Nantes is packed with plenty things to visit. Let you get into a walking tour with our expert guide and learn
more about the history of Nantes from the Middle Ages to the 19th Century. This stroll will take you through
the medieval district known as “Quartier Bouffay” with its two impressive buildings; the Castle of the Dukes
of Brittany and the Cathedral St Peter and St Paul. You will also see the Isle of Feydeau, known for its 18th
Century architecture and the quays. A short stroll away, you will encounter the magnificent “Passage
Pommeraye”, which is a commercial centre of the 19th century and the Nantes Opera.
Departure of the visit: Stolling Nantes
Visit of the Cathedral St Peter and St Paul
Impressive and Masterpiece of the late gothic architecture, the cathedral shelters the tomb of
François II and Marguerite de Foix, parents of Anne of Brittany.
Visit of the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany (the yard only)
It is one of the most outstanding buildings in the Britanny. The construction started under François
2nd, the last duke of Brittany, and then completed by his daughter, Anne of Brittany, twice queen of
France. The castle houses a royal palace of elegant renaissance facades and ornate outward facing
galleries or loggia.
Bouffay Neighborood
Discover the charming medieval district through its streets and monuments. Now mostly
pedestrianised, it still feels like the soul of the town. The names of the narrow lanes and streets
bring back the time when the whole town was here.
Nantes in the 18th Century
"Nantes in the time of the islands" is what Feydeau Island proposes to those who take the time to
stroll in its streets. The isle evokes the extravagant way of life of the maritime traders led in the
18th century, when the port of Nantes was the biggest in France and one of the most important in
Europe.
Nantes 19th Century
The town’s industrial success shaped the whole elegant area of the town. Despite being heavily
bombed during the last world war, the quarter has managed to remain one of the finest examples
of 18th – 19th century town planning. Named after its promoter, Mr Graslin, it was designed by the
architects Ceineray and Crucy.
