Cathy Levy Dance Producer | Productrice de la Danse www.nac-cna.ca To embrace Dance today means to be open to where the artists’ unique voices are taking you, to the propositions or challenges they present. This is what makes the art form so bold and so beautiful: whether being swept up in the sheer romanticism and drama of The Kirov’s La Bayadère; the rhythmic wonder of Savion Glover’s tapping extravaganza; Dave St-Pierre’s raucous “in your face” romp; or Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s probing humanity with Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Dance reaches our core and deepens the human experience. At the NAC we can meet the world through these performances – from China to South Africa, from the UK to the United States. It is all Dance: it is authored by choreographers, it is performed by sublimely trained dancers, and it is communicated through the insightful marriage of movement and other art forms. So let your mind expand, let your imagination be nourished… Let the Dance inspire. As bold as the pioneers of decades ago – when artists such as Isadora Duncan and Merce Cunningham shocked their audiences – choreographers today continue to push the envelope in expressing their originality. Dance-theatre, “non-dance”, culture-specific and street dance have all fed into how we view Dance on stage in the 21st century. But the question still remains – what is dance? – and the answer is as broad as the artistic minds whose creativity unfolds in the studio. Still, he did have a point. Although there have always been “star” choreographers – Ashton and his contemporary George Balanchine were notable 20th-century examples – the fruits of their craft, unlike those say of a sculptor or novelist, depend on others for their ultimate fulfillment. Choreography as we experience it, even choreography of the most astringently abstract and conceptual kind, is a living art of muscle and bone, heart and mind. Choreography only comes alive in a moving, thinking body and, because audiences tend more naturally to identify emotionally with the dancer they see than with the choreography as a independent entity, it is the dancer who often takes the lion’s share of the glory. Yet the relationship of choreographer and dancer – of what we sometimes too simplistically demarcate as creator and performer – is variable, complex and continually fascinating. Few choreographers, for example, compose a work entirely in their head or in notated form on paper. Even those who arrive in the rehearsal studio with a detailed choreographic plan inevitably find themselves making subtle adjustments as they teach the work to the dancers. More commonly a choreographer in the process of creation will draw inspiration from the dancers. From an onlooker’s viewpoint it might seem that the dancers’ creative contribution in such cases is as significant as the choreographer’s. Indeed, it is not untypical nowadays for choreographers to acknowledge this publicly by listing the dancers as “collaborators,” “co-creators” or “interpreters.” But just as choreographers depend on dancers for the realization of their ideas, dancers also depend on choreographers to shape their bodies and deploy them in space in ways that communicate something to an audience. It has often been noted that a great dancer, through the sheer force of his or her persona, can make indifferent choreography look interesting. Equally, however, there is choreography that is so resiliently well formed that, even if it cannot make an inferior dancer look great, it can at least make her look interesting. A season as aesthetically and culturally diverse as the one about to unfold on the stages of the National Arts Centre provides an ideal opportunity to ponder the amorphous role of the dancer – as creator, performer and interpreter. Clearly there is a fundamental distinction between a dancer performing someone else’s choreography and a masterly solo performer, such as the great American tap artist Savion Glover or Canada’s Tedd Robinson, dancing his own work. In the latter case we are drawn, often in extraordinarily intimate ways, into the private realms of charismatic individuals. Think for a moment about the great Russian ballerina Diana Vishneva who this season will dance the role of the tragic heroine Nikiya in the Kirov Ballet’s full-length Oriental spectacle, La Bayadère. None of us saw Ekaterina Vazem dance Nikiya in Marius Petipa’s 1877 original although we can assume, in keeping with the traditions of the time, that he choreographed the role to exploit Vazem’s virtuosity to its fullest. Even the choreographic material passed down to Vishneva’s generation has been modified over the years. Her role then becomes primarily that of an interpreter, finding emotional relevance in what, it must be conceded, is a sometimes exotically torrid plot while simultaneously giving us the visceral thrill of watching Russian classical dancing at the most exalted level. Vishneva is, of course, a very special dancer, idolized by her fans as a glamorous and beautiful woman, but her artistic challenge is to become Nikiya. Diana Vishneva est, bien entendu, une danseuse extraordinaire, une star d’une grande beauté idolâtrée par ses admirateurs; mais son défi demeure d’incarner Nikiya. a b Yet this is the same Diana Vishneva who two years ago invited American modern-dance choreographic wise guy/illusionist Moses Pendleton – whose company, MOMIX, performs Botanica in March – to create a work for her own touring program, “Beauty in Motion.” Here Vishneva, bravely exploring unfamiliar movement territory, enjoyed what almost all dancers love most, working with a choreographer in such an intense creative collaboration that, to paraphrase Yeats, in the resulting work it is almost impossible to distinguish the dancer from the dance. Choreographers are understandably drawn to dancers who demonstrate a special gift for interpreting their movement ideas. Without in any way diminishing Edouard Lock’s seminal role in La La La Human Steps, few would deny the special place of Louise Lecavalier as his inspirational muse in helping define the company’s public image during its formative years. In her post-La La La career, Lecavalier remains an inspirational dancer, sufficient to attract the collaborative involvement of as demanding a choreographer as Britain’s Nigel Charnock. Dancers also evolve through the trajectory of a performing career. Although the famous French ballerina Sylvie Guillem was always inclined to cut her own path, few would have suspected that she would move on from ballet to embrace contemporary, avant-garde dance with such confident relish – defying and subverting, much as has Baryshnikov, the public’s preconception of what befits a former classical ballet superstar. An audience’s understandable focus on individual dancers should not lead us to overlook the fact that the relationship of a choreographer with a group of dancers can follow an analogous dynamic, and with similarly applicable variables. When the Kirov’s legendary female corps dances Petipa the sublime effect it achieves comes from a profound understanding of its poetic importance in the overall structure of a ballet. It is far more than a technical marvel of coordinated movement, it is an act of creative imagination and belief, breathing new life into what could otherwise seem rigidly archaic. 6 A world of dance in Ottawa | Unique au monde, la danse à Ottawa a. Louise Lecavalier in/dans Children • Photo : M. Chiarradia b. Diana Vishneva, Mariinsky Ballet (The Kirov/Le Kirov) • Photo : Valentin Baranovsky we learn something intensely personal about the creator/performer. Most dancers however fall into the first category, striving to embody and communicate whatever a choreographer has given them; but even here there are distinctions in the exact nature of their role. Dancers in companies that are strongly identified with the work of particular choreographers – Random Dance and Wayne McGregor or Les Ballets C. de la B. and Alain Platel are good examples from the new NAC dance season – can also function collectively as creative collaborators. Most of today’s big classical ballet companies have wide ranging repertoires and therefore seek the most stylistically versatile dancers. Choreographer-driven troupes tend to attract dancers in sympathy with their particular aesthetics. While individuals may still shine within the group, the company as a whole functions as a vehicle of collective expression, inspired by but also inspiring the choreographic genius who gives it motive purpose. This said, it may seem ironic that for all their centrality to the creative process and to its realization on stage, even the finest dancers come and go whereas great choreography has the potential to live on for centuries. It’s the same with all the performing arts. But audiences come and go too and each new generation can only experience the creative vision of a choreographer, whether past or present, through the imaginative act of a living dancer. Films and videos may provide us with a diluted impression of what other dancers at another time forged in the moment of their performance but choreography can only fully be experienced in that miraculous, fleeting moment when a dancer makes it vibrantly alive. Each ballet is the distinct creation of a brilliant artistic imagination, yet they all express a common contemporary sensibility through intense musicality and stunning physicality. This diverse program offers a sweeping look at the development of contemporary ballet vocabulary, featuring the pioneering early work Sérénade by George Balanchine, a recreation of the exquisite 24 Preludes by Chopin by “Queen of the Avant-Garde” Marie Chouinard, and the dynamic Emergence, a new commission by Vancouver’s visionary Crystal Pite. “It’s white-knuckle stuff that unequivocally disputes dance’s often evidentially disputable claim to be the most fundamental and relevant of performed arts. Inspired by the audacious exploits of 18th century spy and transvestite, Le Chevalier d’Éon, this exciting new work draws from the backgrounds of the artists, as well as from the ancient Kabuki technique of Onnagata, in which male actors stylishly portray female roles. Poetic lighting, gorgeous gender-bending costumes by late fashion designer Alexander McQueen, and stirring performances combine in a extraordinary spectacle that has garnered illustrious international praise since its premiere in London in 2009. Saturday, February 5, 2011 Le samedi 5 février 2011 Southam Hall, 8 p.m. Salle Southam, 20 h Virtuoso tap dancer Savion Glover is the undisputed king of the hoofers with what the New York Times calls his “magical, unstoppable feet.” Since first exploding onto the global dance scene in the Broadway smash Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk! Glover has tapped his way into dance legend with his invention, clarity, speed and unique steps – using tap as sound, and sound as dance to brilliantly convey his belief that tap is a vital, contemporary form. In this new exploration, Glover strips the art form to its essence to explore the passion of flamenco, accompanied by dancers Marshall Davis Jr. and Cartier Williams, flamenco artist La Conja, and onstage musicians (double bass, percussionist and guitarist). Together these incredibly versatile artists embrace the enduring vitality of an ancient art and pay tribute to its percussive energy through a montage of sounds and intricate time passages of tap. “The evening demonstrates his sincerity and curiosity; he is still searching for ways not merely to showcase tap, but to strip it to its essence... Mr. Glover has found a potent meeting point between his unadorned, musical approach to tap and flamenco’s raw passion.” Gia Kourlas, The New York Times March 5, 2009 « La soirée atteste de sa sincérité et de sa curiosité : il cherche sans relâche de nouvelles façons, non pas de mettre les claquettes en évidence, mais d’en dégager l’essence même (...) In a romantic and technically challenging new work to mark the 30th anniversary of the company, Lock reunites with award-winning British composer Gavin Bryars (Amjad), and puts ballet technique at the service of a narrative deconstructed from two iconic operas. Two tragic and cherished love stories become one seamless ode through the intricacy of dance timed to micro moments, beckoning the audience to fuse the familiar with the new to create unpredictable stories. “As of today, Amjad will be synonymous with Art – with a capital A. Nine exquisitely skilled dancers perform on an empty stage with only basic lighting and a soundtrack born of the creative process – using their bodies as the raw material to create a living art to explore themes of hysteria and madness, the beauty of the malformed, and the emotional power of the misshapen. Small mouth quivers, teeth chattering, silly walks – the movement is restless, penetrating the space between the synchronization of traditional choreography and the uncontrolled gestures of the unconscious in a piece that permeates the essence of humanity. “This could be the best production of the season. Nine contorted bodies conjure up a new, moving world through dance. Ultimately, Out of Context lets you wander around for more than an hour in an intimate, hysterical world and with its austerity of image and content it succeeds in knocking us off our feet.” Now working with her own company, Lecavalier performs in a critically-acclaimed program of duets. Children, choreographed by Britain’s brilliantly irreverent Nigel Charnock and danced with Patrick Lamothe, exploits the extremes inherent in the emotional universe of the child as two people are plunged into the agony and ecstasy of trying to stay together for the sake of their family. The couple joins and separates, breaking apart and reeling through space, charged by the tensions of distance and proximity, surrender and resistance, strength and weakness. In A Few Minutes of Lock, Lecavalier, dancing with Elijah Brown and Patrick Lamothe, revisits three duets from her years with Edouard’s company, reworking the uniquely passionate approach to the intimate duet form the two developed. Under the charismatic leadership of Benoit-Swan Pouffer, and thanks to the exquisite skill and individual styles of its dancers, Cedar Lake has quickly become known in America for innovation and excellence in contemporary dance. Exploiting the company’s talents, Cherkaoui summons his blend of expressive movement, music and theatre to explore the fundamental duality of self, inspired by (and invoking) brain scientist Jill Bolte Taylor’s eerie memoir of suffering a stroke. To an original score by Polish composer Szymon Brzóska recorded by the Mosaic String Quartet, Orbo Novo (New World) lives up to its meaning, mapping a new emotional world as the dancers create a memorable portrait of the tensions between the rational and sensual mind, between control and the loss of it, and between solitude and society. “Orbo Novo... an achingly beautiful impression of the elegance and freedom that bodies – and brain cells – can produce when in perfect alignment with one another.” Tresca Weinstein, Dance Magazine « Orbo Novo (...) » Tresca Weinstein, Dance Magazine 24 A world of dance in Ottawa | Unique au monde, la danse à Ottawa c The Cold Dagger, BeijingDance | LDTX • Photo : Zhang He Ping “The company doesn’t merely dance splendidly, it dances ferociously.” Théâtre, 19 h 30 Born of an exciting period of cultural change in China, BeijingDance | LDTX has made its mark at the forefront of Chinese dance and earned international kudos for a unique lexicon integrating Chinese culture with influences from elsewhere. In the explosive Cold Dagger the 14 dancers are life-sized pieces in an intricate match of go, the traditional Chinese weigi game. David Diamond’s strident cello music underscores the dramatic tension evoked by dance that incorporates dynamic martial arts moves yet resolves itself in stillness and a fluid lyricism. All River Red interprets Stravinsky’s iconic Rite of Spring as symbolic of the vital struggle in China to develop contemporary dance. Rising choreographic star Sang Jijia – a Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative artist under the mentorship of famed choreographer William Forsythe – examines the passage of time in a stream of memories in a new piece set to original music by Dickson Dee. Treating the public performance space as the natural evolution of the private salon, Robinson premieres a brand new solo work plus excerpts from his Chalmer’s Award-winning Rokudo and the acclaimed Relic, interspersed with episodes of new creation inspired by Schumann’s “Dichterliebe” song cycle and performed by an ensemble of five dancers with live musical and vocal accompaniment. In R3, Robinson integrates a 1960s aesthetic into the mix, and the audience and performers participate in an intimate exchange, engendering an unpredictable narrative voyage. In this first installment of a triptych on humanity, love, life and death, 14 dancer/actors (a mix of professional and amateur performers) seethe and vault through 26 scenes of desolation, violence, tenderness and prejudice, in a symbiosis of dance, theatre, text, and video set to music by Björk, Coldplay, Maria Callas and others. The performers play out everything from suicide to rape to fat jokes, challenging the watcher to experience the extreme vulnerability and complexity of human life. This is dance that leaves you weak at the knees, breathless and wanting more. Performed with longtime creative partner and award-winning dancer Shanell Winlock (celebrated for her work with Akram Khan’s company), Maqoma’s Southern Comfort looks at how perceived ideas shape the human experience. A mirror of behavior, attitudes and reactions, this humorous and passionate piece peels back the fragile veneer concealing the power games people play. The second duet, Bound, commissioned from collaborator and friend Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, unites all three artists in a desire to see contemporary dance as a space where traditions fuse and foster new expression. In this piece, the dancers investigate the bonds we have to one another, to our heritage, our desires and our expectations. Each duet will be performed to original music performed live by musicians chosen for their diverse backgrounds and traditions. “A wonderfully entertaining duet premiered in London, wrapped up themes of conflict in humour and originality.” Exploding onto the stage in an eruption of colour, sound and beauty, Kodo create a thrilling stage spectacle unlike any other – one that few audiences will ever forget. From the first heart-pounding solo beat of the great taiko drum, to the hypnotic pulsating of the entire company drumming in unison, the effect is hypnotic and exhilarating. With physical endurance and musical prowess the skilled drummers become one with the instrument, showcasing its immense versatility and producing delightful tempos. Graceful gorgeously clad dancers pay tribute to the artistry of traditional Japanese dance, and traditional vocal music provides a tender counterpoint to the intensity of the drums. A worldwide phenomenon, Kodo Drummers leave the audience breathless with admiration and pleasure. “Dynamic, electrifying vision… Nothing will prepare you for the 1,000 lb. drum assault, the precise timing or the wall of sound.
