L’ancien bâtiment, construit de 1912 à 1924 par l’architecte Coureau, a été
entièrement restructuré. Il est affecté sur 4 niveaux aux fonctions d’accueil (salle de
lecture, salle d’expositions, salles de conférences) et d’administration.
Le bâtiment neuf, qui lui est accolé, comprend un niveau de locaux techniques (salle
de tri, atelier de microfilm, etc) et 6 niveaux de magasins climatisés.
Les facades de ce bâtiment sont aveugles et recouvertes de teck. Les architectes
sont Dominique Perrault et Alfred Heude.
