1944-1945, c’est la guerre. Il fait froid. Dans les villes, ne subsistent que
quelques navets et bulbes de tulipes pour toute nourriture. Aux Pays-Bas,
durant le long hiver de la faim, le troc demeure le seul moyen de survivre.
1944-1945. The last winter of the war in occupied Holland. There’s nothing to
eat in the cities but a few turnips or tulip bulbs. During the long, cold winter of
hunger, bartering is the only way to survive.
Se résignant au sacrifice, une mère et sa fillette, ainsi que deux femmes juives
qu’elles hébergent en toute clandestinité, entreprennent de récupérer la laine
d’un joli couvre-pied pour en faire des chaussettes. Sait-on jamais, un fermier
voudra peut-être échanger la chaleur des pieds contre quelques vivres.
Pendant 6 jours, elles tricoteront 55 chaussettes, dont une seule esseulée.
Chargée de son précieux butin à troquer, bravant la dureté des soldats nazis
et les risques de confiscation, la mère arpentera la campagne à bicyclette
dans l’espoir de nourrir la maisonnée.
Having no alternative, a mother and her young daughter, and the two Jewish
women they are secretly sheltering, decide to sacrifice a beautiful bedspread
and use the wool to make socks. You never know, a farmer might be willing to
trade a few morsels of food for warm feet. Over the next six days, they knit
27 pairs of socks, plus one odd one. Loaded with these precious goods, the
mother braves the brutality of the Nazi soldiers and the risk of confiscation,
bicycling around the countryside in the hopes of feeding those waiting at home.
Tiré d’un poème éponyme écrit par Maria Jacobs, 55 chaussettes est un film
d’animation de silhouettes signé Co Hoedeman, lauréat d’un Oscar®. Souvenir
d’une page sombre de l’histoire, qui fait écho à un souvenir d’enfance du
réalisateur, l’œuvre est touchante et simple. Pour Hoedeman, elle se veut un
hommage au courage et à l’ingéniosité de ses compatriotes néerlandais.
Based on Maria Jacobs’ poem of the same name, 55 Socks is a silhouette
animation film by Oscar®-winning director Co Hoedeman. It is a simple,
touching story, the memory of a dark page in history that echoes Hoedeman’s
own childhood memories. It is his tribute to the courage and ingenuity of his
Dutch compatriots.
Co Hoedeman, virtuose du cinéma d’animation, naît aux Pays-Bas en 1940.
À 25 ans, il émigre au Canada et se joint à l’Office national du film du Canada
(ONF). Hoedeman a réalisé jusqu’à ce jour plus de 21 films d’auteur et
collaboré à une vingtaine de productions. Acclamés partout au monde, ses
films ont remporté plus de 80 prix et mentions canadiens et mondiaux. À lui
seul, Le château de sable (1977) a reçu 24 prix dont l’Oscar® du meilleur film
d’animation en 1978. En 1997, il amorce une délicieuse série de quatre films
pour les tout-petits, mettant en vedette l’ourson Ludovic. Le célèbre Ludovic
sera également porté au petit écran dans Ludovic (2008), une série télévisée
produite par Cité-Amérique. Co Hoedeman crée ses univers avec divers
matériaux : marionnettes, grains de sable, papier, cubes de construction,
feuilles d’aluminium.
Co Hoedeman was born in the Netherlands in 1940
and, at age 25, immigrated to Canada, where he joined
the National Film Board. He has over 20 auteur
films to his credit to date and has collaborated on
another 20 productions. His internationally acclaimed
works have won more than 80 awards and honours in
Canada and around the world. The Sand Castle (1977)
alone received 24 awards, including an Oscar® for best
animated short in 1978. In 1997, he began a quartet
of children’s films featuring a lovable teddy bear who would go on to star in his
own TV series, Ludovic (2008), produced by Cité-Amérique. Hoedeman is a
wizard of animation who creates worlds out of materials such as sand, paper,
building blocks, aluminum foil and puppets.
