Our Planet — Recycling of Electric and Electronic Appliances
Nr 3 – February 2007 Our Planet — Recycling of Electric and Electronic Appliances & Solidarity Beginning in November 2006, all retail outlets in France that sell electric or electronic equipment and appliances are required to take back without any cost to the consumer all used appliances from customers who purchase new equipment of the same type. They also have to transport the returned equipment to recycling companies. However, there is a much better way to recycle your old washing machine, computer or television set: donating them to one of several charity organizations that repair, refurbish and resell the appliances. The repairs are made by homeless or unemployed persons, or people without professional experience who have a difficult time earning a living and who thus learn valuable job skills through repairing the appliances while earning a salary at the same time. The principle is simple: you just have to call one of the organizations listed below and explain what type of equipment you don’t want anymore so that they can determine if it can be fixed (it is better to call before bringing the appliances. If need be, you can certainly find a French person to help you with the call). And then either you take the item to their shops, or they will arrange to pick it up. After the washing machine or television has been repaired by the workers of the organization, it is sold in their stores, at a very reasonable price, generally to other people in need who cannot afford brand new appliances. Here are the most important organisations: Emmaüs & Les ateliers du bocage www.emmaus-france.org www.ateliers-du-bocage.com The charity organization created by the well known late Abbé Pierre (who died last month at the age of 94) has many small workshops all over France where such equipment is repaired by the residents of their living accommodations. They have also established a chain of more “professional” workshops called “Les ateliers du Bocage”, which are located in the Ile de France region around Paris, most of the western part of the country and in the Rhône-Alpes region. Almost 1,000 paid workers at six sites benefit from initial training, and help to recycle in a more meaningful way some 58,000 tons of equipment every year. Envie www.envie.org Founded 20 years ago, Envie is a national network of 45 economic rehabilitation companies specialized in recycling and renovating household appliances, which are then sold in their shops. The workers, formally unemployed, benefit from training by specialized technicians and learn new skills while earning a salary, which helps them to become self-sufficient. More than 800,000 appliances are collected and repaired each year from all over France, and 65,000 recycled items are sold afterwards. These relatively new products offer several advantages: they consume five times less electricity and last up to ten times longer. While more expensive initially than conventional incandescent bulbs – the prices range from 4.60 to over 20 € per bulb depending on the manufacturer and the guaranteed longevity – they will be far cheaper in the long run. Replacing 4 normal 60 watt bulbs with 4 low consumption bulbs of 11 watts with the same lighting capacity as 60 watt incandescent bulbs, you can save nearly 200 kilowatts per year. Your up-front investment will be paid back in 2 year's time, and the bulbs are guaranteed for up to 9 years, again depending on the manufacturer. On the other hand, you should definitely avoid using the nearly omnipresent halogen lamps (lampes halogène). They are not only very energy hungry, but also produce high temperatures that are potentially dangerous. A single halogen lamp with a 350 watt element used just 3 hours per day will gobble up a total of 380 kilowatts per year, which is the equivalent of 23 low-energy lamps! 3 No smoking! Starting on 1 February 2007, by Government decree, it is totally forbidden to smoke in public places: the workplace in all private companies, official administrative offices, train stations, airports, schools, hospitals and all health-related buildings. And as of 1 January 2008, the same will apply to all cafés, hotels, restaurants and discothèques. France has finally decided to follow the example of Ireland and Italy because of the confirmation that one regular smoker out of two dies from tobacco, and that a total of 5,000 persons per year are victims of tabagisme passif (the inhalation of others’ smoke) in France. However the tobacco lobby, including the buralistes (tobacco shops) and the cafés-tabacs owners (cafés selling tobacco), protested and demonstrated so much that the Government agreed to give the food and lodging sector an additional delay. For more information: www.tabac.gouv.fr 4 Did you know that? Le saviez-vous ? Nearly 30% of greenhouse gas emissions in France comes from housing and individual transportation. The transport of goods accounts for 12%, industry 18% and agriculture 21% (of which almost half from raising cattle). At home, the fridge and the freezer represent an average consumption of 32% of overall electricity expenses. The dishwasher, the clothes dryer and lighting 14% each, and television and radio 12%. The washing machine accounts for 7% of the expenses, the same for the other household appliances (mixers, vacuum cleaners, hairdryers, etc.). If it is not always convenient to turn off one’s fridge, one can at least consider using one’s dryer moderately, and turning the lights off in a room when leaving it. As for the dishwasher, it is not always indispensable… A trip by plane produces 2.7 times more CO2 than in a car, and 34 times more than by train. Car-pooling might be a very good way to save petrol, and at the same time emit less greenhouse gas. Car-pooling is usually organized with colleagues, neighbours or friends close to home. Consider suggesting it yourself if the French whom you know haven’t thought of it! And there are websites for longer trips or even some local trips close to the larger cities: www.123envoiture.com www.covoiturage.com Le covoiturage peut-être un bon moyen d’économiser de l’essence, et donc de réduire ses émissions de gaz à effet de serre.
