BIOGRAPHIE
Sékouba Diabaté nait en 1964 à Kintinya près de Siguiri en Haute-Guinée, de parents griots. Sa mère, Mariama Samoura, est une
chanteuse rendue célèbre par un titre que reprendra plus tard son fils : Apollo. Bien que son père s'oppose à ce que le jeune
Sékouba devienne lui-même chanteur, il se fait remarquer dans plusieurs orchestres locaux de Siguiri et reçoit, en 1979, le prix du
meilleur chanteur de Guinée. Il rejoint alors l'orchestre national le Bembeya Jazz à la demande expresse du président guinéen
Ahmed Sékou Touré. Il y acquiert son surnom Bambino lui permettant de ne pas être confondu avec son homonyme, le guitariste et
virtuose de cet orchestre.
En parallèle de sa carrière solo, il rejoint, comme invité puis comme membre permanent, le groupe de salsa africaine Africando.
Déjà présent dans "Gombo Salsa", il chante "Sonfo", qui appelle les hommes à "être à la hauteur", à faire preuve de sagesse,
d'attention, d'écoute réciproque.
Avec son album Sinikan, dont François Bréant est l’arrangeur, il se fait connaître par un large public comme l'un des meilleurs
représentants de la musique mandingue contemporaine. Sa voix de ténor lyrique est proche de celle de Kouyaté Sory Kandia, autre
célèbre chanteur guinéen qui a contribué à révéler la musique mandingue.
En 2004, à l'initiative du producteur Ibrahima Sylla, il enregistre avec entre autres Kandia Kouyaté, Bako Dagnon, Kémo Kandé,
Kerfala Kanté, Kassé Mady Diabaté, une série de standards de la musique mandingue. Ces enregistrements donnent deux CD
intitulés "Mandekalou", fleurons des plus grands djéli (griots) mandingues contemporains.
Son dernier album sortie en 2012, a accomplie son parcours par la mise en avant d’un style plus personnel. Ce dernier lui a permis
de continuer à scionner d’une manière plus singulière les scènes du monde.
On notera, le Stade De France, Bercy, Abidjan festival ou encore le London African Music Festival.

His region of north-eastern
eastern Guinea that lies at the heart of the ancient Mande Empire. It wasn't
long before word reached the capital and in 1983 he was asked to join the pre-eminent
pre
group
of the time, Bembeya Jazz National. Most of his fellow band members were in their 40s, so
young Sékouba was dubbed Bambino – the Italian for “baby”. Why Italian? He’s not
n sure, but
Bambino has been his professional name ever since.
Today Bambino is himself in his 40s and as a simple YouTube search will confirm, is now
the pre-eminent
eminent singer of Guinea. Why is he not more well-known
well known in the West? Perhaps as
an artist alreadyy fêted among his people he has no particular need to make concessions for
another market. Perhaps, like the similarly Latino-named
Latino named Franco, the word 'Bambino' just
does not suggest 'Africa' and thereby confuses our consumer minds. No matter. In these days
of instant access, maybe we should simply count ourselves lucky we can easily hear some of
the best the world can offer.
Because make no mistake, Bambino is one of the best. Over the years he's presented
himself in many different formats, but always with integrity

and art. Here he is stripped down
to the bare minimum - which, in Guinea, means 15 musicians - but all acoustic, all beautifully
sympathetic and all tight in support of the main event: Bambino's voice and his songs.
Whether in praise of a patron orr in condemnation of female circumcision, Bambino's voice
and the uniquely rolling grooves and melancholy modes of Guinea demand that we listen.
It's a command worth obeying.
