Kelvis Ochoa est un musicien cubain: musicien, poète, cuisinier, rêveur… Le Cubain
Kelvis Ochoa vit sa musique. Rencontre avec des lieux et des personnalités qui ont
marqué sa vie, son œuvre, sa génération – et la culture cubaine.
«Mon film est une déclaration d’amour à Cuba». C’est en ces
termes que le réalisateur biennois Beat Borter résume son
documentaire sur Kelvis Ochoa, musicien très populaire de
Cuba et l'un des deux compositeurs de la B.O. du film
Habana Blues. A voir à Carouge jusqu’au 28 novembre dans
le cadre du festival Filmar en America latina, Yo sé de un
lugar (littéralement «Je sais quelque chose au sujet d’un
certain lieu») retrace le parcours du compositeur interprète
de 44 ans, qui s’illustre à La Havane par ses rythmes
cubains – Sucu-sucu, Cha Cha Cha, Macuta, Songo – mixés
au funk, rock ou au pop.
Qu’est-ce qui a amené le réalisateur suisse alémanique sur
les traces du chanteur? «Je suis un Suisse cubanisé: ça fait
25 ans que je m’y rends. Ma femme est cubaine et a grandi
sur L’île de la jeunesse avec Kelvis.» Ce qui plaît à Beat
Borter, chez Kelvis Ochoa, outre «sa très belle voix», c’est sa
capacité à émouvoir le public: «Je me souviens d’un concert
à La Havane où se succédaient plusieurs musiciens
excellents. Kelvis est le seul qui m’ait donné des frissons.»
Plusieurs personnalités cubaines s’expriment dans Yo sé de
un lugar, à l’instar du guitariste chanteur Pablo Milanés, du
pianiste de jazz Ernán López-Nussa, du peintre Kcho ou
encore de Frank Fernández Tamayo, qui a tenu à
accompagner Kelvis Ochoa au piano sur des Lonjina (airs
traditionnels romantiques). «Ils m’ont tous dit être heureux
que quelqu’un fasse enfin un film sur Kelvis».
Mais le plus beau compliment fait à Beat Borter est venu
d’un vieil homme lors d’une projection à La Havane: «Il m’a
dit que le film parvenait à restituer la «Cubanía», soit le fait
d’être cubain.»

Réalisateur
Né en 1949 à Huttwil, en Suisse, Beat Borter est journaliste, enseignant et
réalisateur de films. Il est en outre co-fondateur du Filmpodium à Bienne,
ville où il réside actuellement. Sa filmographie comporte notamment les
documentaires La vida es filmar (1998) et L’art de l’imagination exacte
(2006). Son dernier long-métrage, Yo sé de un lugar (2013), raconte la vie

Kelvis Ochoa
Kelvis Ochoa (born in 1970 in Las Tunas, Cuba) is an author-composer-
singer.
At the age of 3 his parents moved to Isla de la Juventud ("Isle of Youth")
where he grew up, situated about 100 kilometers south of the Havana,
Cuba shore.
He is very popular with young Cubans and famous worldwide for having
co-composed the original soundtrack from the movie Habana Blues. He
is also part of the Cuban band Habana Abierta.
Kelvis Ochoa was meant to be a musician: his father was a percussionist
in his grandfather’s band. Hearing them playing gave him the passion for
music. Kelvis Ochoa started playing conga tunes in the streets with his
friends. His first stage performance occurred when he was 14, when he
sang at an inter-school festival a tune by the Cuban sucu-sucu player
Mongo Rives. Then he started to take guitar lessons, to write poetry and
songs, avoiding any form of classical music training. Very early, some
press agents gave him the nickname of "the Idol of Youth from the Isle of
Youth".
The genesis of a style[edit]
The place where he spent his youth fundamentally influenced his current
music. La Isla de la Juventud is the cradle of the musical style known as
sucu-sucu, where a soloist improvises, in response to a chorus that
repeats a fixed part, accompanied by the instruments. This very
traditional Cuban music became the trademark of Kelvis Ochoa: he
mixes traditional Cuban rhythms (Sucu-sucu, Cha Cha Cha, Macuta,
Songo...) with modern music like funk, rock or international pop.
From anonymity to success[edit]
After having moved to Havana in 1992 and formed a rock band called
Cuatro Gatos (Four Cats), Kelvis Ochoa’s big break came when he met
the Cuban musician: Pável Urkiza. Urkiza, who was part of a well-known
Cuban duo "Gema y Pavel" was starting to make his name in the music
production field, and decided to produce Kelvis Ochoa on Habana
Oculta, a compilation of Cuban artists released in July 1996 on the
Madrid-based Nubenegra label. This record led to the formation of the
band that would call itself Habana Abierta. They rapidly met with
success, with the hit record Havana Abierta on the Spanish label BMG
Ariola, sold-out concerts in Spain in the 90s, a triumphant return to Cuba
in 2003 for a memorable show at La Tropical and a documentary film
directed by Jorge Perugorría and Arturo Soto.
Kelvis Ochoa also started a solo career with his album Kelvis (BMG
Ariola, 2001). He surrounded himself with Descemer Bueno, another
Cuban musician, who produced him and co-wrote the album Amor y
Música, released in 2009 on Cuba’s EGREM label.
Together, the two men won the 2006 Goya and the 2006 “Premio de la
Musica of the best movie soundtrack” for Havana Blues.
In 2013/14 Swiss film maker Beat Borter made a documentary: "Yo sé de
