Tirée par la locomotive de
Brainport Eindhoven Region, cette province dépose en moyenne
4 brevets par jour, soit plus de la moitié du total national (52 %).
Cœur de l’industrie des hautes technologies depuis plus d’un
siècle, Brainport est, avec Amsterdam et Rotterdam, un des trois
piliers économiques du pays : la région représente plus du tiers
des investissements réalisés aux Pays-Bas en recherche et
développement (2,1 milliards d’euros). En termes d’emploi, plus
de 400 000 personnes travaillent dans ce secteur et d’importantes
multinationales sont implantées à Brainport Region Eindhoven :
ASML, DAF, FEI, OCÉ, Philips, TomTom… Grâce à Brainport,
le Noord-Brabant produit un quart des exportations du pays (soit
57 milliards d’euros). Cette réussite repose sur des investissements
à long terme de l’État et des collectivités locales dans l’économie
de l’intelligence. Pour preuve, Eindhoven est le siège du High Tech
Campus, du Holst Centre, de TNO et du Dutch Polymer Institute;
Helmond accueille le High Tech Automotive Campus et le
Food Technology Park Brainport ; Veldhoven abrite, pour sa part,
le Health Technology Park. Brainport compte 7 500 étudiants
en sciences et ingénierie, 14 000 chercheurs et 51 000 emplois
industriels. Brainport a cette année été récompensée de ses efforts
et désignée « Communauté intelligente de l’année 2011 » par
l’Intelligent Community Forum de New York. « Nous pouvons en
être fiers ! Cette récompense nous donne des arguments supplémentaires
pour mettre davantage en avant notre région sur la scène nationale et
internationale », affirme Rob van Gijzel, président de la Brainport
Foundation et maire d’Eindhoven. Brainport Eindhoven Region
ne devrait pas s’arrêter en si bon chemin : les objectifs fixés par
le plan « Brainport 2020, Top Economy, Smart Society » visent
à placer l’économie des Pays-Bas dans le top 5 mondial ! •

Here's the conundrum of the day: what common point is shared by the CD, the IRM
scanner, the new version of the TomTom GPS, the scanning electron microscope,
the artificial heart valve that grows with the human body, and the latest-generation
LED products? The answer: all these cutting-edge technologies were patented
in the Noord-Brabant Province in the Netherlands. Pulled along by the locomotive
of the Brainport Eindhoven Region, this province lodges an average of 4 patent
applications per day, in other words over half of the nation's total (52 %). As a core
of hi-tech industry for over a century, Brainport is, along with Amsterdam and Rotterdam, one of the country's three economic pillars: the region represents over onethird of R&D made in the Netherlands (2.1 billion euros). In terms of employment,
over 400,000 persons work in this sector and major multinationals are based in
Brainport Region Eindhoven: ASML, DAF, FEI, OCÉ, Philips, TomTom…
Thanks to Brainport, the Noord-Brabant produces one-quarter of the country's
exports (57 billion euros). This success is reliant on long-term investments made
by the State and local authorities in the intelligence economy. As proof of this, Eindhoven is the headquarters of the High Tech Campus, the Holst Centre, the TNO and
the Dutch Polymer Institute; Helmond is home to the High Tech Automotive Campus
and the Food Technology Park Brainport; meanwhile, Veldhoven hosts the Health
Technology Park. Brainport has 7,500 science and engineering students, 14,000 researchers and 51,000 industrial jobs. Brainport's efforts were recognised this year
when it was deemed the Intelligent Community of the Year 2011 by the Intelligent
Community Forum in New York. "We can be proud of this! This award gives us extra
arguments for further promoting our region on the national and international
stage," states Rob van Gijzel, President of the Brainport Foundation and Mayor of
Eindhoven. Brainport Eindhoven Region's onward march will surely continue: the
targets set by the "Brainport 2020, Top Economy, Smart Society" plan aim to hitch
the Netherland's economy up to the world's top five! •
