L`honorable Hector Daniel Lang est président du Comité permanent

L’honorable Hector Daniel Lang est président du Comité permanent de la sécurité nationale
et de la défense depuis 2013, et il a été réélu à ce poste le 25 janvier 2016. Au cours de sa
présidence, le Comité a publié plusieurs rapports, notamment sur le harcèlement sexuel
dans la GRC (2013); la défense antimissiles balistiques (2014); l’Agence des services
frontaliers du Canada (2015) et les menaces à la sécurité du Canada (2015). Le Comité a
également étudié des projets de loi d’initiative parlementaire et des projets de loi du
gouvernement, dont la Loi antiterroriste de 2015. Monsieur Lang a également été membre
du Comité sénatorial permanent de la régie interne, des budgets et de l’administration et du
sous-comité des anciens combattants. Il est actif au sein de différents groupes
parlementaires, dont ceux qui unissent le Canada avec l’OTAN, avec les États-Unis et avec
le Japon. Il a été membre fondateur du Groupe d’amitié parlementaire Canada-Pérou.
Né en 1948 à Dawson Creek, en Colombie-Britannique, il a déménagé avec sa famille à
Whitehorse au Yukon, où il a fait ses études élémentaires et secondaires avant de
fréquenter l’Université de l’Alaska à Fairbanks.
Élu pour la première fois à l’Assemblée législative du Yukon en 1974, il a siégé pendant
cinq mandats consécutifs, prenant sa retraite en 1992. Pendant ces 18 années dans un
poste élu, il a été responsable de divers portefeuilles, pour ensuite servir dans l’opposition.
Toujours actif dans le milieu communautaire, M. Lang a été président du Yukon Real Estate
Board; membre du conseil d’administration de l’Association canadienne de l’immeuble;
président de Polarettes Gymnastics; vice-président du conseil des gouverneurs du Collègue
Yukon.
Après sa retraite de l’Assemblée législative, il a travaillé comme courtier immobilier jusqu’en
2008, année où il a été appelé au Sénat du Canada.
Il a quatre enfants, qui habitent à Whitehorse, et huit petits-enfants. Monsieur Lang vit
actuellement à Whitehorse avec son épouse, Valerie Hodgson, une artiste locale bien
connue.
The Honourable Hector Daniel Lang has served as Chair of the Senate Standing Committee
on National Security and Defence since 2013 and was re-elected on January 25, 2016 as
Chair. During his chairmanship, the Committee published a number of reports including on
Sexual Harassment in the RCMP (2013); Ballistic Missile Defence (2014); Canada Border
Services Agency (2015) and Treats to the Security of Canada (2015). The Committee also
scrutinized private members bills and government legislations, including the Anti-Terrorism
Act 2015. Lang also serves as a member of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Internal
Economy, Budgets and Administration and on the Sub-Committee on Veterans Affairs. He is
also an active member of various parliamentary groups including Canada-NATO; CanadaUS; Canada-Japan and was a founding member of the Canada-Peru Parliamentary
Friendship group.
Born in 1948 in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, he moved with his family to Whitehorse,
Yukon where he completed elementary and secondary school, and later attended the
University of Alaska at Fairbanks.
He was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in 1974 and served five consecutive
terms until his retirement in 1992. Over the course of his 18 years in elected office he was
responsible for numerous Ministerial portfolios and later served in the opposition.
Always active in community affairs, Lang has served as President of the Yukon Real Estate
Board; as a member o the Board of Directors for the Canadian Real Estate Association; as
President of Polarettes Gymnastics and as Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors for
Yukon College.
After retiring for the Legislature, he worked as a real estate associate until 2008, when he
was summoned to the Senate of Canada.
He has four children who reside in Whitehorse and eight grandchildren. Lang presently lives
in Whitehorse with his wife Valerie Hodgson, a well-known local artist.
