Sous le soleil d'Afrique, un enfant marche avec les siens dans
le désert. La mort rôde, mais l'âme d'une mère ressuscitée par
la musique redonnera force et vie à l'enfant devenu un homme.
En combinant la technique de l'animation 2D sur tablette
graphique et la chaleur de l'animation de sable, le cinéaste
unit modernité et tradition, Brésil et Afrique, musique et
mémoire. Épuré dans sa forme et humaniste dans son propos,
ce film d'animation a l'élégance et la puissance d'évocation
d'une fable intemporelle.
THE FILM
The hungu is an African musical instrument, ancestor of the
Brazilian berimbau. Its origins are carried on in an ancient oral
tradition. Inspired by the grace and raw beauty of African rock
paintings, Nicolas Brault applies his narrative gifts to a world
where humans and nature are subtly linked.
Under the African sun, a child walks in the desert with his kin.
Death is prowling, but a mother's soul resurrected by music will
return strength and life to the child when he becomes a man.
The filmmaker combines 2D animation on a graphics tablet with
the warmth of sand animation, thus uniting modernity and
tradition, Brazil and Africa, music and memory. Sparse in
design and humanist in its outlook, Hungu exudes the elegance
and suggestive power of a timeless story.
À PROPOS DU RÉALISATEUR
Né en 1975, Nicolas Brault est diplômé
en design graphique de l'Université du
Québec à Montréal. Durant ses études, il
réalise deux courts métrages dessinés
directement sur tablette graphique : L'œil
et Vermino . Il remporte, en 2000, le
concours Cinéaste recherché(e) de l'ONF,
ce qui lui permet de réaliser Antagonia,
présenté au prestigieux Festival de Clermont-Ferrand et primé à
CINANIMA au Portugal. Après avoir exploré la culture inuite à
bord du voilier Sedna IV pendant la réalisation d'Îlot, il
s'intéresse, avec Hungu, à la tradition orale africaine. Nicolas
Brault est un cinéaste curieux, ouvert sur le monde et soucieux
de comprendre la diversité culturelle qui l'entoure.
ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Nicolas Brault was born in 1975. During his BA studies in
graphic design at Université du Québec à Montréal, he made two
short films drawn directly on a graphics tablet: L'œil and
Vermino. He won the NFB Cinéaste recherché(e) contest in
2000, allowing him to make Antagonia, which screened at the
prestigious Festival de Clermont-Ferrand and won an award at
Portugal's CINANIMA. During his expedition on Sedna IV he
explored Inuit culture while directing Îlot. Hungu explores the
African traditions that led to the creation of the berimbau, a
Brazilian musical instrument. Brault has an ethnologist's
fascination with the world and he tries to understand the cultural
diversity around him.

LE FILM
Ancêtre africain du berimbau brésilien, le hungu est un
instrument de musique dont les origines sont transmises par
une tradition orale ancestrale. Inspiré par la grâce et la beauté
brute des peintures rupestres africaines, Nicolas Brault met ses
dons de conteur au service d'un univers où l'humain et la
nature sont finement liés.
