James H. Murta, FCIA, FSA
Jim Murta earned a BA (Honours) degree, specializing in actuarial mathematics, from the University of Manitoba in
1969. He qualified as a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries in 1975.
Before his retirement in 2006, Mr. Murta was Principal and a senior consultant in the Health and Welfare and Pension
practices of the actuarial consulting firm of Towers Perrin in Calgary where he worked for 17 years.
Prior to this, Jim managed the Edmonton office of Mercer Human Resource Consulting for five years, after coming
from Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company in Winnipeg, where he was Chief Actuary.
For many years, Mr. Murta was very involved with volunteer work with the Institute having served on the Workers’
Compensation Committee, the Joint Task Force on Unemployment Insurance, the Emerging Issues Committee, the
Task Force on Workers’ Compensation, the Task Force on Health Care Financing, the Member Services Council,
and he also chaired the Committee on Rules of Professional Conduct. He has been a member of the CIA Board since
June of 2003, and he was President of the CIA in 2007-2008.

Jim Murta a obtenu un B.A. avec spécialisation en mathématiques actuarielles à l’Université du Manitoba en 1969. Il
a mérité les titres de Fellow de la Society of Actuaries et de l’Institut canadien des actuaires en 1975.
Avant de prendre sa retraite en 2006, M. Murta était directeur et consultant principal en matière de santé et de
bienêtre et de régimes de retraite au cabinet de consultation actuarielle Towers Perrin à Calgary, au sein duquel il a
travaillé pendant 17 ans.
Auparavant, M. Murta a assuré pendant cinq années la gestion du bureau d’Edmonton de Mercer – Consultation en
ressources humaines, après un séjour à la Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company à Winnipeg, où il assumait la
fonction d’actuaire en chef.
Pendant de nombreuses années, M. Murta a contribué activement à titre bénévole aux activités de l’Institut,
notamment au sein de la Commission sur l’indemnisation des accidents du travail, du Groupe de travail conjoint sur
l’assurance-chômage, de la Commission des affaires nouvelles, du Groupe de travail sur le financement des soins de
santé, de la Direction des services aux membres, et il a assumé la présidence de la Commission des règles de
déontologie. Il est membre du Conseil d’administration de l’ICA depuis juin 2003 et a été élu président désigné de
l’ICA en juin 2006.
