Le travail de Paul de Guzman habite un espace éphémère.
«L’artiste s’insère dans les oeuvres canoniques du design et de la critique contemporaine
en découpant des parties d’ouvrages sur l’architecture et des anthologies qui sont devenues des références en matière d’interprétation et de signification.»¹.
Ces découpages ou incisions dévoilent l’architecture invisible des livres qu’il a taillé et
nous rappellent que le langage se base sur une structure ordonnée. Ses enquêtes sur l’art,
le langage, l’architecture et le design tentent d’interrompre notre compréhension traditionnelle de ces disciplines, tout en révélant les aspects de ces disciplines qui ne sont pas
toujours visuellement apparents. Ses oeuvres les plus récentes examinent l’architecture et
la permanence du langage.
Paul de Guzman est né en 1965 à Manille, aux Philippines où il étudia l’Ingénierie.
Il émigre au Canada en 1986 et vit et travaille actuellement à Vancouver, Canada. Ses
expositions récentes ont eu lieu à Apexart (New York, USA), Transit - aktuele kunst (Belgique), Art Gallery of Bishop’s University (Halifax, Canada), Art Gallery de Ontario (Toronto, Canada), à la Robert Birch Gallery (Toronto, Canada) et à l’Art Forum Berlin, Galerie
Markus Richter, Berlin.

Paul de Guzman’s work inhabits a transient space. “The artist inserts himself into the canonical works
of contemporary design and criticism by cutting sections from architecture books and anthologies
which have become authorities on meaning and interpretation”1. These cut-outs or incisions reveal
the invisible internal architecture of every book he has ever cut and reminds us that language
relies on orderly structure. His investigations into art, language, architecture and design try to
interrupt our basic and traditional understanding of these particular genres by revealing aspects of
each genre that may not be visually or relatively apparent. His most recent work investigates the
portability of architecture and the permanence of language.
Paul de Guzman (b.1965) was born in Manila, The Philippines where he studied Engineering.
He immigrated to Canada in 1986 and currently lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. Some
recent exhibitions include shows at apexart (New York, USA), Transit – aktuele kunst (Belgium), Art
Gallery of Bishop’s University (Halifax, Canada), Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto, Canada) and
Robert Birch Gallery (Toronto, Canada).
