Die Fondation Beyeler zeigt als erstes Schweizer Museum
eine umfassende Ausstellung zu Hodlers Spätwerk. Seine
Bedeutung für die Kunst der Moderne wird gerade in diesen letzten Schaffensjahren sichtbar. Ferdinand Hodler,
der wie kein anderer Maler in seinen Gemälden das Bild
und das Selbstverständnis der Schweiz prägte, war zugleich einer der wichtigsten Künstler des Übergangs vom
19. Jh. zur Moderne. Die rund 80 Bilder umfassende
Ausstellung in der Fondation Beyeler konzentriert sich
auf Werke, aus den letzten fünf Jahren seines Lebens
(1913–1918). Der aus sozial schwierigen Verhältnissen
gekommene Künstler musste sich niemandem mehr beweisen: Er war wohlhabend und berühmt geworden. In
Serien greift er seine grossen Lebensthemen wieder auf:
Das Selbstportrait, die Schweizer Alpenwelt, die Frauen und den Tod. Seine immer radikaler und abstrakter
werdenden Werke kündigen bereits die Moderne an. Die
Ausstellung entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit der Neuen
Galerie, New York. Die Leihgaben stammen aus renommierten Schweizer und amerikanischen Privatsammlungen und internationalen Museen. Kuratoren sind Ulf
Küster (Fondation Beyeler) und Jill Lloyd (Neue Galerie).
La Fondation Beyeler est le premier musée suisse à
consacrer une vaste exposition à l’œuvre tardive de
Hodler. C’est dans ses dernières années d’activité que
sa place majeure dans l’art moderne est apparue clairement. Ferdinand Hodler, dont l’œuvre a marqué comme
celle de peu de peintres l’image extérieure et intérieure
de la Suisse, fut un des plus grands représentants de la
transition entre le XIXe siècle et l’époque moderne. Regroupant 80 œuvres, l’exposition de la Fondation Beyeler
se concentre sur les cinq dernières années de sa vie
(1913–1918). L’artiste d’origine modeste n’a plus rien à
prouver : il connaît l’aisance et la notoriété. Il reprend
alors sous forme de séries les grands thèmes de sa
vie : l’autoportrait, les Alpes suisses, les femmes et la
mort. Ses œuvres de plus en plus radicales et abstraites
annoncent déjà la peinture moderne. Cette exposition
a été réalisée avec la Neue Galerie de New York. Les
prêts proviennent de collections privées américaines et
suisses et de musées du monde entier. Les commissaires sont Ulf Küster (Fondation Beyeler) et Jill Lloyd
(Neue Galerie).
The Fondation Beyeler is the first Swiss museum to devote
a major exhibition to the late oeuvre of Ferdinand Hodler
(1853–1918). Concentrating upon works produced
in the last five years of his life, the exhibition pays
tribute to the Swiss artist as one of the most important
representatives of the transition from the 19th century to
modernism. Ferdinand Hodler, whose paintings shaped
and symbolized Switzerland’s picture and perception
of itself like those of no other artist, revisits in his late
works the themes that had occupied him all his life –
his own self-portrait, the magnificent Alpine landscape,
women, and death. As he explores these themes in
new series and variations, his style grows ever more
radical and abstract: Hodler becomes a forerunner of
modern painting. The exhibition, comprising some 80
works, has been organized in conjunction with the Neue
Galerie in New York and includes loans from renowned
Swiss and American private collections and national and
international museums. The exhibition is curated by Ulf
Küster (Fondation Beyeler) and Jill Lloyd (Neue Galerie).

Die Fondation Beyeler zeigt die grosszügige Schenkung
der Kunstsammler Claude und Micheline Renard, zu
der Werke von Jean Dubuffet, Sam Francis, Sigmar
Polke und Jean-Michel Basquiat gehören.

La production de Max Ernst (1891–1976) fait partie
des plus diversifiées de l’art moderne. Après s’être
rapproché du dadaïsme à Cologne, il s’affirma
rapidement comme un des pionniers du surréalisme
à Paris. Ne se lassant pas d’inventer de nouvelles
figures, formes et techniques, Max Ernst n’a jamais
cessé d’explorer de nouvelles directions. Il a ainsi
donné naissance à une œuvre unique, qui se dérobe
à toute définition stylistique évidente et dont l’évolution
est également marquée par la vie mouvementée de
l’artiste et par ses lieux de résidence changeants en
Europe et en Amérique.
Max Ernst (1891–1976) is one of modernism’s most
versatile artists. Having started out as a Dadaist in
Cologne, he soon became a pioneer of Surrealism
in Paris. A tireless creator of new figures, forms
and techniques, Max Ernst kept on evolving in new
directions even up to his late years. His remarkable
oeuvre, which defies any clear stylistic definition, was
also shaped by his eventful life and the many different
places in which he lived in Europe and America.

Max Ernst (1891–1976) gehört zu den vielseitig­
sten
Künstlern der Moderne. Nach seinen Anfängen als
Dadaist in Köln wurde er bald zu einem der Pioniere
des Surrealismus in Paris. Als fortwährender Erfinder
neuer Figuren, Formen und Techniken hat sich Max
Ernst auch später ständig weiterorientiert. Dabei
hat er ein einzigartiges Werk geschaffen, das sich
jeder klaren stilistischen Definition entzieht und
dessen Entwicklung vom bewegten Leben und den
wechselnden Aufenthaltsorten des Künstlers in Europa
und Amerika mitgeprägt ist.
Die grosse Retrospektive in der Fondation Beyeler
präsentiert eine exemplarische Auswahl von über 170
Gemälden, Zeichnungen, Collagen, Skulpturen und
Büchern von Max Ernst, die alle Aspekte seines Werks
umfasst. So erhält der Besucher zum ersten Mal in
der Schweiz die Gelegenheit, das mannigfaltige Œuvre
dieses Jahrhundertkünstlers in seinem gesamten
Reichtum zu erleben.

illustrées qui regroupe tous les aspects de la création
de Max Ernst, offrant aux spectateurs la première
occasion de découvrir en Suisse l’œuvre polymorphe
de cet artiste dans toute sa richesse.
The major retrospective at the Fondation Beyeler will
present an exemplary selection of over 170 paintings,
drawings, collages, sculptures and books by Max Ernst
that encompass all aspects of his work. For the first
time in Switzerland, visitors will be able to experience
the full richness of Max Ernst’s multifaceted oeuvre.

Maurizio Cattelan

Seit den 1990er-Jahren erstaunt Maurizio Cattelan (geb.
1960 in Padua, Italien) mit seinen Skulpturen. Nach
der Ankündigung seines Rückzugs aus der Kunstwelt
wird sein Projekt in der Fondation Beyeler mit grosser
Spannung erwartet.
Depuis les années 1990, les sculptures de Maurizio
Cattelan (né en 1960 à Padoue en Italie) créent la
surprise. Après l’annonce par l’artiste de son retrait
du monde artistique, son projet est attendu avec
impatience à la Fondation Beyeler.
Maurizio Cattelan (b. 1960 in Padua, Italy) has been
delivering surprises with his sculptures since the
1990s. Following the announcement of his retirement
from the art world, his project for the Fondation Beyeler
is awaited with great anticipation.

Der deutsche Künstler Thomas Schütte (geb. 1954)
wurde während langer Zeit vor allem über seine
architektonisch anmutenden Modelle und Objekte
wahrgenommen. Allmählich erst wurde offenbar,
dass parallel dazu ein ebenso reiches Schaffen von
Skulpturen und Zeichnungen entstanden ist, in deren
Zentrum die menschliche Figur steht. Diesem Teil des
Schaffens widmet sich die Ausstellung in der Fondation
Beyeler und sie zeigt Thomas Schütte als einen der
ungewöhnlichsten und faszinierendsten Künstler seiner
Generation. Schütte nimmt die Tradition der figurativen
Skulptur auf und entwickelt daraus Figuren und Köpfe,
die in ihrer unmittelbaren Ausstrahlung ebenso wie in
ihrer Herstellung unwiderruflich im Heute stehen. Ob
handgrosse Keramikskulptur oder vier Meter hohe
Eisenplastik – die Figuren und Köpfe von Thomas
Schütte sind auf merkwürdige Weise gleichzeitig fremd
und vertraut und berühren als Gegenüber.
Pendant longtemps, l’artiste allemand Thomas Schütte
(né en 1954) a surtout été connu pour ses maquettes
et ses objets d’esprit architectural. Ce n’est que peu
à peu qu’on a pris conscience qu’il avait produit en
parallèle une œuvre tout aussi riche de sculptures et
de dessins, centrée autour de la figure humaine. C’est à
cette partie de sa création que se consacre l’exposition
de la Fondation Beyeler, qui révèle en Thomas Schütte
un des artistes les plus originaux et les plus fascinants
de sa génération. Schütte renoue avec la tradition de
la sculpture figurative et élabore à partir de celle-ci des
figures et des têtes que leur rayonnement immédiat
et leur fabrication inscrivent irrévocablement dans
le temps présent. Qu’il s’agisse d’une sculpture de
céramique grande comme la main ou d’une création
en fer de quatre mètres de haut, les figures de Thomas
Schütte sont, mystérieusement, tout à la fois étrangères
et familières et leur rencontre est toujours émouvante.
German artist Thomas Schütte (b. 1954) was for a long
time known primarily for his architecturally themed
models and objects. Only more recently has attention
focused upon Schütte’s parallel and equally rich body
of work in sculpture and drawing, which is centered
upon the human figure. This facet of his oeuvre forms
the starting point of the exhibition at the Fondation
Beyeler, which shows Thomas Schütte as one of the
most unusual and fascinating artists of his generation.
Taking up the tradition of figurative sculpture, Schütte
creates figures and heads that assert their irrevocable
place in the present, both in their immediacy and their
manufacture. Whether ceramics the size of a hand or
steel sculptures four meters high, the figures and heads
by Thomas Schütte are in a strange way at once foreign
and familiar, and engage us at a directly personal level.

Calder Gallery
2012 – 2014
In Zusammenarbeit mit der Calder Foundation und
mit der Unterstützung der L. + Th. La Roche-Stiftung,
zeigt die Fondation Beyeler jährlich wechselnde
Präsentationen mit Werken des amerikanischen
Künstlers Alexander Calder (1898–1976). Die nächste
Calder Gallery widmet sich dem Thema Baum.
En collaboration avec la Calder Foundation et avec le
soutien de la L. + Th. La Roche-Stiftung, la Fondation
Beyeler propose des présentations d’œuvres de l’artiste
américain Alexander Calder (1898–1976) qui changent
chaque année. La prochaine Calder Gallery est consacrée au thème de l’arbre.
The Calder Gallery at the Fondation Beyeler presents
works by the American artist Alexander Calder (1898–
1976). Inaugurated in 2012 in association with the Calder
Foundation and with the support of the L. + Th. La RocheStiftung, the curated exhibition changes every year. The
next Calder Gallery is devoted to the theme of the tree.
