Living in France: A Trip to the Bakers
A
Now I’m fine with some things. I can order baguettes and croissants
and loaves of bread. I can say ‘Je veux une baguette s’il vous plait.’
B
That means I want a baguette but it is more polite to say ‘Je voudrais
une baguette.’ I would like a baguette.
A
I see, but the person behind the counter sometimes puts in phrases
which I don’t understand.
B
They’re probably asking if you want anything else ‘et avec ceci’ or
c’est tout, is that everything? Or ‘desirez –vous autre chose’ Do you
want something else?
A
Yes that’s it. They have fantastic cakes in the local bakers. I know
that ‘gateau’ means cake and ‘tarte’ is a tart but I’m never quite
sure about the flavours... Frambroise?
B
Raspberry
A
Citron?
B
Lemon
A
Fraise?
B
Strawberry and pomme means ....
A
Apple, yes I know that one. Now one last thing. I noticed that they
don’t seem to have any sliced bread.
B
That’s true but they will slice it for you. So when you ask for you loaf
say the word ‘coupée’ which means you would like it to be sliced.
A
Right I’ll give it a go tomorrow.
