Context
The next French presidential election will be held in May
2017. The next spring is thus a great timing to explore the
transformations of politics in the French society and
especially in working-class neighbourhoods, which are a
major challenge in France as well as, more generally, in
Western societies. These neighbourhoods result from the
reproduction of unequal socio-spatial orders according to
spatialbutalsoclass,ethnicityandgenderlines.
Theaimofthisresearchprojectistoanalysehowtheyouth
of a working class neighbourhood “thinks” and “speaks”
about politics and how these young inhabitants politicize
social issues. In that perspective, it deals with
contemporary scientific discussions in political science and
urbansociology about the politicaltransformations in poor
neighbourhoods and the said “crisis of the representative
democracy”. For some researchers, there is a
“depoliticization”oftheyouthintheseneighbourhoods.For
some others, there is still a strong politicization but also a
very strong rejection of the political elites, considered as
lackingrepresentativenessandlegitimacy.

Bibliography
The objective is to analyse the transformations of politics
and relationships between the political elites and
institutions and the governed, especially the youth of
working class neighbourhoods, today under-represented
bythesepoliticalelites.
The research will rely on fieldwork in a working class
neighbourhood (Montreynaud) in the city of Saint-Etienne.
The fieldwork will mainly consist of semi-directive
interviewswithinhabitantsoftheneighbourhood.
The student will be very much involved in the scientific
teamworkingonissuesoflocal/urbanpoliciesandpolitical
transformationsinSaint-Etienne.
