A thrilling finish won by General

GENERAL-PESLIER: THE SECRET WEAPON OF ALBAN DE MIEULLE
A duel of two exceptional horses was forecast and
duely delivered. Mirroring the finish of the Qatar
Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the unbeaten Jalnar Al
Khalidiah KSA (Tiwaiq) and titleholder General
GB (Amer) were locked in a fascinating battle right
to the winning post. The tension was mounting in
the parade ring. D-day had arrived and each team
was giving orders and observing the runners. In
addition, two exceptional trainers were fighting for
the ultimate victory. Jean-François Bernard was
looking after the interests of the Al Khalediah stable
while Alban de Mieulle was looking after those of
the Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani stable.
Blinkered Nashwan Al Khalidiah KSA (Tiwaiq)
was the first to show his nose in front, followed on
his outside by Mu’Azzaz GB (Amer). The
favourites were patiently waiting in the middle of the field, including General who was shadowing his stable
companion Damis GB (Amer). Jalnar Al Khalidiah wasn’t far behind, travelling on the rail. Only Raqiyah GB
(Amer), the best four-year-old filly at the moment and other runner for Alban de Mieulle was galloping in the rear. A
strong pace was set, allowing the runners to spread out in the final straight. Mu’Azzaz was the first to launch the
sprint, but was quickly overtaken by Jalnar Al Khalidiah. The favourite announced his presence, travelling easily. He
took the lead to the shouts of the spectators who expected a similar performance to the one he delivered in his prep
race, the group 2 PA Prix Dragon. However, Olivier Peslier chose that moment to launch General in the middle of
the track. The battle to the finish line was hence under the way. General started to edge forward, accompanied by the
voices of his Qatari entourage, while Alban de Mieulle was impatiently tapping the ground with his foot. No one
doubted that the beautiful grey horse was going to record a famous double, but Jalnar Al Khalidiah was not ready to
give up yet and accelerated once more on the rail. He gained ground and as if he understood that the grass
championship was in his reach, he fought on valiantly. But Olivier Peslier showed once more, as if he had to, that he
is a real champion in the saddle. Together they went past the winning post, offering Alban de Mieulle a fantastic
double. Raqiyah came from behind to take third place, while Jaafer ASF GB (Amer) finished fourth.
The winning trainer Alban de Mieulle was delighted and
also relieved when he said: “We are really happy. We had a
great weekend, as Rasheeqah, the filly who won yesterday
was a nice surprise. That is why today I was relatively
optimistic as Olivier had ridden General last Tuesday for his
final piece of work. Rasheeqah and Raqiyah finished
together behind General, who left them far behind. This gave
us a pretty good idea and also the time of the prep race (Prix
Dragon) this year, where Jalnar Al Khalidia beat Raqiyah,
was seven seconds faster than the one of last year. So we
were hopeful. Olivier rode him masterfully. He left him
alone, waited and came at the right moment, if not maybe a
little bit early. Yes, the other one came to battle with General
but he actually wasn’t a 100% ready yet. I hope that we can
come back next year. That will be his main target: a hat-trick.”
Jean-François Bernard was naturally disappointed. He said: “When Jalnar Al Kahlidiah took the lead, he thought
his work was done. He idled a bit, which allowed General to come and attack him. He tried to get his head back in
front but it was too late. This was the first time that he had to fight. He understood quickly what was expected of him,
but General’s experience and the talent of Olivier Peslier finished him.”
So, next round, next year! We can’t wait to see them again.

GENERAL-PESLIER : L’ARME FATALE D’ALBAN DE MIEULLE
On avait prédit un match de titans entre deux
chevaux d’exception. Le combat a bien eu lieu et, à
l’instar du Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, la ligne
droite a été de toute beauté entre l’invaincu Jalnar
Al Khalidiah KSA (Tiwaiq) et le tenant du titre,
General GB (Amer). La tension était palpable dans
le rond de présentation. Le jour J était arrivé et
chaque camp donnait ses consignes, observait avec
attention les chevaux. En toile de fond, un duel de
deux entraîneurs d’exception, Jean-François Bernard
pour les Al Khalediah Stables et Alban de Mieulle
pour celle de Cheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani.
La course était rapidement prise à son compte par
Nashwan Al Khalidiah ksA (Tiwaiq), muni
d’œillères et suivi sur son extérieur par Mu’Azzaz
GB (Amer). Les favoris étaient tranquillement
installés au sein du peloton, General dans le sillage de son compagnon de casaque, Damis GB (Amer). Jalnar Al
Khalidiah n’était pas loin, plutôt côté corde. Seule Raqiyah GB (Amer), la meilleure 4ans actuelle et autre atout
d’Alban de Mieulle, patientait à l’arrière-garde. Le rythme était soutenu et les concurrents avaient tout loisir de
s’exprimer dans la ligne droite. C’est Mu’Azzaz qui lançait le premier les hostilités mais, rapidement, Jalnar Al
Khalidiah allait surgir. Le favori répondait présent, semblant
galoper librement. Il prenait l’avantage, la foule bruissait,
attendant la démonstration comme ce fut le cas dans la
préparatoire du Prix Dragon (Gr2 PA). C’est alors que
General pointait les naseaux, lancé en pleine piste par
Olivier Peslier. La lutte pouvait commencer, cela sentait
l’explication. Et puis General prenait un facile ascendant, le
clan qatari encourageait de la voix son champion, Alban de
Mieulle tapant du pied avec force. Nul doute que le beau
gris filait vers le doublé mais c’est alors que Jalnar Al
Khalidiah, dans un ultime sursaut d’orgueil, remettait un
coup de reins le long de la corde. Il grignotait du terrain,
comprenant peut-être que pour devenir un champion sur le
turf, il fallait montrer des qualités de combattant. Mais
Olivier Peslier justifiait une nouvelle fois, s’il le fallait encore, son statut de crack jockey, se montrant intraitable à la
lutte. General, au balancier, l’emportait en champion et s’offrait un magnifique doublé. Raqiyah venait de
l’arrièregarde prendre la troisième place devant Jaafer Asf Gb (Amer), valeureux quatrième.
Alban de Mieulle, l’entraîneur du lauréat, était à la fois ravi et soulagé : « On est vraiment content. On a réussi un
grand week-end, la pouliche qui s’est imposée hier, Rasheeqah, nous a surpris agréablement. C’est pourquoi
aujourd’hui, j’étais relativement confiant car Olivier était venu monter General mardi dernier pour un travail sur le
gazon. Rasheeqah et Raqiyah ont fini ensemble et General les a pulvérisés. Cela nous donnait une bonne "ligne" et
puis le temps de la préparatoire [le Prix Dragon, ndlr] de cette année, où Jalnar Al Khalediah a devancé facilement
Raqiyah, était supérieure de 7 secondes à celui de l’année dernière. On avait donc une petite espérance. Olivier l’a
remarquablement monté, il l’a laissé, a attendu et est venu attaquer au bon moment, peut-être même un peu tôt.
Certes, l’autre est revenu attaquer General mais ce dernier n’était pas encore à 100%. J’espère que vous le verrez à
nouveau l’année prochaine, c’est désormais l’objectif . Le triplé ! »
Pour Jean-François Bernard, la déception était logiquement de mise : « Quand Jalnar Al Khalidiah a pris
l’avantage, il a cru que son boulot était fini, il s’est relâché, ce qui a permis à General de venir, lancé. Il a tenté de
reprendre l’avantage mais c’était trop tard. C’était la première fois qu’il luttait. Il a compris très vite mais le métier
de General et la belle monte d’Olivier ont fait le reste. » Prochain round l’année prochaine sûrement. On a hâte d’y
être !
