas shopping, sharing a good time with friends, listen to music,
discover traditional dances and of course taste lovely food.
The APEEEL1 will keep a Second-Hand international book stand there. Your donations of books in all
languages and for all ages are most welcome. You can drop the books at the Primary’s concierge
desk. On the day, come and give us a visit to get your books for the long winter days!
