BIOGRAPHIE
Marion Wagschal (Port-d’Espagne, Trinité-et-Tobago) est une peintre au goût marqué pour une figuration empathique, parfois jusqu’à
outrance. Tout au long d’une carrière remarquable, elle affine un type de réalisme qui offre une perspective renouvelée des
mythologies et des allégories. Son œuvre puise à diverses sources, du Moyen Âge à l’époque contemporaine, avec un penchant
marqué pour les peintres romantiques du XIXe siècle. Actualisant leur tradition picturale, elle juxtapose, « à n'importe quels genres ou
styles historiques, quelque chose qui n'y appartient pas - un irritant ». Cet irritant prend souvent la forme d'un commentaire féministe,
et questionne sa place comme peintre dans une histoire de l’art à prédominance masculine. Au sein du Département de peinture et
dessin de la Faculté des beaux-arts de l’Université Concordia, où elle enseigne pendant 37 ans, elle développe un séminaire/atelier
novateur intitulé Women and Painting. Membre de l’Académie royale des arts du Canada, ses œuvres font partie de nombreuses
collections privées et publiques, telles que le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (Montréal, Québec), le Musée des beaux-arts de
Montréal (Montréal, Québec), Hydro-Québec (Montréal, Québec), le Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (Québec, Québec), le
Confederation Centre for the Arts (Charlottetown, Île-du-Prince-Édouard), la Robert McLaughlin Gallery (Oshawa, Ontario) et le
Plattsburgh State Art Museum (Plattsburgh, New York). Parmi ses expositions marquantes, notons Femmes artistes du XXe siècle au
Québec au Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec et Art et Féminisme au Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. En 2014 et
2015, son travail faisait l'objet d'une exposition rétrospective présentée au Musée des beaux-arts de la Nouvelle-Écosse (Halifax,
Nouvelle-Écosse) et au Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal. Une exposition lui était dédiée à la Galerie de la Maison du Canada, Hautcommissariat du Canada au Royaume-Uni (Londres, Royaume-Uni) en 2016. Marion Wagschal vit et travaille à Montréal.

BIOGRAPHY
Marion Wagschal (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) is a painter with a pronounced inclination towards empathetic figuration, albeit at
times extreme. Throughout her remarkable career, she has refined a kind of realism that offers a new perspective on mythologies and
allegories. Her work draws from diverse sources, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era, with a marked penchant for the
Romantic painters of the nineteenth century. Actualising their pictorial tradition, she embeds “in any genre or historical style, something
that doesn’t belong—some irritation". This irritation often takes the form of feminist commentary, and questions her own place as a
painter in a predominantly masculine art history. As part of the Painting and Drawing Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at
Concordia University, where she held a position for 37 years, she developed an innovative seminar/workshop entitled Women and
Painting. A member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, her work can be found in private and public collections, such as the
Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (Montreal, Quebec), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Montreal, Quebec), Hydro-Québec
(Montreal, Quebec), Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (Quebec City, Quebec), Confederation Centre for the Arts
(Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island), Robert McLaughlin Gallery (Oshawa, Ontario) and Plattsburgh State Art Museum (Plattsburgh,
New York). Notable exhibitions include Femmes artistes du XXe siècle au Québec at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec
and Art et Féminisme at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. In 2014 and 2015, her work was the subject of a retrospective
exhibition presented at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. I was also presented at the Gallery at
Canada House, the High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom (London), in 2016. Marion Wagschal lives and works in
Montreal.
