Great hardware for small people!

At the confluence between the latest technologies and ancestral know-how, TIBOU
is the first collection of hardware for children developed by Vervloet.!
The primary function of handles and knobs is to open a door or drawer, but kids
often divert their uses by using them as coat racks. When hanging a jacket or a bag
on a door handle, the object loses its main function and it becomes difficult even
impossible to open the door.!
To account for this duality, all the elements of the TIBOU collection present a small
hook on their front face. It gives the child the opportunity of hanging up what he or
she wants without hampering the opening of the door or drawer.!
In this way, the object is both handy and educative.!

« When I met Isabelle Hamburger, CEO of Vervloet Corporate, she told me about
their desire to launch a range for children. The project directly attracted me because
I felt it would go beyond the styling. By analyzing the daily routines of a number of
children, I quickly identified several interesting tracks. The idea of merging a handle
and a coat stand clearly convinced all the people in charge of production, so I
designed the entire collection following this principle. » Quentin de Coster!

In 1905 Joseph Vervloet bought up a hardware factory in Brussels and started
specializing in the handmade manufacturing of decorative locks, door handles and
window latches and their accessories, with the intention of conquering the capital,
bathing in Art Nouveau and Art Deco currents. The quality of his products soon
opened him doors to royal palaces, the Residence Palace and Boerentoren in
Antwerp. !
With such references, the company gained a national fame that it plans to extend
beyond its boundaries. In the 70s, the international activity intensified. From 1977
onwards it successfully took part in exhibitions in Jeddah, Paris, Cologne and
Munich, set agents abroad and first won over Germany and the United States. !
International contracts multiply (Luxembourg, Switzerland, Japan, Turkey, Hong
Kong, Thailand and especially the Middle East ) to the point that 90% of its turnover
is made abroad today. In December 1992, the company won the « Oscar for
export ».!
Currently led by Isabelle Hamburger, great-granddaughter of the founder, the
company constantly operates new foreign markets. Its daily challenge is to enhance
a centennial craft and develop the business with new technologies.!

Rencontre entre une technologie de pointe et un savoir faire ancestral, TIBOU est la
première collection de quincaillerie pour enfants développée par Vervloet.!
Les béquilles, poignées et boutons ont pour première fonction d’ouvrir une porte ou un
tiroir, mais les enfants détournent souvent leur usage en s’en servant de porte-manteaux.
Lorsqu’on accroche une veste ou un sac à une poignée de porte, l’objet perd sa fonction
principale et il devient difficile voire impossible d’ouvrir la porte.!
Pour répondre à cette dualité, tous les éléments de la collection TIBOU présentent un petit
crochet sur leur face avant. Celui-ci offre à l’enfant la possibilité d’y suspendre ce qu’il veut
sans gêner l’ouverture de la porte ou du tiroir. !
De cette manière, l’objet est à la fois pratique et éducatif.!

« Lorsque j’ai rencontré Isabelle Hamburger, administratrice de l’entreprise Vervloet, elle
m’a parlé de leur volonté de lancer une gamme pour enfants. Le projet m’a directement
séduit car je sentais qu’il irait au delà du styling. En analysant le quotidien de quelques
enfants, j’ai rapidement dégagé plusieurs pistes intéressantes. L’idée de fusionner une
poignée et une patère, a clairement conquis les responsables de la production et j’ai donc
dessiné l’ensemble de la collection à partir de ce principe. » Quentin de Coster!

En 1905, Joseph Vervloet rachète une quincaillerie à Bruxelles et se spécialise dans la
fabrication artisanale de serrureries décoratives, poignées de portes, de fenêtres et leurs
accessoires, avec l’intention de conquérir la capitale, traversée par les courants de l’Art
nouveau et de l’Art déco. La qualité de ses articles lui ouvrira très vite les portes de palais
royaux, du Résidence Palace et du Boerentoren à Anvers. !
Avec de telles références, l’entreprise acquiert une renommée nationale qu’elle entend
alors porter au-delà de ses frontières. Dans les années 70, l’activité internationale
s’intensifie. A partir de 1977, elle s’exposera avec succès à Jeddah, Paris, Cologne et
Munich, aura des représentants à l’étranger et s’imposera d’abord en Allemagne et aux
Etats-Unis. Les contrats internationaux se multiplient (Luxembourg, Suisse, Japon,
Turquie, Hong Kong, Thaïlande et surtout Moyen-Orient) au point qu’aujourd’hui 90 % du
chiffre d’affaires est réalisé à l’exportation. En décembre 1992, l’entreprise a d’ailleurs
remporté l’ « Oscar à l’exportation ». !
Actuellement menée par Isabelle Hamburger, arrière-petite-fille du fondateur, la société
exploite sans cesse de nouveaux marchés étrangers. Son défi quotidien consiste à mettre
en valeur un artisanat centenaire et faire évoluer l’entreprise avec de nouvelles
technologies.!
