"Dana" from 9, to 18, August 1957, Hydrographieal observations were mde Oll'
eaoh of the 25 stations and on every second pelagic fishing with 2 m str"mL, net
was carried out, Chlorophylldeterminations and measuring of primary producti.on

During 1957, apart from work on shellfish and salmon and trout whioh has been
reported to the appropriate Committees, no work was carried out within the provinee
of the Committee in this oountry, During the year a numbor of fishos rare to 1ri8h
_ters were reoorded. Notab1e amongst these were specimens of the pilot fi8h
(l'!"uora'tes duotor) , torpedo (Torpeda nobiliana), forked bearded hake (Urpphycis
blennoides J and ray' S bream (Brruna raii), Several specimens were obtained of oaoh

carte entreprise en 1954, 27 dragages de sediments ont ~te falts ainsi que
18 traits de chalut entre 250 et 840 m pour 6tudier 1a distribution et 1 'abondance
des esp$oes sur ces fonds, prinoipalement du merlu~
de planet on et 146 prises d'eau ont 6tc effectuees.

Du 27 mai au 5 ,juin: Etude des acc~res du Golfe de Gascogns de 47° N a la
region du Cap Finisberr". Un enregistroment systematigue des fonds entre 200 m et
2000 m a comp1ete los donnees l'ecueillies antericurement dans cetto region,

1957 leur travail sur les pecheries de sardines, le p;:emier de ,janvie~ a avril enbre
Saint clean da Luz et Aroachon, le second d1avril a aout entre Loire et Gironde, tous
deux ef'feotuant un servioe regulier 0.8 detection des banes da poissons et des
observations hydrologiques.

During the cruise of the R/V "Y",zan" from 29. clune to 20. November a great

and qualitative characberistics of plankton, and the distribution cf hydrologie and

Large oollections of fish and shellfish wore s8cured and 38 sampIes of' sardine
and tuna were analy'sed (complobe biologie analysis),

1t was found that the mos-o productive of the whole area o.f inyostigation was
thc ooastal stretch of 30 to 40 miles wids$ Jrhe basic mass of zooplankton.,. fish
food - 1~S mainly represented by Copepodao.
Tho main ooncen-ora-oion of biomass of zoo- Emd phytoplankton was obsorved in
-ohe area fram the Cape Verde to Freetown.
c'The behaYiour of sardine (Sardinella aurita) was investigated in the Cape Verde
region where denso oonoentra-oions of -ohis fish wero enoountered. Regular vertioal
migrations were obso,rved: very donse shoals kept 0.t the noar-bottom layers in the
day-time. while at night they rose to 30 - 40 m from tho sur'face. Same shoals of
S. aurita were also found at the very surface and were olearly seen by day and night,
Such an occurrence of shoals both in the bottom and upper water layers makes
1t possible to conduct fishing operations with both demers0.l trawl and purse seine,
