2009: 90th anniversary of Zapata!s death 2010: Bicentennial of Mexico!s independence 2010: Centennial of the Mexican revolution T he revolutionary Emiliano Zapata died at the age of 39, on April 10, 1919, following an ambush set up in the Chinamera hacienda by government troops. By shooting him twice at point blank range, the military didn!t give him a chance to survive. The body was then exposed in the town hall of Cuautla where the police forced the villagers to recognize the corpse and threatened to put them in prison if they refused. Yet, the Zapatista peasants will deny the evidence of his death, maintaining it wasn!t Emiliano Zapata who was killed, but one of his lieutenants. A myth was born. His horse, As de Oros, ran away during the shoot-out. Just like its rider, it became a legend, the symbol of peasant pride against the powerful landowners. Since that time, the children and peasants maintain that the horse still runs in the hills of the State of Morelos, at night, in April. Zapata is dead, but his memory remains intact among all Mexicans. And this myth is upheld by the bourgeoisie as well as the extreme-left of subcommander Marcos. On the celebration day of Epiphany, the Charros horsemen, with their large sombreros, sport medals of the Virgin and gather in long columns on Mount Cubile, as they used to during the revolution. W ith the exclusive account of Zapata!s daughter, Anna Maria, age 95, and of his grandchildren, this documentary recalls the major moments of this epic. It also puts into perspective the « appropriation » of the Zapata icon, the betrayed revolutionary to whom we attribute a practically immortal dimension. Today still, this Mexican of Indian origin may serve as a bond for a divided and violent society...
