The theory of predictive coding has been formulated mathematically and is thought to apply to sensory, motor and cognitive domains. The course proposes to provide an introduction to this new domain of research via talks provided by international leaders in the field. The subject matter will be accessible to all students in neuroscience. Attention will be made to make the course fully accessible to students with only a bacalaureat level of maths. The hypothesis of the predictive brain has gained increasing attention in the last few years in cognitive neurosciences (Clark, 2013). Important achievements in computational (Bayesian) methods to effectively process uncertainty and the recognition that the brain must resolve sensory ambiguity to generate perception and guide actions (Knill and Pouget, 2004) have been at the core of the predictive brain approach. According to this approach, bottom-up prediction errors and top-down expectations play a crucial role in explaining cortical organization (Markov and Kennedy, 2013) and function from cognition (Penny, 2012) to pathological behaviour (Friston, Stephan, Montague and Dolan, 2014). In the current Neuroconférence topic, we will introduce some of the basic concepts underlying this important field of research and illustrate some of the main findings supporting its assumptions in neurosciences. -Clark, A.
