SX is a magnetic indiepop band from Belgium around Stefanie Callebaut and
Benjamin Desmet. Together with drummer Jeroen Termote they bring ethereal
indiepop. With keyboards, reverb guitars, enchanting drums and a painfully
beautiful voice, their waving and vibrating sound results in a performance that
keeps arising.
SX was founded in the spring of 2009. In 2011 they gained momentum as their
mesmerizing song 'Black Video' became a huge success and they hit the
number one spot in several charts. Radio stations, television stations and
worldwide blogs have become wildly enthusiastic about the band. SX became
the new revelation in the Belgian music scene and they are highlighted as the
next Belgian music export product.
In 2011 they played an international tour and were present at legendary venues
as: Melkweg in Amsterdam, Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Astra in Berlin,
Arena in Vienna, Magazzini Generali in Milan...
In 2012 SX focused on their highly anticipated debut album. They have fold
their past and their future into 10 magnetic songs and took these out to a
higher plateau together with producer Ben H Allen III (Gnarls Barkley,
Animal Collective, M.I.A., Deerhunter, … ). The first rays of this
collaboration is pure chemistry: ‘Gold’.

So, let’s rewind a little bit, how did SX’s flying start take off?
Benjamin: ‘It all started some years ago in summertime. Stefanie was all
prepared for music college and I just graduated from university. So we both
completed a phase and were ready for a new one. Summertime was on our
side and we started experimenting with pop music. We quickly began writing
songs and recorded them right away. I was amazed by Stefanie’s voice. We
were trying loads of stuff with her voice and with samples, synthesizers and
beats. The first songs came out as weird mashups, but we felt we had a cool
vibe going, and there was a lot to explore!’
Stefanie: ‘At the time, I really had a love for soul & gospel music while
Benjamin was more into the raw stuff. These differences in interests were an
ideal ground to build on. We had this tension and a juvenile dream to push
boundaries, discover the world and fully develop ourselves. This is when SX
arose.’
It seems you have been growing really organically, just like ‘Black Video’
did?
Benjamin: ‘That’s true. By 2010, we threw some of our songs on the internet
and got noticed by other bands, visual artists and promotors. We started
playing small clubs and festivals. It was awesome to see our music touch
reality.’ (laughs)
Stefanie: ‘Visual artist and performer Nathalie Vanheule involved us in her
gloomy project “Save Your Smile For The Last Hour” which she performed in
Paris, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Leeds. We wrote a soundtrack for this project
and accompanied her to the UK to do a live performance of the song. Such
travels made us realize we could really do something with our music. We
wanted to move people and be on the move.’
Benjamin: ‘By then we also started realising where we wanted to go with our
music. We started to work a lot around ‘tension’ and challenged pop structures.
In this exciting period, songs like ‘Black Video’ and ‘The Future’ - also
featured on ‘Arche’ - saw light and this is when SX gained momentum...’
Stefanie: ‘We shot a video for our song ‘Black Video’ while we were on
holiday in Spain. We got a great response to it and diligent indie blogs and
radio stations started spreading the song. SX rose above sea level and by the
beginning of 2011 we got noticed by Belgian national radio station Studio
Brussels. Several weeks later the song reached the number one spot in the
hitlists. We were so happy people understood our music!’ (laughs)
Benjamin: ‘Earlier that year, we met our drummer Jeroen Termote at a rock
show where he was performing. His act really amazed us. A couple of weeks
later, we called him and after listening to our newest songs and talking about our
plans, he joined us to form the current SX. We were able to play supports for thrilling
bands like Goose, Metronomy, Ariel Pink, Das Pop, dEUS, ... and packed our bags to
gig throughout Europe: La Flêche d’Or in Paris, Melkweg in Amsterdam, Magazzini
Generali in Milan, Astra in Berlin, Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Arena in Vienna
to name a few...’
And then... everybody wanted an album?
Stefanie: ‘Yeah, that’s one way to see it! We had a lot of songs but - in all that
jazz - we hadn’t been able to record all our stuff properly. So at the start of
2012 - after our Eurosonic gig - we started recording and writing more stuff in
the SX studio. In here Benjamin engineered and mixed Black Video, so we
were quite confident we could do this again for the album. But at the same
time we were listing up our favorite producers and mixing engineers. We
ended up with a list of five, we plucked up courage and mailed each one of
them. Before we knew it we were sharing visions with wizards like Gareth
Jones (Depeche Mode, Grizzly Bear) in a London club and having Skype
gatherings with Ben H Allen III (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley,
Deerhunter, M.I.A.) who was on top of our list. With Ben H Allen III we had
an instant click. SX felt he felt SX.’
Benjamin: ‘And the possibilities as well as the timeframe were ideally! We
could finish the album in the summertime! (laughs) So we took our bags - with
some shakers and a Small Clone - to finish our ‘Arche’ in Atlanta, USA.’
How did the recording process of ‘Arche’ evolve?
Benjamin: ‘We recorded a couple of months at the SX studio and couldn’t
resist to write some new songs. After these early steps we went to my brother’s
studio - Dimitri Andreas - to finish these recordings and preproductions. He
has a really good ear and an amazing studio called ‘The White Cabin’. So he
was of great, great help to us. Ultimately we finished our recordings and
preproductions at a log cabin in The Ardennes. Our living-mixing room
window had a view on the Semois river, which you can hear on several tracks
on the album. We love water.’ (laughs)
Stefanie: ‘After that we took off to Atlanta to work with Ben H Allen III. He
has a penchant for experimental pop and an extensive record at his account.
Atlanta also has an awesome vibrant music scene and people seemed to really
dig our stuff. Even Usher’s engineer turned in now and then to check up on
our progress. We listened well to our songs and worked on them for two more
weeks before mixing them. Our ‘Arche’ was born...’
Benjamin: ‘Yeah... And it turned out to be a magnetic golden ball jumping out
of the water!’
‘Arche’ seems like a wayward name, just like ‘SX’ by the way...
Stefanie: ‘For us ‘SX’ is a logo that translates our music into two characters.
The ‘S’ and the ‘X’ are magnetic, there is a lot of tension going on there.
Standalone, ‘S’ stands for the sensual, for the past and it give us a certain kind
of ‘safe’ feeling. On the other hand, ‘X’ can stand for strength, the future and
is temptingly dangerous... Maybe they are Apollo and Dionysus’ (laughs)
Benjamin: ‘People also like to put stuff in between them, but we like them
together alone, raw. Its suggestiveness inspires us.’
Stefanie: ‘In this way ‘SX’ tells a lot about our creative process. We like
working with concepts, we like to put things in front of each other, on all
levels. We work with ‘classical instruments’ such as vocals, acoustic drums,
exotic percussion and oppose them with ‘modern instruments’: synthesizers,
guitars, samples, fx... On another level we also love ‘opposing song
structures’. A bridge that stands out, countered by a magnetic chorus. That
same tension as you can feel while analysing the word ‘SX’ is to be found in
our music.’
Benjamin: ‘Our album ‘Arche’ also carries that vibration. The word is derived
from the ancient Greek word ‘!"#$’ which means ‘first principle’ and
‘beginning’. This album is our beginning, this is where we start off! (Too
excited) But it also speaks about endings, about the death of beloved ones.
Most of all, ‘Arche’ is about an infinity that stops at a horizon. At that horizon,
possibilities arise, creativity arises, like the arpeggios at the end of ‘The
Future’. It’s a story about a creation that has to be done over and over again.’
One more thing: Can you catch SX into three slogans?
Stefanie: ‘SX is on the move, SX moves people.’
Benjamin: ‘SX is visual. It is a camera with which you make images and with
which you register images.’
Stefanie: ‘SX is suggestive. Music and lyrics refer implicitly to each other and
strengthen the whole.’
Benjamin: ‘SX exists of people of flesh and blood!’
Stefanie: ‘SX explores boundaries. Authentic boundaries: language, time,
movement, humanity, beauty, possibility...’
Benjamin: ‘SX treads new, rare paths where much can be harvested.’
Stefanie: ‘SX... We can go on for ever!’

SX is een magnetische indiepop band uit België rond Stefanie Callebaut en Benjamin
Desmet. Samen met drummer Jeroen Termote brengen ze etherische indiepop. Met
keyboards, reverb gitaren, bezwerende drums en een pijnlijk mooie stem, resulteert hun
golvende en vibrerende geluid in een performance die steeds blijft ontstaan.
SX werd opgericht in het voorjaar van 2009. In 2011 kwam SX in de spotlights toen hun
betoverende song 'Black Video' een groot succes werd en op verschillende hitlijsten op de
eerste plaats prijkte. Radiozenders, tv-stations en wereldwijde blogs werden laaiend
enthousiast over de band. SX werd de nieuwe revelatie in de Belgische muziekscene en ze

In 2011 verzorgden ze een internationale tournee in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Frankrijk,
Duitsland, Zwitserland, Oostenrijk, Italië, België, Nederland, en traden op in legendarische
locaties zoals: Melkweg in Amsterdam, Ancienne Belgique in Brussel, Astra in Berlijn,
Arena in Wenen, Magazzini Generali in Milaan ...
In 2012 focuste SX zich op hun langverwachte debuutalbum. Ze plooiden hun verleden en
toekomst in 10 magnetische songs en namen deze, samen met producer Ben H Allen III
(Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, MIA, Deerhunter, ...) mee naar een nieuwe hoogvlakte.
De eerste stralen van deze samenwerking is pure chemie: 'Gold'.

Zo, laten we eens wat terugspoelen, hoe verliep die vliegende start van SX?
Benjamin: ‘Het begon allemaal een paar jaar geleden in de zomerperiode. Stefanie was
helemaal voorbereid voor haar hogere studies muziek en ik was net afgestudeerd aan de
universiteit. We hadden dus beide een fase afgerond en waren klaar voor een nieuwe. We
hadden de zomer aan onze kant en we begonnen te experimenteren met popmuziek. We
schreven songs en namen die onmiddellijk op. Ik was erg verrast door Stefanie’s stem. We
probeerden heel wat uit met haar stem en ook met samples, synthesizers en beats. De eerste
songs kwamen tot stand als vreemde mashups, maar we voelden dat we op een goede vibe
zaten, en er was heel wat te verkennen!’
Stefanie: ‘Ik had toen een voorliefde voor soul & gospel, terwijl Benjamin meer van
rauwere muziek hield. Deze verschillen in interesses waren voor ons een ideale grond om
op te bouwen. We hadden die spanning en de jeugdige droom om grenzen te verleggen, de
wereld te ontdekken en onszelf volledig te ontwikkelen. Hier is SX ontstaan.’
Het lijkt erop dat je echt organisch aan het groeien bent, net zoals ‘Black Video’ deed?
Benjamin: ‘Inderdaad, tegen 2010 plaatsten we enkele songs op het internet en we werden
snel opgemerkt door andere bands, kunstenaars en promotors. We kregen de kans om op te
treden in kleine clubs en festivals. Het was zalig om onze muziek de werkelijkheid te zien
raken.’ (lacht)
Stefanie: ‘Beeldend kunstenaar en performer Nathalie Vanheule betrok ons in haar project
“Save Your Smile For The Last Hour” wat ze opvoerde in Parijs, Antwerpen, Amsterdam en
Leeds. We schreven een soundtrack voor dit project en vergezelden haar naar het Verenigd
Koninkrijk om een live performance van dit nummer te brengen. Zo’n reizen hebben ons
doen beseffen dat we echt iets konden doen met onze muziek. We wilden onszelf en andere
mensen bewegen.’
Benjamin: ‘Tegen dan begonnen we te beseffen waar we naar toe wilden met onze muziek.
We werkten heel wat rond ‘spanning’ en gingen popstructuren uitdagen. In deze
opwindende periode zagen songs zoals ‘Black Video’ en ‘The Future’ – die ook voorkomen
op ‘Arche’ – het licht en toen kwam SX in een stroomversnelling...
Stefanie: ‘We namen een video op voor onze song ‘Black Video’ terwijl we in Spanje op
vakantie waren. Hierop kregen we erg veel reactie en indieblogs en radiozenders begonnen
de track te verspreiden. SX steeg ‘boven zeeniveau’ en bij het begin van 2011 werden we
opgemerkt door de Belgische radiozender Studio Brussel. Verscheidene weken later bereikte
de song de nummer één plaats in de hitlijsten. We waren zo gelukkig dat mensen onze
muziek begrepen!’ (lacht)
Benjamin: ‘Eerder dat jaar ontmoettten we onze drummer Jeroen Termote op een show
waar hij optrad. Zijn performance viel ons erg op. Een paar weken later belden we hem en
nadat we samen onze nieuwste songs beluisterden en over onze plannen praatten, vervoegde
hij het huidige SX. We hadden de kans om als support te spelen voor zinderende bands als
Goose, Metronomy, Ariel Pink, Das Pop, dEUS, ... en speelden shows doorheen Europa: La
Flêche d’Or in Parijs, Melkweg in Amsterdam, Magazzini Generali in Milaan, Astra in
Berlijn, Ancienne Belgique in Brussel, Arena in Wenen om er een paar te noemen…’
En dan…Wou iedereen een album?
Stefanie: ‘Ja, inderdaad. Dat is één manier om het te zien! We hadden heel wat songs maar
– in al die opwinding - hadden we de tijd nog niet gevonden om al ons materiaal naar
behoren op te nemen. Tegen begin 2012 – na onze Eurosonic gig – startten we opnames en
schreven we verder songs in de SX studio. Hier engineerde en mixte Benjamin ‘Black
Video’, dus hadden er alle vertrouwen in dat we dit op die manier ook voor het album
konden gaan doen. Terzelfdertijd echter waren we ook onze favoriete producers en mixing
engineers aan het oplijsten. We eindigden met een lijst van vijf, raapten onze moed samen
en mailden elk van hen. Voor we het wisten waren we in een Londense club ideëen aan het
delen met een wizard als Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Grizzly Bear) en hadden we Skype
gesprekken met Ben H Allen III (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Deerhunter, M.I.A.) die
bovenaan onze lijst stond. Met Ben H Allen III hadden we onmiddellijk een klik. SX voelde
dat hij SX voelde.’
Benjamin: ‘En de mogelijkheden zowel als het tijdskader waren ideaal. We konden het
album in de zomerperiode afwerken! (lacht) Dus pakten we onze valiezen, met wat shakers
en een Small Clone om onze ‘Arche’ af te werken in Atlanta, USA.’
Hoe evolueerde het opname proces van ‘Arche’?
Benjamin: ‘We waren songs aan het opnemen in de SX studio en we konden het niet laten
om nog een aantal nieuwe songs te schrijven. Na deze initiële stappen gingen we naar de
studio van mijn broer - Dimitri Andreas – om onze opnames en preproducties af te werken.
Hij heeft een echt goed oor en een verbluffende studio ‘The White Cabin’. Voor ons was hij
van heel groot belang, hij heeft ons enorm geholpen. Tenslotte beëindigden we onze
opnames en preproducties in een chalet in de Ardennen. Ons living-mixing room venster
had zicht op de Semois rivier, die je kan horen op verschillende tracks op het album. We
houden van water.’ (lacht)
Stefanie: ‘Daarna vertrokken we naar Atlanta om ons album af te werken met Ben H Allen
III. Hij heeft een voorkeur voor experimentele pop en een uitgebreide staat van dienst op
zijn palmares. Atlanta heeft ook een vibrerende muziek scene en de mensen leken onze
muziek echt te snappen. Zelfs Usher’s engineer kwam nu en dan even langs om onze
vooruitgang te checken. We luisterden goed naar onze songs en werkten er nog twee weken
aan vooraleer te mixen. Onze ‘Arche’ was er...’
Benjamin: ‘Ja... En het bleek een magnetische gouden bal te zijn die uit het water stijgt!’
‘Arche’ lijkt een weerbarstige naam, net als ‘SX’ overigens…
Stefanie: ‘Voor ons is ‘SX’ een logo dat onze muziek vertaalt in twee lettertekens. De ‘S’ en
de ‘X’ zijn magnetisch, er heerst veel spanning tussenbeide. Op zich staat de‘ S’ voor
sensueel, voor het verleden en geeft het ons een soort van ‘veilig’ gevoel. Aan de andere
kant, kan de ‘X’ staan voor kracht, de toekomst en is aanlokkelijk gevaarlijk... Misschien
zijn het wel Apollo en Dionysius.’ (lacht)
Benjamin: ‘Mensen houden ervan om letters tussenbeide te plaatsen, maar we houden van
die twee letters alleen, samen, rauw. Die suggestiviteit inspireert ons.’
Stefanie: ‘Op deze manier vertelt ‘SX’ heel wat over ons creatieve proces. We werken
graag met concepten, we plaatsen graag dingen tegenover elkaar, op alle niveaus. We
gebruiken bijvoorbeeld ‘klassieke instrumenten’ zoals vocals, akoestische drums, exotische
percussie en stellen daar ‘moderne instrumenten’ tegenover: synthesizers, gitaren, samples,
fx... Op een ander niveau houden we er van contrast te brengen in song structuren. Een
bridge die opvalt, gecounterd door een magnetisch refrein. Diezelfde spanning die je kan
vatten als we het woord ‘SX’ analyseren, kan je eveneens vinden in onze muziek.’
Benjamin: ‘Ons album ‘Arche’ draagt ook die vibe. Het woord is afgeleid van het oude
Griekse woord ‘!"#$’ wat betekent ‘eerste principe’ en ‘begin’. Dit album is ons begin, dit
is ons ontstaan! (Te opgewonden) Maar het album vertelt ook over eindes, over de dood van
geliefden. Nog het meest van al beschrijft ‘Arche’ deze oneindigheid die samenplooit in een
horizon. Op die horizon, ontstaan mogelijkheden, ontluikt creativiteit, zoals de arpeggio’s
aan het eind van ‘The Future’. Het is een verhaal over een creatie die steeds opnieuw en
opnieuw tot stand moet komen.’
Nog één iets: Kan je SX vatten in drie slogans?
Stefanie: ‘SX is in beweging, SX beweegt mensen.’
Benjamin: ‘SX is visueel. Het is een camera waarmee je beelden maakt en waarmee je
beelden vastlegt.’
Stefanie: ‘SX is suggestief. Muziek en tekst verwijzen impliciet naar elkaar en versterken
zo het geheel.’
Benjamin: ‘SX bestaat uit mensen van vlees en bloed!’
Stefanie: ‘SX verkent grenzen. Authentieke grenzen: taal, tijd, beweging, mensheid,
schoonheid, mogelijkheid... ‘
Benjamin: ‘SX betreedt nieuwe, zelden begane paden waar nog veel geoogst kan worden.’
Stefanie: ‘SX... We kunnen voor altijd blijven doorgaan…!’

SX est un groupe indie pop magnétique belge. Le noyau du groupe est composé par Stefanie
Callebaut et Benjamin Desmet. Ils sont accompagnés par le batteur Jeroen Termote, leur
apportant le côté indie pop éthéré.
À leurs claviers, guitares, tambours et réverbérations hypnotiques s’ajoute une voix
douloureusement belle, produisant une sublime performance.
SX est né au printemps 2009 et a pris de l’ampleur avec «!Black Video!», une mélodie
enchanteresse qui fut dès sa sortie un véritable succès. À tel point qu’elle fut propulsé à la
première place des plus grandes stations de radio, chaînes télé et blogs mondiaux.
SX a mis tout le monde en extase. Ce groupe est LA révélation de la scène musicale belge.
À ce jour, l’exportation de leur talent s’est imposé à eux.
En 2011, ils ont déjà réalisé une tournée internationale. Ils ont alors ébloui le Royaume Uni,
la France, l’Allemagne, la Suisse et l’Autriche en passant par les Pays-Bas et leur pays
natal, la Belgique. Ils ont foulé des lieux mythiques comme le Melkweg à Amsterdam,
l’Ancienne Belgique à Bruxelles, l’Astra à Berlin, l’Arena à Vienne et le Magazzini
Generali à Milan.
En 2012 SX concentré sur son premier album tant attendu, a placé son passé et son avenir
en dix chansons magnétiques fondues ensemble avec le producteur Ben H Allen III (Gnarls
Barkley, Animal Collective, MIA, Deerhunter), plaçant ainsi leur œuvre au sommet.
On peut d’ores et déjà dire que le premier rayon de cette coopération n’est autre que de la
chimie pure, «!Gold».
Le lancement en octobre 2012 de cet album, nommé «!ARCHE!» est l’évènement à ne
surtout pas rater!!
SX c’est bien sûr!: Stefanie Callebaut pour la voix et le clavier, Benjamin Desmet pour la
guitare et le clavier & Jeroen Termote pour la batterie.
Reprenons du début. Comment a débuté l’aventure SX!?
Benjamin!: ‘Tout a commencé un été il y a quelques années. Stefanie avait terminé sa
formation à l’École Supérieure de Musique et moi, j’étais tout juste diplômé du
conservatoire. Nous étions donc en transition entre une phase de formation achevé et une
phase de nouvelle construction. Le temps était de notre côté et nous avons commencé à
s’essayer à la musique pop. Nous avons rapidement écrit et enregistré quelques chansons.
J’ai été surpris par la voix de Stéphanie. Nous avons fait beaucoup d’essais avec sa voix.
Nous avons utilisé des samples, des rythmes et des synthétiseurs. Les premières chansons
sont venues par hasard mais nous avions de suite senti qu’il régnait une ambiance cool à
travers notre musique. Nous avions encore beaucoup de choses à découvrir!’
Stefanie!: ‘À cette époque, j’avais un véritable amour pour la soul et le gospel. Tandis que
Benjamin était adepte de musique plus dure et plus percutante. Ces différences dans nos
intérêts respectifs constituaient une base idéale pour innover et construire. Notre pensée,
jeune à l’époque, nous a apporté une excitation mêlée d’ une envie de repousser nos limites.
Ce qui nous a conduits à explorer notre monde musicale et à nous épanouir pleinement.’
Il semble que vous ayez pris de l’ampleur un peu comme «!Black Video!» l’a fait.
Benjamin!: ‘C’est vrai. En 2010, nous avons diffusé quelques-unes de nos chansons sur
Internet et nous avons été remarqué par d’autres groupes, artistes visuels et organisateurs.
Nous avons commencé à nous produire dans des festivals et de petits clubs. Nous avons été
bouleversé de voir que notre musique avait frappé le monde réel.’ (rires)
Stefanie!: ‘Nathalie Vanheule, artiste plasticienne, nous a conviés à son projet, plutôt
sombre et lugubre, «!Save Your Smile For The Last Hour!» qui perçait à Paris, Anvers,
Amsterdam et Leeds. Nous avons écrit la bande son du projet et nous l’avons accompagné
en live au Royaume Uni. Ces voyages nous ont fait réaliser ce que nous pouvions faire avec
notre musique. Nous voulions que ce mouvement continue d’avancer en touchant les gens.’
Benjamin!: ‘Grace à cela, nous avons commencé à comprendre où nous voulions aller avec
notre musique. Nous avons beaucoup travaillé sur les tensions en défiant les structures pop
existantes. Cette période passionnante est à l’origine de chansons comme «!Black Video!» et
«!The Future!» que vous pouvez retrouver sur l’album «!ARCHE!».’
Stefanie!: ‘Nous avons enregistré un clip pour «!Black Video!» pendant nos vacances en
Espagne. Les gens ont réagi avec enthousiasme à la diffusion sur les blogs indie et les
stations de radio. Au début de l’année 2011 nous avons constaté grâce à la station de radio
belge Studio Brussel que SX avait définitivement émergé. Quelques semaines plus tard la
chanson atteignait la place de numéro un dans les charts. Nous étions si heureux que les
gens comprennent notre musique!’ (rires)
Benjamin!: ‘Plutôt dans l’année nous avions rencontré notre batteur Jeroen Termote à un
spectacle rock où il jouait. Sa performance nous a vraiment surpris. Quelques semaines plus
tard nous l’avons appelé et lui avons fait écouter nos dernières chansons. Nous lui avons
parlé de nos plans et il a rejoint SX. Par la suite nous avons pu jouer en première partie de
groupes intéressants comme Goose, Metronomy, Ariel Pink, Das Pop, dEUS, … et ces
groupes-là nous ont convié à les suivre à travers l’Europe. Nous avons fait nos bagages
pour!: la Flèche d’Or à Paris, le Melkweg à Amsterdam, le Magazinni Generali à Milan,
l’Astra à Berlin, l’Ancienne Belgique à Bruxelles, l’Arena à Vienne pour n’en citer que
quelques-uns.’
Et puis… Tout le monde attendait un album!?
Stefanie!: ‘Oui, en effet. C’est une façon de voir ça. Nous avions beaucoup de chansons,
mais toute cette effervescence nous n’avons pas eu le temps d’enregistrer notre maquette
comme nous aurions dû le faire. Nous avons commencé les enregistrements et les écritures
un peu plus tard dans notre propre studio. Ainsi Benjamin a mixé «!Black Video!» ce qui
nous a mis en confiance pour le reste de l’album. Cependant nous avions une liste de
grands producteurs et ingénieurs du son préférés. Notre liste finale comptait cinq noms.
Nous avons alors dû rassembler tout notre courage pour contacter chacun d’entre eux par
mail. Avant de savoir que nous allions échanger des visions avec un magicien du son tel
que Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Grizzly Bear) dans un club londonien, nous avons eu des
conversations via Skype avec le numéro 1 de notre liste!: Ben H Allen III (Animal
Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Deerhunter, MIA). Là, on a eu le déclic, on a tout de suite
compris qu’il ressentait vraiment SX.’
Benjamin!: ‘Les opportunités, le calendrier, tout était parfait!! Nous pouvions finir l’album
de l’été!! (Rires) Nous avons donc pris nos sacs, une copie de notre «!bébé!»! album et
l’avons conduit à Atlanta (USA) jusqu’à ce que!«!Arche!» arrive à maturité.’
Comment s’est déroulé le processus d’enregistrement!?
Benjamin!: ‘Nous sommes restés quelques mois dans le studio SX et nous n’avons pas pu
résister à l’écriture de nouvelles chansons. Après cette étape, nous sommes allés au studio
de mon frère -Dimitri Andreas – pour l’enregistrement et la finalisation de nos préproductions. Il a une très bonne oreille et un studio incroyable «!The White Cabin!». Son
avis a eu une très grande importance, il nous a énormément aidés. Pour terminer, nous
avons mis fin à nos enregistrements et maquettes dans un chalet dans les Ardennes. La
fenêtre de notre salon de mixage avait vue sur la rivière Semois que vous pourrez entendre
sur plusieurs titres de l’album. Nous aimons l’eau…’ (Rires)
Stefanie!: ‘Puis nous sommes allés à Atlanta pour travailler avec Ben H Allen III. Il a une
préférence pour la pop expérimentale et un énorme palmarès. Atlanta a une scène musicale
large, ouverte et dynamique et les gens semblaient vraiment comprendre notre musique.
Même l’ingénieur du son de Usher est venu surveiller nos avancées. Nous avons écouté
attentivement nos chansons et y avons travaillé deux semaines avant de les mixer. Notre
album «!Arche!» était né…’
Benjamin!: ‘Oui …et l’image de tout ce travail réalisé est un peu comme une sphère, un
champ magnétique doré émergeant au-dessus de la rivière!!’
«!Arche!» semble être un nom indomptable, indescriptible, comme l’effet d’SX …
Stefanie!: ‘Pour nous, SX est un logo. Notre musique se traduit par deux personnages. Le
«!S!» et le «!X!» sont magnétiques, un courant passe entre eux. Seul, le!«!S!»
signifie!sensuel!et correspond au passé, donne un sentiment de «!sécurité!». De l’autre côté,
le!«!X!» se dresse, c’est la force, aussi séduisante que dangereuse, l’avenir… Ou peut-être
un peu comme Apollon et Dionysos.’ (Rires)
Benjamin!: ‘Les gens aiment mettre des lettres entre les deux, mais nous les préférons à
l’état brut. Leur suggestivité nous inspire.’
Stefanie!: ‘De cette façon, «!SX!» dit beaucoup de choses sur notre processus créatif. Nous
aimons travailler avec des concepts, Nous sommes heureux de la place que prend chaque
chose, à tous les niveaux. Nous travaillons avec des instruments «!traditionnels!» tels que
chant, batterie acoustique, percussions exotiques mis en opposition à des instruments
«!modernes!»!: synthétiseurs, guitares, samples, SX… À un autre niveau nous aimons la
«!structure!» de cet affrontement dans nos chansons. Un pont qui fait saillie entre les
différents instruments et le refrain magnétique qui vient s’appuyer contre ces oppositions.
C’est la même tension que vous pouvez percevoir lorsque vous analysez le mot «!SX!» que
celle que vous pouvez trouver dans nos chansons.’
Benjamin!: ‘«!Arche!» est aussi à l’origine de la vibration. Le mot est un dérivé de «"#$%»
du grec ancien signifiant «!premier principe!» et!«!commencement!». Cet album est notre
début, c’est là que nous commençons (Très excité!). Mais il parle aussi de fin, à propos de la
mort des amoureux et ceux qu’on aime. Mais le point le plus important c’est l’«Arche», une
partie de l’infini, délimité ou coupé par l’horizon. À l’horizon, toutes les possibilités sont là.
C’est la créativité, comme les arpèges à la fin de «!The Future!». Il s’agit de l’histoire de
l’éternel et infini cycle créateur.’
Une dernière chose!: Pouvez-vous résumer SX en trois phrases!?
Stefanie!: ‘SX est le mouvement, SX fait bouger les gens.’
Benjamin!: ‘SX est visuel, Il s’agit d’un appareil qui vous permet de prendre des photos, il
capture les images.’
Stefanie!: ‘SX est suggestif. Paroles et musique se réfèrent implicitement l’un à l’autre et
renforce l’ensemble.’
Benjamin!: ‘SX est composé de personnes de chair et de sang!’
Stefanie : ‘SX explore les frontières. Frontières authentiques!: la langue, le temps, le
mouvement, l’humanité, la beauté, les possibilités…
Benjamin!: ‘SX pénètre une voie nouvelle, rarement battue où une grande partie peut être
récoltée.’
