Verbes transitifs donc suivis d’un GN ou d’un verbe à la forme –ing
Ex : Avoid, bear, consider, detest, dislike, endure, enjoy, imagine, involve, mention, mind, miss,
practise, resent, risk, postpone, stand, give up, put off
Remarque :
On insère un ‘sujet’ devant la forme en –ing si besoin (si différent du sujet du verbe principal)
Ex : Do you mind me smoking ? (informal)
No one minded the ambassador’s requesting a state reception. (formal)
Après une préposition, toujours un GN ou une forme -ing
look forward to / put up with / be interested in / object to / approve/disapprove of
Verbes acceptant la construction infinitive et la construction avec –ing
Dans de rares cas : pas de différence de sens
Ex : It began / started raining / to rain just as we were leaving.
Dans les autres cas, en général l’infinitif exprime l’hypothétique ou le non encore accompli, la
forme –ing exprime l’accompli.
LOVE - LIKE - HATE
Après ‘d, toujours l’infinitif. (ex : I’d like to leave, I’d hate to be late)
Sinon… tout est permis.
I like dancing.
I like to move it, move it.
I hate to tell you that, but you look exhausted.
I hate waking up early.
I love to find myself completely alone in a cathedral.
I love being alone.

-ing lorsqu’ils sont employés seuls à l’actif
mais infinitif avec un objet, ainsi qu’à la forme passive.
Ex : They don’t allow eating on the premises.
Mais : We weren’t allowed to eat on the premises.
Ou
They don’t allow anyone to eat on the premises.
TRY
Suivi de l’infinitif pour décrire un effort, une difficulté.
Ex : They tried to persuade their daughter not to smoke.
Suivi d’une forme –ing pour faire une suggestion.
Ex : Try drinking camomile tea just before you go to bed.
STOP – REMEMBER – FORGET – REGRET – GO ON
Suivis de l’infinitif pour regarder vers l’avenir, suivis de –ing pour regarder vers le passé.
Constructions contre-intuitives par rapport au français :
Approve = I disapprove of your behaviour.
Obey = I expect to be obeyed !
Object = He objected to her leaving the castle.
Confess / admit = The lady admitted to cheating on her husband
Enter = When the general entered the room, a lady swooned.
Ask / pay (for ?) = ask the way / the time / a question. Ask for something, the bill, advice.
Pay a salary, a fee, an employee. Pay for something (the meal, etc.)
