SYNOPSIS
SYNOPSIS
To Oedipus, women are an enigma. Why, with her bothersome
husband finally out of the way, did his mistress inexplicably run
off? Don’t lose your head, thinks Oedipus. Just try to understand.
And so the valiant young milkman embarks on an introspective
journey, a process of self-discovery and regression in which he
retraces the path of his life.
Pour le jeune laitier Œdipe, les femmes demeurent une
énigme... Pourquoi, alors qu’elle est enfin débarrassée de son
mari encombrant, sa maîtresse prend-elle la clé des champs
sans aucune explication? Rien ne sert de perdre la tête, se dit
le brave Oedipe. Il faut essayer de comprendre et pour cela, le
mieux est encore de se livrer à une intense introspection pour
refaire à rebours le chemin de sa vie...
Parodying the Greek myth, and throwing in a bunch of wellknown NFB animated characters for good measure, director Paul
Driessen offers up a backwards tragicomic version of the classic
tale. Oedipus is Driessen at his absurdist best.

personnages célèbres sortis des plus grands succès de l’ONF,
Paul Driessen renverse l’ordre des choses dans sa propre
version d’une histoire bien connue. Œdipe est une tragicomédie
absurde qui renoue avec la meilleure veine du cinéaste.
ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Né à Nimègue, aux Pays-Bas, en 1940, Paul
Driessen est l’une des figures majeures du
cinéma d’animation mondial. Après avoir
collaboré à Yellow Submarine (George Dunning,
1968), il entreprend une fructueuse carrière de
réalisateur de courts métrages, marquée par
des titres comme Air! (1972), Au bout du fil
(1974), David (1977), Par terre, par mer et par
air (1980), La fin du monde en quatre saisons
(1995), 3 Misses (1998), Le garçon qui a vu
l’iceberg (2000) et 2D or not 2D (2003). Ses
films ont récolté nombre de prix et d’honneurs
dans les festivals du monde entier. Son cinéma est caractérisé
par un travail singulier sur la ligne et par l’exploration de récits
aux structures novatrices.

Le cinéaste
Born in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 1940, Paul
Driessen is a leading figure in the international
animation scene. He got his start on George
Dunning’s landmark Yellow Submarine in 1968
and went on to a prolific career as a director of
animated shorts, with such titles as Air! (1972),
Cat’s Cradle (1974), David (1977), On Land,
at Sea and in the Air (1980), The End of the
World in Four Seasons (1995), 3 Misses (1998),
The Boy Who Saw the Iceberg (2000) and 2D or
Not 2D (2003). His films have been generously
awarded with prizes and honours from festivals
all over the world His films are characterized by his unique use
of line and his exploration of innovative narrative structures.
