Quel bonheur de savoir qu’encore une fois cet été nous aurons le privilège de travailler avec un
groupe de jeunes passionnés comme nous du français ! Nous vous souhaitons la bienvenue à
l’Académie française du gouverneur de Virginie 2012, et nous avons hâte de faire votre connaissance
en personne le 23 juin. Nous nous vouons depuis déjà un bon moment à la préparation d’une
expérience d’immersion à la fois intensive et décontracte, avec des échanges intellectuels de haut
niveau ainsi que des moments de détente enrichissants. Nous concevons un programme équilibré
avec la découverte de différentes sociétés et régions francophones, ainsi qu’un approfondissement
de vos connaissances linguistiques. Notre but, c’est de mieux vous équiper à vous débrouiller le
jour où vous vous trouverez soit dans un pays francophone, soit avec un groupe de Francophones,
tout en créant une actualité où vous pouvez vous épanouir et goûter à la joie de vivre si
caractéristique de la culture française partout où elle s’est implantée.
Ensemble, nous allons entreprendre cette tâche avec humour et bonne volonté, plein de dynamisme
et d’esprit innovateur. Chacun va contribuer son savoir-faire, et dans une ambiance solidaire, je suis
sûre que nous allons former une équipe géniale!
Pour bien vous préparer à ce programme, je vous invite à lire attentivement les informations qui
suivent cette première page. Veuillez me faire parvenir les formulaires dûment remplis ainsi que les
autres documents avant le 7 juin.

LES COURS
LANGUE ET CULTURE ARABE
Monsieur Hamaker
Dans ce cours, on va commencer à découvrir le monde arabe à travers sa langue et sa culture. On va
explorer aussi les liens franco-arabes historiques et contemporains.
LE QUÉBEC
Madame Montminy-Jones
On étudiera le Québec et les expressions québécoises populaires, diverses et très courantes.
Elles sont acceptables à l’oral et dignes de reconnaissance. Elles donnent au français du Québec
toute sa saveur et sa particularité unique au monde. Chaque mot, chaque expression est un précieux
héritage des ancêtres. Ainsi quand un Québécois parle, il chante un peu l'histoire de son peuple. Ce
cours vous donnera la possibilité d’apprendre sur une magnifique province du Canada: Le Québec et
ses expressions.
PHONÉTIQUE ET DÉCOUVERTES LINGUISTIQUES
Monsieur Keith
Ce cours se concentrera sur l’étude de la production et la perception des sons de la langue
française. En pratiquant la production des sons à travers des exercices et en développant des oeuvres
originales pour souligner les distinctions linguistiques, l'élève apprendra comment la précision de
prononciation joue dans la poésie, la chanson, et les locutions de tous les jours.
LA CULTURE BELGE
Madame Midgley
Dans ce cours, on étudiera la culture belge, c’est-à-dire : les produits, les pratiques, et les perspectives
de Belgique. On fera analyse des tableaux de Magritte, des chansons de Jacques Brel et des bandes
dessinées de Thierry Coppée. On regardera un film qui nous apprend plus sur la culture belge et
leurs comportements sociaux. On découvrira des monuments importants. On apprendra aussi à
propos des traditions et des fêtes comme le 21 juillet et le carnaval de Binge. On parlera aussi des
spécialités belges et on fera des gaufres ensemble.
LA FRANCE CONTEMPORAINE
Monsieur Trumbo-Tual
Ce cours permettra aux Académiciens de développer leur culture générale pour mieux intégrer la
société française au moment d’un voyage, d’un échange scolaire, ou bien d’une mission
professionnelle en France. Le but est de vous donner un potentiel d'échange plus riche en vous
fournissant des bases politiques, économiques et culturelles. Dans chaque cours, comme en lisant un
journal, nous étudierons une “rubrique” particulière: France, Politique, International,
Economie/Affaires, Science/Technologie, Sport et Voyages.

backpack, a good supply of pens, pencils and paper, and a spiral notebook along with scissors, glue,
markers, colored pencils, and any other arts and crafts supplies that you enjoy using. You are also

Nous allons nous retrouver certains soirs pour un atelier de Beaux Arts. Ce sera une manière d’utiliser le
français d’une façon pratique et pragmatique.
Vous allez voir ci-dessous une liste d’activités qu’on vous propose. Chaque activité a sa valeur unique et
spéciale. Ainsi pour satisfaire le goût de chaque individu, on va vous demander d’énumérer chaque activité
de 1 à 3 ; 1 étant le numéro qui indique celui qui vous intéresse le plus et 3 le moins. On va vous dédier
l’activité de votre choix selon la date où je recevrai vos formulaires.
__________ LA CRÉATION ARTISTIQUE ET MISE EN PLACE D’UNE EXPOSITION
On proposera aux élèves de produire ensemble des œuvres artistiques et ensuite de mettre en place une
exposition de ces travaux. Ce projet va s’organiser en différents points tels que définir une thématique de
travail, produire des œuvres.

Nous chanterons ensemble et découvrirons la musique en français. Si vous avez une partition de
composition musicale, apportez-la.
__________ LE THÉATRE
Durant l’activité théâtre, nous mettrons en scène une œuvre dramaturgique. Ce sera une source de
développement personnel en plus d’une extension de notre créativité. Celle-ci sera un travail collectif de tous
les membres de l’atelier--combinant notre passion et l’utilisation de notre imaginaire.

Lexington, Virginia – On parle français!
This is an important phrase for 60 Virginia high school students for the next three weeks at the
Virginia Governor's French Immersion Academy at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.
Until July 14, the French Academy's students will live their lives completely in French to boost their abilities
to use the language.
The Virginia Department of Education sponsors five Governor's Foreign Language Academies each
summer where students are nurtured and language skills are cultivated. Participating students were selected
through a statewide competition. CBS News and USA Today have featured the Academies as examples of
innovative foreign language programs. In addition, Virginia Commonwealth University hosts STARTALK
Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, and Russian Academies, which operate concurrently with the Governor’s
Academies.

After pledging to speak French exclusively, he/she and the other students will eat, sleep, and breathe français.
The students will learn, not in the ordinary way with textbooks and CDs, but by really using the
language in the cafeteria, in the dorm, on the soccer field, as well as in the classroom. And they will have
the times of their lives while doing it. Academy participants attend creative classes such as France of
Today, the Culture of Québec, Phonetics, the Culture of Belgium, and Arabic each morning (including
Saturdays) to encourage them to take an active part in their learning
The language immersion extends beyond the classroom with afternoon activities such as cooking,
sport, and visual and performing arts. Students' writing and photography skills are developed through
journals, a yearbook, videos, and weekly newspapers. All activities are hands-on and in real-life situations,
making language acquisition meaningful, practical, and lasting.
The Academy will be a truly unique endeavor, one that alumni often describe as unforgettable and
among the best and most fun experiences of their lives.
